UK Petrol Price Breakdown

Pre-Tax Duty VAT

The increase in petrol prices in 2021 resulted in prices at the pump exceeding those seen in 2019 and earlier, even reaching levels not seen since 2014. This was largely due to higher pre-tax prices which increased by 38% from £0.37/l in 2020 to £0.52/l in 2021. As a result, the pump price increased from £1.14/l to £1.31 in 2021.

Pre-Tax Tax

With the high efficiency of the UK’s petroleum product distribution supply chain, the UK continues to have some of the lowest pre- tax petrol prices in Europe – only prices in Austria and France (€0.02/l lower), and Ireland (€0.01/l lower) averaging lower than the UK across the year. However, due to high taxes, UK petrol prices at the pump were near the European average (€1.53/l in the UK, €1.52/l in Europe).
