N E W S L E T T E R OUR THERAPISTS LEARNING ABOUT NEW PROCEDURES THAT CAN HELP YOU PLATELET-RICH PLASMA THERAPY

Platelet-rich plasma therapy is the treatment of choice for many elite athletes to help them recover from injury. In 2013, Kobe Bryant traveled to Germany for this then innovative procedure for knee and Achilles’ tendon injuries. Stephen Curry had Platelet-Rich Plasma for a grade 1 MCL sprain during Game 4 of the team’s first-round series against the Houston Rockets in 2016. Now doctors are now using platelet-rich plasma therapy or PRP injections to promote healing in every day athletes and in older patients with chronic arthritis. Fast facts about platelet-rich plasma therapy: • Doctors use PRP to encourage healing and to reduce inflammation • A doctor doing a PRP injection will first draw blood from the person being treated. The blood is processed in a centrifuge to isolate the PRP and then injected into the affected area. • The costs for PRP injections is $700 per injection. It is currently not covered by

insurance. Many patients only need one injection. * Side effects can include mild pain for 1-2 days. • It can be injected in almost any joint or in an area of soft tissue injury. • How does it work? * Platelets contain substances that promote healing and attract stem cells to the area. This initiates the bodies healing response in the tissues and joints. •What are the benefits? * Faster healing times and reduced need for surgery and cortisone injections. It’s entirely natural and nothing is added to the PRP that is not already in your blood. ~ Article written by Dr. Edward Rubin

N E W S L E T T E R RELIEVING HIP, KNEE AND LEG PAIN YOU DON’ T NEED TO SUFFER ANY LONGER

INSIDE : • Does Arthritis Pain Grind You Down? • Refer A Friend Your hip, knee and lower leg are tough—but injuries happen. Your hips and knees are your largest joints, supporting your body’s weight. They work in close coordination, giving us the mobility we need. Between arthritis, injuries and age, however, pain can flare up. What Causes Hip, Knee and Leg Pain? Hip, knee and leg pain are surprisingly common. Thus, their source can come from a variety of things. If you’re experiencing pain in any part of your leg, pinpointing the exact spot can help you determine the cause. Mayo Clinic has pinpointed several leading causes of hip, knee and leg pain. While many causes exist, the most likely are:

While some causes are more severe than others, a physician can identify each. As the body ages, joints become inflamed. Cartilage may wear down, reducing the “buffer” between bones. In some cases, limited blood flowmay cause bone tissue death, or necrosis. If you’re experiencing redness, inflammation and immobilized joints, the condition may be severe. What Are the Symptoms? While leg pain is noticeable by a slew of symptoms, several stick out. Aching or stiffness around the hip, groin, back or thigh may be a sign of deeper problems. A decreased range of motion, too, is a sign of deeper problems which may later result in hip, knee or leg pain. Sometimes, inactivity can contribute to immobility—and later pain. If you’re limping, lurching or are experiencing bad balance, contact a physician. While some hip, knee and leg pains go away, those lasting longer than several months may be hinting at a deeper issue.

Does Arthritis Pain Grind You Down?

Millions of Americans suffer from arthritis pain every day, taking Ibuprofen and stronger medications to numb the pain and address the ongoing inflammation. The definition of arthritis is joint inflammation, however the term has acquired a wider meaning. Arthritis is now used as a generic term for osteoarthritis and other conditions that affect joints. The pattern, severity and location of arthritis symptoms can vary depending on the specific form of the disease. Typically, arthritic conditions are characterized by pain and stiffness in and around one or more joints. The symptoms can develop gradually or suddenly. Certain rheumaticconditions can also involve the immunesystem and various internal organs of the body. Physical therapy is an important part of the ongoing treatment for arthritis. Physical therapy strengthens, stretches and stabilizes muscles surrounding affected joints providing needed support. Relieving Joint Pain Exercising is important to help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Light to moderate-intensity physical activity can actually prevent a decline in function, even restoring health. However, some people with arthritis may be reluctant to exercise because of joint pain after activity. You can take various steps to relieve pain, such as heat and cold therapy, or pain relievers, making it easier for you to exercise and stay active. In addition to physical therapy, choose non-impact exercises such as bicycling, swimming or water exercise. Furthermore, research shows that even modest weight loss combined with exercise is more effective in decreasing pain and restoring function than either weight loss or exercise alone. If you are suffering from arthritis pain, call us today and discover how we can relieve your pain, returning you to a more active, pain-free lifestyle!

Studies show that regular exercise can improve gait, balance, stability, strength, motor control, and delay disease progression in the PD client. Our therapists learned how to WAKE-UP the central nervous system and retrain thebrain to improveandhelp restoreneuromuscularcommunication, cognitive function, and cognitive function during movement. They also learned how advanced cognitive training, dual tasking, and problem solving training techniques help to reduce falls, injuries, and improve quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders.

In the couple of months I have been at Reddy-Care Physical Therapy, the pain and tension in my shoulder has become almost non-existent! “I came in feeling completely wound up with so much tension that my shoulder felt like a rock. Some nights it was tough to sleep because there was a lot of discomfort in my neck and shoulders. It wasn’t so bad at first but the tension grew to the point where I needed the issue addressed threapeutically. In the couple of months I have been at Reddy-Care Physical Therapy, the pain and tension in my shoulder has become almost non-existent!The exercises in the office were reasonable and the stretches I do at home were easy to do as well. Over time my rock-like shoulders became loose and relaxed! This place really did make a difference for me!” - S.D.
