Gratitude

N ovember is here, friends! Time for pumpkin spice everything, cozy sweaters, and of course, the forever gratitude. As a mom of three busy, healthy children, I know I have plenty to be thankful for: my family, supportive friends, and the occasional quiet time that lasts longer than 30 seconds. But while I’m counting my blessings, I can’t help but notice a few things that make me question the manners of the younger generation. Is it too much to ask for a little courtesy? I’m not asking for handwritten thank-you notes for every snack I serve— though that would be nice—but how about holding the door open for the person following you into the building, even if they are a few steps further back, instead of letting the door slam in their face? I think my kids have seen too many superhero movies equipped with a force field and think they’re supposed to let the door do all the heavy lifting. And let’s talk about the “please” and “thank you” phenomenon.

Growing up, I was taught that these phrases are the golden tickets to a polite society. Now, I’m just trying to get my kids to say “yes” instead of rolling their eyes at me like I just randomly suggested we get an iguana or something. Is it really that difficult to add a little respect into your responses? At what point did parents stop teaching to respect your elders? I mean it’s in the 10 commandments, number 5: Honor your father and your mother. America needs to get back on track with manners and gratitude as we move forward in this next era we call life. So, as we prepare to gobble up turkey and pumpkin pie, let’s all take a moment to reflect on what we are truly thankful for. For me, it’s my family, friends, and the hope that my kids will someday learn the fine art of door-holding and polite conversion. Maybe I’ll even set up a little manners boot camp

over break—who’s in? Happy Thanksgiving!

I s your family talking about giving back this Thanksgiving holiday through acts of kindness or service work? The New Orleans Public Library has many books on giving back—from picture books that illustrate the joys of sharing and community, to inspiring stories for those looking for ways to enact real change.

from the bookshelf

YOUNG READERS In Give Back by Gina Bellisario and Alicia Mas, young readers can celebrate kindness and sharing through a heartwarming story. The book follows a little girl and her multigenerational family as they prepare for a community meal and clothing drive, discovering the many ways they can give to those around them. At Our Table by Patrick Hulse and Madelyn Goodnight is all about sharing, community, family, food, and respect for America’s first inhabitants. In this lyrical, colorful book, children can explore the countless ways we give to others on Thanksgiving— from preparing food to honor farmers and Native communities to creating memories with those we love.

YOUNG ADULT For teens looking for real- world inspiration, try Don’t Wait: Three Girls Who Fought for Change and Won by journalist Sonali Kohli. The book follows three girls of color on the front lines of the fight for equal rights and how their efforts helped make their communities safer, healthier places. In We Don’t Have Time for This by Brianna Craft, Issa Brown, co-president of her high school’s environmental justice club, wants to make real change. But, her infuriating co-president, hustler Darius Freeman, wants to do things his own way, and as they constantly clash over everything, both their hearts and their communities are at risk.

When a neighborhood park needs repair in 1 2 3 Counting on Community by Annemarie Riley Guertin and Cory Reid, the community comes together to give it new life. From raking leaves to painting benches and planting a communal garden, everyone joins forces to beautify their shared space in this inspiring story about working together. MIDDLE GRADE Make Your Mark, Make a Difference: A Kid’s Guide to Standing Up for People, Animals, and the Planet by Joan Marie Galat shows middle grade readers how to take the first steps into activism. This comprehensive guide empowers readers to choose and become knowledgeable in a cause they are most passionate

about and to create meaningful change. In Gayle Forman’s Not Nothing , Alex is working at a nursing home when he meets Josey, a 107-year- old Holocaust survivor who stopped talking years before. But, as the two form an unlikely bond, Alex starts to believe he can make a difference in the world. For the young activists in your family, Charlene Rocha, Mary Beth Leatherdale, and Drew Shannon’s You Can Be an Activist: How to Use Your Strengths & Passions to Make a Difference is a great read. It covers everything from choosing a cause and doing the research, to deciding on a goal, and getting it done. Along the way, readers get practical tips on handling specific tasks, like creating a petition and leading a team.

12 NOVEMBER 2024 | NOLAFAMILY.COM the planet. The knowledge they gain extends far beyond the forest and into their everyday lives, empowering them to make personal commitments for environmental change. Knowledge, Experience, Yourself, and Sharing. These keys help students reflect on how life on Earth is interconnected and how their actions can impact A t Teaching Responsible Earth Education (TREE), the belief is simple yet profound: “Our students are the greatest natural resource on Earth.” For over two decades, TREE has been instilling this philosophy in children and adults alike, fostering a deep connection to nature, encouraging environmental stewardship, and nurturing an understanding of the life sciences that govern our planet. Through hands-on experiences and immersive storytelling, TREE’s programs seek to make environmental education accessible and engaging for everyone. A Journey of Discovery A recent Earthkeepers expedition observed by Nola Family on October 15, 2024, highlighted the magic that TREE brings to its participants. This program, one of TREE’s signature offerings, is aimed at 4th graders and focuses on key scientific concepts—energy flow, cycles, interrelationships, and change. Over the course of three days in the forests of Luling, Louisiana, 50 eager students embarked on an educational adventure that connected them to the natural world in meaningful and lasting ways. Throughout the expedition, students explore the forest, engage with environmental science, and earn brass keys symbolizing four core values: Teaching Responsible Earth Education BY MADISON VOORHIES

Bringing Science to Life TREE’s impact doesn’t stop with Earthkeepers. Programs like Sunship Earth and Sunship III cater to older students in grades five through seven. These immersive, multi-day camps on the Northshore teach critical environmental concepts such as food chains, energy flow, and ecosystems through experiential learning. Whether it’s working as “food producers” inside a leaf to understand photosynthesis or becoming clouds traveling through the water cycle, these activities are designed to make abstract concepts tangible and fun for children. According to Waves, one of TREE’s nature educators, “It’s all the same information. We just want people to understand how the Earth’s processes and systems work beautifully, naturally, [and] on their own, and then realize how you can enjoy it and what part you play in those systems.” TREE also offers Earthwalks, which are interactive experiences in nature designed for all ages. These hour- long explorations invite participants to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with the natural world. A Legacy of Learning TREE’s success can be traced back to its founder, Sue “Firefly,” a former classroom teacher who envisioned something more tangible for her students. Waves recounts how Firefly discovered the Institute for Earth Education’s curriculum and fell in love with the way it made science come alive for children. “She adopted that curriculum and started teaching it while she had her fifth-grade class. After a couple of years of that, she left the classroom and went fully to teaching

these programs outdoors.” The dedication and thoughtfulness that Firefly brought to her programs continue to guide TREE’s efforts, as the organization adapts and expands its reach to new generations of students. The Importance of TREE’s Mission Why is TREE’s work so important, especially in today’s world? Waves captures the heart of it: “There are a lot of things going on in the world that cause a lot of upset and panic about the way that we’re treating our planet. A lot of these issues around climate change, even local things in our communities, have to do with having an understanding of the basic systems of the Earth.” TREE’s programs aim to provide students with that foundational understanding, giving them the tools to make informed decisions about how they live their lives and how they interact with the environment. “If these kids don’t remember any of the science that we’re teaching them, that’s okay. I want them to walk away with at least a new perspective or hopefully a new appreciation for the natural world.” Ultimately, TREE’s mission is about creating connections—between people and the Earth, between knowledge and action, and between education and empathy. Through its immersive programs, TREE reminds us that the natural world is not just something to be studied but something to be cherished, appreciated, and protected. AMY BOYLE COLLINS BY MADISON VOORHIES PHOTO BY BLINK PHOTOGRAPHY

Husband: Sherwood Collins Children: Liam, 14, and Wesley, 13 Occupation: CEO of Gambel Communications Hobbies: All things New Orleans: festivals, music, eating, and sports— especially the Saints

14 NOVEMBER 2024 | NOLAFAMILY.COM spectrum, and Wesley, an ambitious scout with dreams of running Beignet Fest one day. Through the ups and downs of raising teenagers, Amy reflects on how motherhood has enriched her life and shaped her leadership style, reminding us all of the beauty in slowing down and being present. A my Boyle Collins is a passionate community leader and dedicated mother. As the Chair of the Beignet Fest Foundation and a board member of both the Jefferson Chamber and New Orleans Chamber, Amy has made significant contributions to the cultural fabric of our city. Her journey into nonprofit leadership began in the wake of Hurricane Katrina when her desire to give back led her to become the executive director of the Young Leadership Council, where she famously met her husband while working on community events. Today, Amy embraces the joys and challenges of parenting two dynamic boys—Liam, who is on the autism

WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? AMY: [I’m an] early riser; 5 a.m. is ideal. I like to go to the gym a couple days a week, then get the kids up and moving, [and] get ready for the day. [We’re] out the door by 7:15 a.m., one hour commute to bring Liam to school and get to my office. My husband brings Wesley to school and gets to his office. [I’m] very busy juggling Gambel, Beignet Fest, and other civic engagements. I love that I can stop at 2:30 p.m., pick up Liam from school, and finish my day at home. Usually, [I] log off for dinner and family time about 6 p.m. Bed by 9 p.m.! Early to bed, early to rise. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER? AMY: The ability to shape so much in our community. We work with some of the most impactful organizations in the community from Children’s Hospital to Historic New Orleans Collection to the

New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter to my very own Beignet Fest Foundation. WHAT ARE SOME JOYS AND CHALLENGES OF BEING A MOM? AMY: Joys–seeing them grow, achieve, seeing their personalities. Challenges– watching them struggle and fail, dealing with them not being me–they are very different in the way they approach their life, and I can’t force them to do it my way. That’s really hard for me. I’m a control freak! HOW HAS YOUR PARENTING STYLE EVOLVED TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S INDIVIDUAL NEEDS? AMY: I was raised where you earned what you got, you picked yourself up when you fell, [and] only the best was good enough. I tried parenting that way [with a] “fear of God” mentality– and

my kids were unphased. They are much more laid back, not motivated by fear at all. Affirming their actions is what gets the best results. So, I have to slow down and stay positive instead of yelling and stressing! WHAT’S YOUR GO- TO FAMILY ACTIVITY? AMY: Football Sundays, cooking, and eating together; co-existing while we do our own thing isn’t bad either. WHAT ARE SOME MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PARENTING A CHILD ON THE SPECTRUM THAT YOU WISH OTHERS UNDERSTOOD BETTER? AMY: That it’s the same for everyone– it’s not. It’s a spectrum meaning it varies for everyone. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO OTHER PARENTS? AMY: Parent the way you eat an elephant, but don’t eat your children! Take it one step at a time. Keep loving

them through everything. Don’t give up. Pour into them. Rest when you can. Beignet Fest, founded in 2016 by Amy and her husband Sherwood, is more than just a celebration of the iconic New Orleans treat; it’s a heartfelt initiative born from their desire to give back to the community. After facing challenges as parents of a child on the autism spectrum, the couple realized the need for inclusive summer activities for families like theirs. As Amy explains, “We needed to do something to give back. We have all these advantages; we want to help other people, other families.” The festival brings together local culture bearers, musicians, and foodies, with a mission to raise awareness and funds for local nonprofits. In its inaugural year, Beignet Fest attracted overwhelming support, leading to a quick evolution from a small gathering to a major event that now welcomes over 10,000 attendees. Last year alone, the festival contributed $75,000 to local programs. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME TO BEIGNET FEST? AMY: New Orleans is built on looking out for each other and having a good

time. And this is both. At the end of the day, all those proceeds, not only is it an economic driver for those food vendors who keep all their sales, but it’s also an incredible fundraiser for us that we put right back into the community. Quick Q’s Go-to comfort food … French fries or bread (carb it up!). Favorite way to unwind after a long day … Sit on the porch with my dog and husband (sometimes kids with us but they are teenagers so they aren’t always) usually with a glass of wine or cup of coffee. Something most people don’t know about me … I type really fast. Like crazy fast. I haven’t timed myself in a long time but it’s impressive what muscle memory can do! Something I’m excited about right now … Beignet Fest is November 16. It’s our first time doing it in November and we’re thrilled at the prospects of true fall weather. Fingers crossed.

Open Arms, Open Hearts: The Reality and Rewards of Adoption BY MADISON VOORHIES PHOTO BY QUEENFRIDAY PHOTOGRAPHY

16 NOVEMBER 2024 | NOLAFAMILY.COM young woman she befriended confided in her that she had a three-month-old vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatments. However, after years of trying, they began to reconsider. However, fate (and God) had a different plan. In May 2012, Tara received life-changing text messages while serving in her church’s children’s ministry. A A doption is a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns, emotional highs and lows, and ultimately, profound love. For Tara and George, their journey began in heartbreak and ended in a family beyond what they could have imagined. Life After Loss In 2008, Tara and George’s hopes of starting a family came crashing down when Tara experienced a uterine rupture at 17 weeks, requiring an emergency hysterectomy and c-section. Devastated but determined to become parents, the couple explored other avenues to grow their family. Initially, they tried working with a surrogate, going through in

daughter she felt unable to care for, and she believed that Tara and George were meant to be her parents. “That was the shock of a lifetime,” Tara recalls. “We knew no circumstances; we knew not if this was permanent or temporary; we didn’t know anything, but it was just an absolute yes, we will take this baby for a minute, a day, or a lifetime.” On May 21, 2012, Chloe entered Tara and George’s lives. The young girl was living with her aunt, as her birth mother had been planning to place her for adoption but had not found the right family. “She was just shy of three months old, but she had a head full of hair that looked like a toupee,” Tara says, recalling her first time meeting Chloe. “She had long legs, the longest feet and toes that I had ever seen, and she was the cutest little thing I had ever seen.” From the beginning, Tara and George took a compassionate and respectful approach to their new role as Chloe’s parents. “We were not interested in From First Meeting to Forever Family

ripping a child away from people. We wanted everybody to be included in the conversation,” Tara says, reflecting on her efforts to ensure Chloe’s birth family was comfortable with the adoption. That first week was a whirlwind as Tara and George navigated legal channels, starting the process of private adoption. “The three of us lived out of our master bedroom and bathroom for about three and a half weeks after [Chloe] came to live with us. I say all the time: God has a sense of humor.” Though Chloe immediately felt like part of the family, the legal process was not swift. After a 10-day revocable period during which Chloe’s birth mother could change her mind, Tara and George began the long road to formalize the adoption. It took two years to finalize everything–a process that involved extensive paperwork, home studies,

background checks, and psychological evaluations.

Being Honest and Open From the start, Tara and George decided to be fully open with Chloe about her

adoption. “We’re an open book about it,” Tara explains. “She has known as long as she can remember that she is adopted. We’ve not had any secrets with her about it.” One of the things Tara and George learned through surrogacy research was that children who aren’t told about their adoption can experience a sense of betrayal or distrust for their birth parents later in life, which was something they did not want for Chloe. Their conversations with Chloe about her adoption have always been centered around love and the belief that their family was meant to be. They explained simply that, “God chose us to be a family.” And to put it into perspective for young Chloe, Tara explained to her, “This is your norm. Everybody has their own normal; this is your normal, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s nothing to be embarrassed by. This is part of your testimony, and one day you’ll understand how to speak about your testimony from your perspective.” Tara emphasizes the importance of letting Chloe guide the conversations. One of the most beautiful aspects of Tara and George’s adoption journey has been their ongoing relationship with Chloe’s birth family. “[We] never had any kind of formal agreement. Everything’s

always just been very organic.” Tara says. “We don’t do daily life together [with her birth family], but we do have a very open relationship, keep tabs on one another, and see each other [a] couple times a year. It’s not hard to get together when we can, but we’ve always let birth mom guide that.” This openness has fostered a strong sense of love and belonging for Chloe. “She’s got more people that love her, and how can you not like that?” Throughout their journey, Tara and George have encountered many misconceptions about adoption. “I think a big one is that ‘birth parents give up babies because they just don’t want them,’” Tara says. “People give up babies for lots of reasons or choose to have other people raise their children for lots of reasons.” Another common misconception is that adoption is Addressing Adoption Misconceptions prohibitively expensive. Tara and George spent around $5,000– mainly on legal fees. “It doesn’t have to be expensive,” Tara explains. “Private adoption is a thing that can be binding, but definitely go through legal channels because you don’t want it to come back and bite you one day.”

A Living Testament Tara and George’s story is a testament to the power of love and faith. Despite the challenges they faced, their family came together in a way they never could have planned. “She’s an amazing kid,” Tara beams. “She’s 12 now, [and] she does all the things in school; she loves sports, art, she does well in school, and it’s just really been an organic process for us.” Through their openness and unwavering commitment, Tara and George have created a family built on love, trust, and the belief that every child deserves a home. “Losing my son in 2008 was the worst and best thing that has ever happened to me,” says Tara. “Because I would have never gotten to meet [Chloe] if it wasn’t for his sacrifice.” While the process may come with challenges, the rewards are immeasurable. Remember, adoption is not just about giving a child a home— it’s about giving them the opportunity to be part of a family rooted in love, acceptance, and belonging. As we celebrate the beauty of adoption, let’s continue to support one another in creating bright futures for children through this incredible process.
