THE LESSONS WE LEARN FROM HISTORICAL FIGURES

CAN BE APPLIED IN OUR OWN LIVES

system. Hampton is one of the girls who attended Central High School and was a part of the Little Rock Nine. She was 1 of the 9 African American students attending this high school after Little Rock schools began the process of desegregation after Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954. I remember learning about this in school, and to this day, she has always been an inspiration to me. I can’t even begin to imagine how Hampton was feeling walking to school and having mobs of people yelling, spitting, and throwing things at her. But despite the negativity and violence, she handled everything with courage and grace. She kept pushing forward and looked ahead at the future she could make for herself. That is a difficult position to be in because, for some, remaining strong and unfazed during horrible acts like this is challenging. But Hampton did it, and she continued to attend school even with the undeserved hatred surrounding her. She then proceeded to continue her education and obtained her Ph.D. After that, she used her knowledge to help those in her community fight against racial and social justice issues. We can all learn a lot from these two amazing women. Both showed us to conduct ourselves and our actions with bravery and courage. They taught us that even if it’s outside of the norm and societal standards, do what you think is right. Never be afraid to go against the majority and stand up for what you believe in. Although it can be intimidating, Sybil Ludington and Sybil Jordan Hampton have shown us to keep pushing forward and place one foot in front of the other. These women taught me what it looks like to show bravery, courage, and grit. The lessons we learn from them can be used today. I hope this story inspires you to always stand up for what you believe in, no matter what.

Although I am no longer in school, I still have a love for history. I’ve always enjoyed learning about what society was like in the past, the individuals who made their mark on history, and how those events led us to where we are today. I like to think of myself as a lifetime learner — I will research events, people, and anything that catches my interest. Recently, I learned about two women in history who inspire me. Ironically, both of these women are named Sybil. The first woman is 16-year-old Sybil Ludington. She is an American Revolutionary War icon, making her the perfect person to talk about since we celebrated the Fourth of July last month! She is remembered for her role in defense against the British attacks. On April 16, 1777, a messenger reached the Ludington house with the news the British were planning an ambush on Danbury, Connecticut. This location is where the resources for the militia were stored. As soon as Ludington heard about this plan, she knew she needed to do something. So, she jumped on her horse and rode nearly 40 miles to spread the news — she’s the female version of Paul Revere! What interested me about this historical event is that I never learned about it in school. You would think having my concentration in early American history, I would’ve learned this! Instead, I first heard of Sybil Ludington when I looked at different runs and races. I came across the annual Sybil Ludington road race in New York that follows the path she took when warning others about the British. I was shocked and fascinated at the same time, and I immediately began researching her. What inspires me about Ludington is that during the colonial period, you think of women wearing poufy and uncomfortable dresses, being brought up proper, and tending to the home. But there Ludington was — galloping on her horse. She was breaking societal norms for a good cause. She stood up when times were tough. To her, it didn’t matter if she wasn’t the traditional person to do such a thing. Ludington knew something had to be done, so she did it.

Another woman who inspires me is Sybil Jordan Hampton. Sybil is from Little Rock, Arkansas, and grew up under the Jim Crow

E SHOULDN’T BE ONE OF THEM

include this negativity can cause you stress and anxiety. Instead, avoid reading these stress-provoking materials and try not to compare yourself to the page you’re reading. Aging isn’t a bad thing — it’s a part of life! Focus on the things that bring you joy and pay attention to how your body feels. 3. Practicing Independence: One of the hardest things that can decrease your self-esteem is no longer being able to do things on your own. But needing help with day-to-day tasks doesn’t have to tie to your self-worth. It’s okay to ask for help, and it can even free up your time to explore other interests and hobbies you may not have had time for in the past. Another way to show independence and build your self-esteem is by completing or updating your estate plan. You can choose where your assets go, decide who will be your power of attorney for your medical and financial needs, and ensure your wishes are granted. Knowing everything is taken care of and your desires are in a document will help you feel less stressed and overwhelmed. If you have any questions about your estate plan, allow your friends at Trinity Elder Law & Estate Planning to help. We will be happy to go over your wishes and ensure everything is in order.

Edwards Ice Cream Shop 518 Bairdford Rd. EdwardsIceCream.com

Julie visits this parlor frequently; in fact, her father used to come here all the time. This ice cream there has so much history because it’s been around for over 50 years. Edwards Ice Cream Shop is even near Julie’s local high school — so, when she needed a nice after-school snack, this was the place to be. This parlor has a variety of mouth-watering flavors for its soft serve cones, hard ice cream cones, sundaes, banana splits, arctic swirls, smoothies, milkshakes, and floats. If you need something more than ice cream, you can even get some food while you’re there.

Mazzanti’s Beans and Cream 1800 N. Main St. MazzantisBeansAndCream.com

Mazzanti’s Beans and Cream’s journey started on June 1, 2007. This family-owned business prides itself on making homemade, high-quality ice cream. Their soft serve ice cream is the real deal, made from real cream, not powder mix. They add new flavors to their menu if requested by you. For example, many customers wanted an ice cream flavor in the shade of purple, so they made a blueberry ice cream. And the bean in Mazzanti’s Beans and Cream stands for their delicious brewed coffee. So, stop by and try some of their specialty ice creams and coffees!

PEANUT BUTTER AND PUMPKIN DOG TREATS

Corner Cones 399 Bonniebrook Rd. CornerCones.com

On top of adding a new flavor to their menu each week, Corner Cones serves made-to-order food; 20 flavors of milkshakes, smoothies, and sundaes; and 30 different flavors of their hard scoop and soft serve ice creams. But unlike other ice cream parlors, Corner Cones invites their customers to stay a while and relax. They have a miniature train your kids or grandkids can play on, a field, and a coloring station. It’s a great place for children to burn off the sugar rush their ice cream will give them. There is also a lighted pavilion you can hang out in. Try out these parlors the next time you need to cool off because of the summer sun or if your sweet tooth is getting the best of you. These shops will do the trick!

A True Canine Hero

BY DIALING 911 A ROUND OF A-PAWS THIS AMAZING PUP SAVES THE DAY — TWICE!

The dog then put the net down on the ground near the pond and brought the ball over to the boy. This German shepherd saved the day for this little boy and girl — and also saved the boy from injury and needing a dry set of clothes! What an amazing canine. He deserves a treat and a round of a-paws!

Heroes don’t always wear capes or stand on two legs — and in a specific case with a German shepherd, this is exceptionally true! A dog noticed that one of his favorite tiny humans was in some serious danger, so he saved the day, two times! A little boy and girl enjoyed the day, tossing a ball back and forth in their backyard. When the girl overthrew the ball, it unfortunately fell into a small pond behind the boy. The girl rushed inside the house to get help, but the boy stayed outside and even ended up leaning over the edge of the pond as he tried to retrieve the ball on his own. This is when a protective German shepherd, lying nearby in the grass, saw everything and immediately sprung into action. The dog first looked into the pond to locate the ball. Then, knowing the boy was in danger as he teetered on the edge, the dog tugged on the little boy’s vest with his teeth, pulling him backward to safety near the back patio of the home. Once the little boy was in a safe location, the dog located a pole net that had been leaning against the house and brought it over to the pond. While his tail wagged with pride, the dog fished the ball out of the pond.
