Veronica Blanco “To rate a business either one of two has to happen, the company you hired did a superb job or you got ripped off. Well, I’m sure glad to say that McAllen Valley Roofing did a GREAT job at my home. From the start, when Mr. Philip Westerman stopped by to give us a quote, we perceived the professionalism and the humanity in him and the company that he represents. Philip, was so helpful and patient with us, since our insurance company took some time to approve the damages. He made sure all our questions were answered and maintained communication with us through all the stages of the roof repair.”

Ralph Deanda “I have used McAllen Valley Roofing’s services once before and they did an excellent job. This second time around did not dissapoint. Philip helped me negotiate with my insurance company and fought to get me the money I needed to complete the project. It took nearly a year of back and forth with my insurance company but Philip did not give up and pushed to get me every dollar i was entitled to. The work was done quickly and efficiently. And if a mistake was made it was corrected immediately. I’m very pleased with the work and the service. I will definitely hire them again.”

Jeff Gover “I needed a roof replacement at my home due to a recent hail storm. McAllen Valley Roofing came to my rescue, They assisted me with dealing with my insurance company and understanding the process. The crew replaced my roof in a timely manner leaving everything clean when they left. All staff were very friendly and sympathetic to my needs, everyone from the sales staff, receptionist, and workers. I appreciate the great customer service.”

Choosing the Right Roofer Important things to consider before choosing the right contractor for your roofing job and how to protect your investment:

Search your local BBB to find local Accredited A rated roofers and read the reviews. Walk in to their local office and ask to be introduced to the staff responsible for making the roofing project go smoothly. Call the local roofing or building supply companies and ask for references and whom pays their bills on time. Ask for a list of references from the roofer, and get in the car to go take a look at their work. Search the company on google to read reviews to make sure others have had a good experience. Ask to see their quality control checklist for when the roof is complete to ensure they have standards for quality in place. Only hire a roofer that can offer you a manufacturer warranty. A manufacturer warranty is a third party warranty by the manufacturer that certified the roofing company. Only 1% of the roofers in the United States can offer this. Excellence is being able to do your best all the time, not just sometimes and being able to go home and say I did my best. I delivered the best possible roofing system to that customer.” - Alfredo Villalobos | Managing Partner “ Alfredo Villalobos

Frequently Asked Questions

“My roof is leaking—do I need to have the whole thing replaced?” It depends. If your roof is still in great condition and hasn’t a sustained significant damage then it is possible that some patching will be enough. If you have a flat roof then a roof restoration with an acrylic or silicone coating might be a better alternative than a complete roof replacement. However, the best way to know whether or not you need a roof replacement is through an in-depth roof assessment by one of our roof specialists. “Why do I need to hire you? Can’t I do this work myself?” While it might be tempting to think that roofing could fall under a DIY-home-improvement project, repairing and replacing modern roofing systems require specialized knowledge and tools that can not be learned in a short amount of time. Why you shouldn’t try the repairs yourself: • You may seriously damage your roof resulting in more problems or bodily harm. • You could void your manufacturer’s warranty due to improper installations/repairs. Most manufactuer’s won’t cover a roof that isn’t installed by a licensed contractor. “What is the best type of roof?” To answer to this question we would need to assess your roof ’s needs and what you value in your roof. If you’re looking for the most affordable option, roof shingles could be the optimal choice; if you’re looking for long- term value, aesthetics, and minimal maintenance, tile or metal might be the better choice. “What kind of warranties are available?” There are several types of warranties: contractor’s warranties that cover workmanship, manufacturer’s warranties that cover materials and extended manufacturer’s warranties that cover materials and labor. It is important that you clearly understand their respective terms and conditions. It is absolutely essential to obtain a workmanship warranty from your contractor. This is the warranty that ensures that your roof will perform satisfactorily. It is your insurance against leaks. “Howmuch will a new roof cost me?” A new roof consists of many different factors ranging from roof system, materials, color, style, texture, labor costs, and more, which weigh into the total calculation. In order to get an accurate estimate it is best to contact one of our project managers for a comprehensive roof report and list of recommended solutions.

Did you know?

You can deduct a commercial roofing project in your next tax filing! Under the updated Section 179 from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 , effective for tax years beginning January 1, 2018, businesses can immediately deduct up to $1 million for qualifying purchases of capital property, with a limit of $2.5 million. After 2018, the limits are indexed to inflation. Complete IRS Form 4562 to apply for a Section 179 deduction.

We Are Saving the One Roof at a Time. HowMcAllen Valley Roofing contributes to reducing the global carbon footprint.

28

Asphalt shingles being grinded at the IOC Processing Plant in Edinburg, TX

From Roofs to Roads: The Impact of Shingle Recycling. We recycle your roof shingles. Approximately 12,000,000 tons of asphalt shingles torn off from roofs end up in landfills every year in the United States. Traditional roof shin - gles are made up of fiberglass, asphalt, and granular minerals which make it the perfect additive for asphalt cement and conglomerate materials. For construction professionals, companies, and city planners, recycled shingles are a much more cost efficient and easier to obtain than traditional raw asphalt materials for paving. Each ton of recycled shingles that are incorporated in asphalt hot-mix saves about 2 barrels of petrolium. When it comes to purchasing materials contractors save on average 75-80% of the cost ($80/ton down to $20/ton) when using recycled as - phalt leading to saving the tax-payers money. Each ton of virgin asphalt alternatives that used recycled asphalt shingles prevent over 27 tons of CO2 emissions from contributing to global warming. Our objective is to be the leader in green roofing and do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint and most importantly keep all shingles off of landfills.

Did you know? • Shingles take approximately 300 years to break down and can not be composted. • The average roof removal generates 1-3 tons of asphalt shingle waste. • According to the EPA, recycled shingles improve durability and provide weather resistant properties to pavement resulting in fewer potholes.

29 White Roofs for a Greener Tomorrow. The cost effective cool roofing solutions.

Elastomeric roof coatings have been gaining popularity as a cool roof solution due to their efficient solar reflectance, high thermal emmitance, and low relative cost to install. Tradi- tional uncoated roofs attract and absorb the majority of the sun’s emmited UV rays creating an Urban Heat Island effect, a term describing built up areas that are hotter than nearby rural areas, resulting in higher energy bills.

Whether you’re homeowner or own a commercial/industrial building, restoring your cur- rent roof is the optimtal choice if you’re looking to significantly reduce your building’s total energy consumption costs. To learn more about the roofing solutions we can provide check out our project profiles on pages 17-23 and the product information on page 25.

With the advancement of technology and an evergrowing population, energy demand and consumption continues to rapidly grow; as a result, roughly 117 million metric tons of carbon dioxide are released into the air each year from air conditioners alone. As temperatures increase each year, central cooling will need more resources for the same output. California started to address this problem through their Title 24, Part 6 Building Energy Efficiency Standards requiring installation of “Cool Roofs”, a roof made up of materials that reflect the sun’s to mitigate the build - ing’s heat retention, on every residential and non-residential building in specific climate zones. Roofers nationwide have followed this trend through white roof system installations using TPO, PVC, and coatings such as acrylic or silicone. These solutions don’t require a property owner to replace their current roof- ing system, saving them up to 70% on labor and material costs.

The Path to a

Greener Roof

The roof is a huge part of any building project, and as the imperative for “greener” buildings grows, there is greater pressure to find an environmentally sustainable roof. But sustainability for membrane roofs had never previously been quantified. Duro-Last ® and NSF/ANSI 347

IN THE PAST

NSF/ANSI 347

The focus was on one or more of several individual attributes: • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released by the material or its installation • Energy savings of the roofing system • Recyclability of the raw material But there was no objective composite score.

New standard developed by major standards organizations (NSF, ANSI) with roofing industry stakeholders: • Architects • Roofing consultants • Engineers • Non-government organizations • Manufacturers

Based on total life cycle, NSF 347 quantifies and documents sustainable qualities of each membrane roofing material: • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) • Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) • Ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) • Ketone ethylene ester (KEE) • Polyisobutylene (PIB) products

Duro-Last did well in all three areas. But there was no way to compile “points” for a full, fair comparison to other products!

TOTAL LIFE CYCLE From raw material to disposal, NSF 347 rates each product in five different areas: Product design 42 points Product manufacturing 27 points Membrane durability 40 points Corporate governance 7 points Innovation 7 points Total 123 points

Product Manufacturing

During the manufacturing process, the maker practices:

• Conservation of energy • Conservation of water • Protection of clean air • Material waste reduction processes

Recycling Manufacturing Scrap Duro-Last recycles material in three ways: • Scrap is recycled back into production • Leftover material is reground to produce resilient commercial flooring • Pieces of off-spec membrane are used to make prefabricated roof accessories

Four levels of third-party verified certification: conformant (lowest), silver, gold, platinum (highest)

Corporate Governance

Is the manufacturer responsible to its stakeholders? • Training and outreach for installers and designers • A good corporate citizen • Good employer

Product Design

The membrane is made from environ- mentally sustainable raw material:

Duro-Last’s Community Commitment • Duro-Last community investment credit • Annual donation of roof to local church or school • Donated roof for new teaching hospital • Employees given opportunity to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity

• Minimal chemicals of concern • Informed selection of suppliers • Reclaims post-consumer single-ply roofing membrane

Membrane Durability

How long will it last? The roof’s service life is a key factor. It is measured by: • Quality control measures • Demonstrated durability in the field • How much the material itself contributes to durability

Innovation

For true sustainability, service life in the field is key. Two quality control measures must be in place: • Documented installer training program • Post-inspection protocol

• Increasing environmentally sustainable content

Has the company introduced new technology, or added sustainability value to old technology? Points awarded for:

• Reduction of energy consumption • Investment of capital in renewable energy at manufacturing plant • Reduced water consumption and minimization of waste materials

The membrane is “precision fabricated” to your building’s specifications in a controlled factory environment, including all accessories and edge details. Then the majority of your roofing system components are carefully assembled in our factory and shipped to your building site for final installation. Thickness over scrim isn’t the only quality that sets us apart from other roofing manufacturers. The Duro-Last Membrane* offers proven chemistry, four decades of proven in-the-field performance and top-notch support to back it all up.
