A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

KEY SCHOOL DATES

This week we have been celebrating our annual book week by hosting a variety of workshops in school to spark our students’ creativity. On Tuesday we welcomed journalist and broadcaster Jemma Forte into school to talk to our A level Media and Politics students about her fascinating career. On Wednesday, we welcomed

two spoken word artists, Jayda David and Priyanka Moorjani, who delivered an empowering presentation to KS4, encouraging our students to be confident expressing themselves. On Thursday, our own Ms Lewis led a creative writing workshop for students in KS3 based on her book, Other Me. Once again there have been a number of trips out of school this week. Our Year 10 Spanish students returned from a trip to Cantabria yesterday. It was wonderful to hear how much they enjoyed their travels and the opportunity to put their language skills to good use. These last two weeks Year 9 have had the opportunity to visit Strawberry Hill House to complement their studies on Gothic literature in English. On Wednesday our Year 12 Drama students went to the National Theatre to see Mnemonic, a play that explores ideas about memory. Yesterday you will have received an email about the raffle organised by the Friends of Waldegrave. There are some fantastic prizes including meals out, beauty treats and summer sports clubs. If you missed this you can find further details here. This will be our last bulletin of the year before we break up at 12.45pm next Friday. Our final magazine of the year will be published next week where you can read more about some of the highlights of the term. I would like to thank everyone in our school community for ensuring this has been another happy and successful year at Waldegrave.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7

The end of term is a busy time for Year 7. Subject staff from Languages, Computing, DT, and Dance have presented their enrichment options for Year 8. Our students have also consolidated their work from Drop Down Day by producing a sales pitch for Friday’s assembly.

It was pleasing to watch the Year 7 Ultimate Frisbee team play their last fixture of the year on Monday, highlighting the diverse range of activities available for our students at Waldegrave. I am delighted that many of our Year 7 students have embraced the wide range of extracurricular clubs and teams that run each week.

The winners of this year’s house point competition will be announced next week, but the trailblazers this week were 7FLE, 7PIR, and 7EDA. Will it be enough to be crowned champions? We’ll have to wait and see!

Next week, we will have the Year 7 Celebration Assembly where we look back at a very successful year and crown our house point champions. We will be celebrating diversity at Waldegrave with a range of culturally themed activities on our Culture Afternoon before finishing the term with a celebration of our House Events.

As we reach the end of Year 7, I would like to congratulate all of our students on a hugely successful year. The step from primary to secondary school is a big one with plenty of hurdles to overcome, but I am proud of the way our students have met the challenge. It has been a real pleasure being their Head of Year. Ms Lyddon will be joining the school in September as the Head of Year 8, and she is looking forward to working with the year group. I would like to thank all parents and carers for their continued support and wish everyone a very restful summer break.

MR GREAVES, HEAD OF YEAR 7

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Safiyyah’s War by Hiba Noor Khan

As Setti once said “this is not goodbye, this is just see you later.”

Despite this book simply being words on a piece of paper, quotes like this can change people’s lives. This book is for anyone: people who have lost a loved one, people who are suffering through a war, people who love travelling. It is a powerful book about the importance of caring for other people, no matter who they are, what religion they are or what they believe in life.
