Choosing the Right Medicare Plan for LGBTQI+ Individuals

By Sarah Bahnson, LGBTQI+ Initiatives Specialist Selecting a Medicare plan can be daunting, particularly for LGBTQI+ individuals with unique healthcare needs. To help you make the best choice, here are some key factors to consider: 1. Find LGBTQI+-Friendly Providers When choosing a Medicare plan, it is essential to ensure access to healthcare providers who understand and respect your identity. Look for plans that include doctors and specialists known for being inclusive and knowledgeable about LGBTQI+ health issues. You can also consult resources such as the Healthcare Equality Index to find supportive providers. Having a provider who is sensitive to your needs can significantly improve your healthcare experience and outcomes. 2. Check Coverage for Gender-Affirming Care For transgender and nonbinary individuals, access to gender-affirming care is crucial. Make sure the plan covers services such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), surgeries, and counseling. Not all plans offer comprehensive

coverage for these services, so it is important to verify what is included. 3. Review Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D) Prescription drug coverage varies between Medicare plans, so it is important to review the formulary — the list of covered medications. Check for drugs related to HRT, PrEP, HIV treatment, and other medications you take regularly. Confirm that your preferred pharmacy is in-network, particularly if it is known for being LGBTQI+-friendly. 4. Access to Mental Health Services Look for plans that include mental health services from providers who are welcoming and experienced in working with LGBTQI+ individuals. Access to quality mental health support can help you navigate life’s challenges and maintain overall well-being. 5. Evaluate Costs and Coverage When choosing a Medicare plan, compare premiums, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance rates. Consider the services you use most often and ensure they are covered affordably. If you are partnered and not married, check how the plan handles coverage for partners, as this
