Here at Kimberly-Vincent, the challenges our health care workers face feel close to home. We have friends and family in the industry, and as you might remember from our December newsletter, Vince’s wife, Caren, is a doctor. She’s still seeing patients through this crisis at her dermatology practice, and though we worry for her safety, we’re so proud of her work. Local businesses like Sew Easy are even teaching people how to sew masks themselves on their home machines, and I’ve loved seeing positive stories like that in the news.

RAPID CHANGE 3 Things to Keep in Mind as the Economy Shifts in 2020

Everyone has questions about what’s next for the U.S. economy. Over the last few months, the markets have taken a hit, and the daily headlines are often grim. Some days, it can be hard to find the silver lining. You may be asking yourself, “What should I do to protect my money? My savings? My accounts?” While we don’t know how long COVID-19 will impact the economy, there are steps you can take to protect your wallet and your accounts. Here are a few important things to keep in mind. 1. DON’T STOCK UP. You don’t need to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars stocking up on things like toilet paper, meat, dairy products, or canned goods. While some supply chains will experience a few hiccups because of a

surge in demand, in reality, many supply chains remain intact. Stick to a shopping routine that takes you to the store no more than once or twice a week to minimize contact with others. If you want to save some dollars, cut out extravagances and shop for basic ingredients. If you’re not a home cook, now is a great time to learn. Browse YouTube, watch cooking tutorials, look up recipes, and give cooking a try. 2. DON’T PANIC SELL. The stock market has taken an unprecedented hit, which can be tough to watch. Your first impulse may be to act on emotion in order to save what you can. However, selling investments based on an emotional response can do more harm than good in both the short term and long term.

For one, you are now selling low rather than high. When the stock market recovers — which it will — you’ll no longer have those investments because you sold them. Stocks are a great long- term investment and should represent part of a diverse portfolio. Think rationally before selling. 3. DO CONSIDER BUYING. While the stock market may have taken a turn, now can be a good time to think about adding stocks to your portfolio — buy low, sell high. The stock market isn’t what it was a year ago, but the buying opportunity is there. Florida’s residency status is one of the most coveted in the nation because Florida residents cash in on all kinds of perks those in other states lack. For example, Florida has no income tax or estate tax, and our real estate taxes are appealingly low. It’s an irresistible trifecta for wealthy business owners and families looking to protect their assets. However, the only way to reap those Sunshine State benefits is by establishing residency — a process far too many new movers mishandle. At workshops and other events, one of our favorite things to do is ask the crowd what constitutes residency in Florida. We’ll ask, “How many people in the room agree that you can get Florida residency if you live here six months and one day?” and watch hand after hand go up

in the audience. Then, we’ll bust the myth. The truth is, there is no time requirement on Florida residency. Here, residency is all about intent. To truly be considered a Florida resident, you need to prove that Florida is not only your home, but your domicile — the place you intend to stay permanently. And that takes real attention to detail. As we’ve seen many billionaires find out the hard way, simply buying a home in Florida doesn’t cut it. You need to demonstrate your intent in any of a dozen small ways: by registering to vote here, or registering your car here, or ensuring your bank accounts, brokerage relationships, and medical directives are updated to Florida law. Gaining official residency can be a tricky process, but we’ve helped hundreds of people through it, beginning with buying the second or third home of their dreams in Naples. • 6 oz multigrain spaghetti • 8 oz fresh asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp lemon zest • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

• 1/2 tsp black pepper • 1 cup baby arugula

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 425 F. 2. In a large pot, cook spaghetti until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of water before draining and put spaghetti in a covered pot to keep warm. 3. Line a 15x10-inch baking pan with foil and toss in asparagus and olive oil. 4. Cook asparagus for 5–7 minutes and sprinkle with lemon zest. 5. Add 3/4 cup of the reserved water, Parmesan cheese, and pepper to the spaghetti. Stir until creamy. 6. Toss in asparagus and arugula before serving.

Bird-watching is like a lifelong scavenger hunt that you can play anywhere on Earth. The activity provides a mixture of science, travel, and beauty, and it’s a chance to get outside for feathered adventures and quiet reflection. The month of May is a great time of year to go birding because rising temperatures prompt spring migration. So if you're eager to begin bird-watching, there’s no better time than now. Here are some tips to get started.

GEAR UP One of the best things about birding is that you don’t need a lot of equipment to do it. As long as you’ve got your field guide and comfortable walking shoes, the only other thing you’ll need is a pair of binoculars. And they don’t have to be fancy. As long as they can zoom in on faraway trees and perches, they’ll work for now. You can always upgrade later. GO EXPLORING Your very first birding excursion is important because you don’t want to be overwhelmed or underwhelmed. So use your field guide to home in on a single bird and go find it. It may be local, or you can plan a trip to a specific bird’s natural habitat. Stay focused and don’t get distracted by other species. The thrill that comes with spotting your first bird will keep you coming back to find the rest. Bird-watching is a wonderful hobby because it’s easy to get started and can last a lifetime. As long as you can walk, drive, or look out a window, you can be a birder. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and find some birds!

EDUCATE YOURSELF Thousands of species of birds span all corners of the globe. That’s why finding them is an exciting prospect — there’s no end to the hunt! Start by researching birds that are native to your location. Purchase a field guide with pictures of each bird and maps of their range and use it to figure out where different birds live. From there, it’s easy to pick your first spotting goal. You can even get yourself extra excited by watching a few bird documentaries.
