UCNI 2023-24 Annual Impact Report

By studying unique speech and facial movement patterns, Farid’s team has created AI-driven models that flag inconsistencies in manipulated videos. These advancements are setting a new standard for digital security, offering an essential layer of protection for high-profile individuals at risk of impersonation. Beyond misinformation, Farid’s research is already being applied in real-world scenarios. In collaboration with LinkedIn, his team has successfully deployed AI detection tools to combat fraudulent accounts on the platform, safeguarding a network of more than 1 billion users.

“The ability to see our work go beyond the lab and into deployment at this scale is a major milestone for any academic research,” Farid states. Additionally, YouTube has provided $170,000 in unrestricted funds to support this research, further underscoring the importance of his work in maintaining trust in digital content. UC Noyce Initiative Funding Allows for Real-World Applications UCNI played a pivotal role in advancing this globally important work. By providing early funding, the initiative enabled Farid’s team to develop forensic techniques and expand their reach into real-world applications. “Having the freedom to focus on the science and its applications has been invaluable,” Farid explains. “With the support of UCNI, we’ve been able to refine our methods and ensure that they can be deployed effectively in high- stakes environments.” Politically Neutral Funding Helps Deepfake research is not just a technological challenge—it can also be a political and ethical minefield. As Farid points out, the field of disinformation research is highly politicized, with many researchers facing backlash or interference. This is where UCNI played a pivotal role. “Because work in deepfakes and disinformation is so politicized, funding from UCNI has allowed us to carry out our research free from political interference or fear of retribution,” Farid explains. “We’ve seen what happens to colleagues elsewhere. Having the freedom to focus on the science and its real-world applications has been invaluable.” Crucial Work in Safeguarding Digital Integrity As deepfake technology continues to evolve at an alarming pace, Farid’s work remains crucial in safeguarding digital integrity. He emphasizes the need for continued innovation and vigilance. “We are in a digital arms race,” he warns. “AI-generated misinformation is only getting more sophisticated, but so are we. The tools we are developing today will help protect the integrity of information tomorrow.” Thanks to the foundational support from UCNI, Farid’s research is leading the charge against deepfake deception— ensuring that in a world of digital illusions, the truth still has a fighting chance. ◆
