Graduation Ceremony 2022 Celebrating the success of our students

CIPP graduates were recognised for all their hard work and achievements at the Graduation Ceremony on Friday 4 November 2022. Family, friends, tutors, CIPP staff and dignitaries all came together to celebrate and congratulate the success of our students at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

More than ever, obtaining professional qualifications are what distinguish individuals as true leaders in their profession.

So why are professional qualifications necessary? In payroll and pensions, they are essential because of the need to update skills and knowledge according to ever-changing government legislation and regulations. Employers also have certain expectations, and they demand that the professionals they employ can do their jobs to the highest standard.

The Institute’s achievement of Chartered status helps demonstrate the valuable contributions that payroll and pensions professionals provide, not only within business but also to UK society as a whole.

The Institute would like to congratulate all our graduates and wish them the best in their future endeavours. And remember, education does not have to stop here – we encourage you to keep up to date with all the latest legislation changes by involving yourself in continuing professional development.

The CIPP would like to thank...

GRADUATION CEREMONY

Chair’s address

Liz Lay MSc FCIPPdip FHEA ACIPD Chair, CIPP

Good afternoon, ladies, gentleman, honoured guests and, of course, our very special graduands.

Today we’re going to hear several guest addresses, which will resonate with you all in recognising what you have achieved, and you should feel a huge sense of pride. Next week, when you return to work, don’t forget your certificate should take pride of place. Be proud and remember to show it to your team and colleagues – you deserve the recognition and congratulations, and some of you may even receive a pay increase for your achievement. Don’t forget, if you maintain your membership and continue to learn through continuing professional development, you can also use the formal designatory letters after your name. Looking to the future, you may be considering further study, aiming for a promotion or moving to a different role. You might even consider becoming a tutor yourself one day to share your experience and knowledge with future students. Whichever path you take, I hope you’ll consider working towards Chartered membership of the CIPP. We can support you throughout your career to ensure you stay at the top of your profession, help you to better yourself with continued learning and, as a result, you’ll encourage others to follow in your footsteps. For the hours, days and months to come, cherish this moment – we, at the CIPP, honour and applaud your effort, and take pride in our contribution in helping you achieve your qualifications. As a result of all your efforts that we celebrate here today, we welcome you to a family of truly committed payroll and pension professionals. Congratulations, well done and whatever direction you choose to steer yourself in, we wish you the best of luck, and thank you so much for letting us join you for such a wonderful day.

Thank you, Ian, for a great warm up and thank you, Sue, for being our master of ceremonies.

I’m delighted to join you all to celebrate today and extend a very warm welcome to all our guests both on stage, in the audience and at home. We’ve all learned a lot about connecting virtually over the last couple of years and it’s fantastic to be able to live stream this ceremony so even more friends and family can cheer on our graduands today. I hope you’ll all be clapping, cheering, whistling, whooping along and making as much noise as possible wherever you are in the world. I know from studying myself, how extremely hard you have all worked to achieve this success, and I’m sure some of you may have thought you might not make it. I was a CIPP tutor for just over 20 years and during those years, I have supported many students through the Foundation Degree. I know just how much you deserve to receive this recognition today. I believe you all received a brochure when you arrived. On the first page of that brochure, you will see a quote from Nelson Mandela:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

You might feel that you’re not changing the world here today, but you have taken steps to change ‘your’ world and ‘your’ future. The pride your friends and family have in you is evident here today and it’s now your opportunity to thank them for their unconditional love, support and encouragement, through all of those long hours of study. Let’s have a big round of applause for family and friends.

For the hours, days and months to come, cherish this moment – we, at the CIPP, honour and applaud your effort, and take pride in our contribution in helping you achieve your qualifications

CLASS OF 2022

CEO’s address

Ken Pullar FCIPP Chief executive officer, CIPP

Good afternoon and welcome to graduands, friends, family, tutors and other guests. We are here to celebrate and support the graduands who have achieved a major milestone in your payroll or pension careers.

Let’s not lose track of that first point – we are here to celebrate your success – so don’t get comfortable, please all stand and give everyone around you a big round of applause for their achievements.

Your journey to this point will not have been an easy one. We all understand that learning while in employment and balancing our work, family, friends and studies and, of course, navigating the pandemic, will have been a huge challenge, but it’s one you have managed successfully, and you can all join in celebrating together today.

You should be incredibly proud of your achievement; knowledge is power, and you have worked hard to increase yours and open up career opportunities which aren’t available to unqualified peers. A huge well done.

But let’s not forget the husbands, wives, partners, friends and family members who have helped to get you here today. Those who have helped you juggle commitments, those who have understood when you couldn’t make that night out, those that have passed you that drink while you studied on holiday. So, let’s take a moment to applaud those who have supported and helped you in being here today. Thank you all. You have helped your loved ones become true professionals in their industry. You’re now equipped with a significant range of knowledge and skills and, through maintaining your CIPP membership and using your designatory letters, you can shout about how brilliant you are. Your designatory letters demonstrate your qualification and professionalism to the world. Make sure you continue your membership with the CIPP to use these well-earned letters after your name. These letters not only demonstrate that you have achieved your qualification, but that you have access to the latest information and support in the industry, and that you’re a payroll or pensions professional worth having on the team. When we achieve goals in our lives, we often start to think about the next one. It’s a rare person who thinks, I’ve achieved everything I wanted to, and stops. While you may be thinking about a well-earned break at the moment, I’m sure it won’t be long before you start working on your next challenge or goal. Be that further qualifications or working towards Chartered membership with the CIPP – it’s all a little closer due to the qualification you have achieved.

Whatever you do next, remember learning is a lifelong journey, both personally and professionally, but wherever your journey takes you, I want to wish you the very best of luck.

And I’ll leave you with the words of Benjamin Franklin:

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.”

Enjoy your day and congratulations once again.

GRADUATION CEREMONY

Guest address

Helen Livesey MBA MREC CertRP Senior business director, Hays

Firstly, please allow me to pass on my warmest congratulations to all of you here today, such an incredible achievement and I know you have made your families and friends very proud, and you must be extremely proud too.

Many of us study so we can improve our skillset and self-development, but also so we can better ourselves, expand our mindsets and carve out the best career we’re capable of – so I thought I would give you a flavour of the current payroll job market and what we’re seeing here at Hays, so you can understand how your payroll qualification will help you thrive and achieve your career goals. Since you’ve been studying for your CIPP qualification, so much change has happened in the payroll industry which has been challenging for you all. Keeping everyone paid in the Covid-19 pandemic may have been a trying time, and created you all massive amounts of additional work, but what it also did is massively highlight the vital role of the payroll profession, and the importance of payroll within the economy and organisations. Hays and I welcomed the calls we received during the pandemic from finance directors and HR directors telling us just how much they valued their payroll department and how they would be lost without them – and this was really brought home to them during those challenging times. You’ve seen three prime ministers in the time you’ve been studying, and a few budgets along the way. But what hasn’t changed is how in demand your skillsets are in the world of work. In fact, you’ve become even more in demand than ever. I’ve worked for Hays for 22 years and I’ve never seen a market like this before. With the long-term structural issues within the UK labour market i.e., the retirement of the baby boomer generation, and the 1.2 million European Union workers who left the UK after Brexit, it makes it harder than ever for organisations to find quality payroll professionals like yourselves. We have a population of around 62 million, but only 29 million are now economically active and contributing to the economy. This is the lowest amount of people contributing to the world of work and the economy the UK has ever seen. This can open new opportunities and horizons if you’re looking for a new challenge in your career. Why am I telling you this? Because you currently have the most incredible amount of choice of job opportunities you may ever see in your career. You need to use this time wisely and plan your next career steps carefully. With your qualification and experience, you’re so marketable and have the key skills that employers want, and you need to use this to your advantage. This is an opportunity to go and test your skills and qualifications in the marketplace and find the best opportunity to help your career accelerate, using your qualification to its fullest. Managing your career can be difficult and confusing to many. Good advice, honest and open guidance and a caring approach are some of the values we pride ourselves in here at Hays. Our job is to ensure you find the best job, that’s right for you at every stage of your career.

Congratulations again and enjoy your celebration.

CLASS OF 2022

Guest address

Boyd Hargreaves MBS, PG (cert), PGCE, BA(Hons), FHEA Senior lecturer economics and business, University of Worcester

It is a privilege to be here today in my capacity as CIPP link tutor for the University of Worcester to help you all to celebrate this significant milestone in your careers: congratulations to you all.

Moreover, your achievements have had the added complications of the Covid-19 pandemic; the challenges that we have all had to endure make this face-to-face celebration of success in this beautiful setting more rewarding and inspiring – congratulations once again. I have been involved with the CIPP since January 2021, and I will be honest with you, my knowledge of both payroll and pensions was, and compared to all of you, remains somewhat limited. Yes, my wages appear in my bank account every month, and yes, my pension contributions are deducted, and yes, I take it for granted that this is accurate and timely. Perhaps most people are like me. My background in delivering and teaching economics and finance across a range of educational settings and institutions has obviously provided me with a little insight (at best, some insight), but I suspect that many people are unaware of the CIPP and the tremendous job that it does for your profession. Having said that, the people who really matter do know; your employers know, and anyone involved with payroll or pensions knows. As such, they know about your qualification, the importance of your qualification and the true value of your qualification. While this qualification is a significant milestone, it is not an end but merely another step, another chapter in your lives that will enable you all to meet the next challenges head on, and as I have been told many times in a variety of situations, we are all on different pathways in life. To give you a personal example, my mother was awarded a scholarship to study at Goldsmith’s in London in the early 1950’s – very unusual for a working-class woman from Lancashire, yet my father left school at 14 to become an apprentice toolmaker. His pathway was very different as he spent many years studying part-time at night school, before becoming a production engineer. I have three other siblings and education was very important for us. We were all expected to go to university with no discussion. What I’m attempting to illustrate here is that we are all on different pathways and from that we can all make choices and decisions that will enable us to go further and develop more in our careers, and as members of society. You all work for a variety of organisations, and your achievements to date mean that you have become more valuable and versatile employees, and I hope that this will be a catalyst to bigger and better things for you all. As you acquire more experience, you will have the opportunity to share this with other colleagues, perhaps by mentoring other more junior colleagues, perhaps in a leadership role or perhaps there will be the opportunity to become a CIPP tutor. Additionally, there will be opportunities to study further, to follow on from your Foundation Degree, for example.

There are, indeed, many possibilities that lie ahead and it is your choice which one you choose – the one that is most appropriate for you moving forward.

Finally, you should be proud of your achievements to date and be proud to celebrate these with family and friends alike. Congratulations once again, and my best wishes go to all of you as you move forward towards the next chapter of your lives.

2022 award winners

Foundation Degree in Payroll Management Best work-based project award 2022

Awarded to: Jekaterina Minalta

Tutor: Ros Hendren

The student work-based project is based on real life issues faced by their organisations and is probably the biggest piece of written work the students have ever done. It’s designed to challenge them. The project requires a great deal of academic research, studying, time and determination to manage that task, and to achieve an A+.

The winner of this award invested a huge amount of effort into this project, to reach conclusions and recommendations that are based on solid evidence from the research, and which will clearly benefit the payroll

operational team, as well as the service received by their clients. This student accessed an incredible amount of secondary research, ensuring that they were able to put forth comparable and opposing views, clearly indicating objective research to support the aims and objectives of the project. Their discussions were clear and concise, showing a mature approach to this task, presenting different aspects of the debate, with good application of best practice, and excellent summaries. Lastly, this student’s conclusions were comprehensive, providing a solid foundation from which to present their recommendations, which were completely representative of the research and analysis they had so excellently pulled together in this report.

This student should be very proud of their achievement with this project, their organisation will surely benefit from having this employee as an asset within their business, and from optimising their success by implementing the recommendations of this project.

“Winning this award is a very proud moment for me. I’m pleased my hard work was recognised. I’m truly thankful to my tutor, Ros for challenging me to be my best and instilling a passion in me for writing a proper project and nominating me for this award.

“I’d like to thank all my colleagues at Access SME Payroll Bureau who I approached for help during my research, but especially Michelle Chapman and David O’Meara for their endless support and encouragement. I’d like to thank my husband and two sons for their support. There were many long nights juggling work, family and school, but I’m happy to finally be done. It’s been tough but it’s all worthwhile. Without my family and colleagues, such achievements wouldn’t be possible, and I share this award with them.” Jekaterina Minalta

Foundation Degree in Payroll Management Student of the year award 2022

Awarded to: Aurelia-Georgeta Adochiei

Tutor: Alister Baldwin

For the Foundation Degree in Payroll Management student of the year award, tutors are asked to nominate one of their students whom, in their opinion, warrant the award. The student doesn’t have to be a straight A grade student, but they might have overcome work or personal issues to continue their studies. It was a great privilege for the Nomination Committee to read the nominations and they were simultaneously enlightened and humbled by each one. They have no doubt in their minds that each nominated person will go on to great things and will exceed even their own expectations.

This student persevered when they felt like they couldn’t continue with their studies. With English being their second language, they sometimes found it difficult to write assignments. In year three, they reached out to their tutor as they didn’t feel they had the skills to complete Level 5. With some words of encouragement from their tutor, this student continued with their studies, passing every module first time, and completing their Foundation Degree. “It’s such an honour to win the Foundation Degree in Payroll Management student of the year 2022 award. One year ago in November, I was close to giving up studies, but the encouraging words of my amazing tutor, Alister have had a positive impact on me. So, I continued into year three and now it feels so satisfying to have a Foundation Degree with the CIPP.” Aurelia-Georgeta Adochiei

Foundation Degree in Pensions Administration and Management Best work-based project award 2022

Awarded to: Christopher Payne

Tutor: Diane Stevenson

We have received numerous work-based projects submitted by our pension students over the years, which displayed passion and clear aptitude. And this year was no exception, with students producing some fine work.

The work-based project was able to set a very high standard through the student’s work on this area, from submission of the initial proposal right through to submission of the main project.

The winner of the award’s work-based project produced a very good chapter on methodology and explained the three primary research methods well, which enabled them to capture their research and the required data very thoroughly. The student’s data analysis was excellent in detail and depth, and was well evidenced in their appendices.

“The Graduation Ceremony has been amazing, receiving the award and seeing the presentation has been absolutely fantastic. The feeling of going up on stage was exhilarating and just overwhelming, it was unbelievable. I had a fantastic day.” Christopher Payne

Foundation Degree in Pensions Administration and Management Student of the year award 2022

Awarded to: Stephen Paines

Tutor: Diane Stevenson

The recipient of this year’s student of the year award for pensions has maintained a very high standard of work at a very consistent level throughout the year.

Their tutor wrote: “The student’s grades ranged between B+ to A, which evidences this achievement. Additionally, they submitted a work-based project of a similarly high standard to their other work, which had a theme of significant value to their employer in looking to address the loss of their payroll clients.”

“I was really surprised when I first heard that I had won a further award and it felt surreal. The course was demanding and no walk in the park. I was stretched and challenged by the course content, which is a sign of good education.

“The course enabled me to develop as an individual, refine my technical skills as well as to reflect upon options for the future. I studied every day in the lead up to the exams and for all of year three and believe this contributed to the outcome. I am grateful to my tutor, Diane Stevenson for being my guide through this academic journey.” Stephen Paines

BA (Hons) in Business Management Best independent research project 2022

Awarded to: Emma Chloe Williams

The independent research project provides students the opportunity to apply, integrate and deepen the knowledge, insights and skills they learnt throughout their programme of study, demonstrating their capacity to work on a major project, through real-world issues. The team at the University of Lincoln said this student’s research was undertaken within their organisation, underpinned by core theory, with a strong focus on organisational behaviour and the importance of recognising individual and situational differences to inform leadership practice. Through their interrogation of

the current literature and primary data collection, they were able to integrate relevant data to inform pragmatic solutions to support business success as they commenced a period of growth, while also adding to the field of knowledge surrounding motivation and leadership.

This person’s supervisor commended their dedication through the development of their independent research project, as they made “active strides to improve performance through hard work and commitment, taking responsibility for their own learning and positively responding to feedback to improve”, recognising “personal development has undoubtedly taken place” and “the study will be of interest and use to the organisation”. The independent research project was also recognised for demonstrating the application of learning upon personal and professional development, illustrating their impact upon driving innovation and business success, building self-confidence and evidencing their commitment to lifelong learning. “I’m thrilled to have been awarded the best independent research project for 2022, it’s such an honour. I’m so thankful to the University of Lincoln for their never-ending support, and also to the CIPP for providing me with the opportunity to study for my BA. I cannot recommend the CIPP or the University of Lincoln enough, and to anyone thinking about commencing study, I highly recommend it. I’ve always worked incredibly hard, and it’s so rewarding to have this recognised in my project. I’m incredibly proud to have received this award and touched by the comments of my tutors.” Emma Chloe Williams

MSc in Business and Reward Manegement Michelle Crook award for best MSc dissertation 2022

Awarded to: Hana Rajasova

The Michelle Crook award for best dissertation gives recognition to the student we feel provided the best dissertation of the group. The MSc dissertation is a demanding and in-depth piece of work which requires extensive planning, research and commitment. The teaching team at the University of Loughborough said this person was a model student in terms of diligence, enthusiasm and optimism. They had a real ability to negotiate opportunities to embed their learning within their organisation and demonstrated progression throughout the programme. A challenge to anyone in a

payroll function is being able to have a full picture of the wider organisation, and this student really achieved this. They were a delight to work with and the nomination for this award was unanimous from all involved in the delivery team at Loughborough University. We look forward to working with them as an alumna of the programme and wish them continued success in the future. “I’m delighted to have received this award and obtained my MSc. The real enjoyment can begin now all my hard work has paid off. Gaining the qualification has opened up so many doors for me, and I would do it all over again.” Hana Rajasova
