Teen-Age Smoking Linked to Homes

Most teen-age boys and girls who smoke probably pick up the habit from their parents, a scientific study has shown. This conclusion was indi cated by the American Cancer Society after a one-year investigation among 21,980 high school students in Port land, Oregon, and its suburbs. The re searchers also found cigarette smok ing was heavier among students with poor academic standing and among those who were inactive in extracurri cular activities. To show the relationship to smok ing habits of parents, the survey found that when both parents smok ed, 31.9 per cent of the sons and 18.5 per cent of the daughters also smok ed. If, however, neither parent smok ed only 16.7 per cent of boys and 6.8 per cent of girls smoked. When one parent smoked, the percentage of smokers among children was in be tween the extremes, 25.9 per cent for boys and 13.1 for girls. M issin g Link ? ? ? “A newly found skull is a link be tween man and Ape-Man,” according to Dr. Louis S. B. Leakey, British anthropologist, in his report given re cently at the Pan-African Congress of Prehistory at Leopoldville, Belgian Congo. According to the report, Dr. and Mrs. Leakey discovered the skull in the Olduvai George, Tanganyika. The skull was that of a youth which Dr. Leakey regards “ as the long- sought-for link between the South African near-man or ape-man and man.” He said the skull was “ the old est yet discovered of tool-making man.” He believes it is between 600,- 000 and 1,000,000 year old. The evolutionists are still seeking that MISSING LINK which the Bible-believing Christian is certain will never be found. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has purchased a Loew’s State Theatre to show religious pictures. Richard Cardinal Cushing says pro ceeds from film showings will be used to buy vehicles for the Legion of Mary, a missionary organization, in a campaign to combat communism in Catholic Church Buys Large Boston Theatre

Latin America. Loew’s State seats 3,583. It was built in 1922 f o r $2,000,000. The property is now as sessed for $1,140,000. It includes seventeen small offices and the Fine Arts Theatre^ which seats about 200. The Cardinal said, “ The Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary” will be the first film shown by the Church at Loew’s. The translation of an ancient docu ment purporting to contain 114 say ings of Jesus Christ will be published soon by Harper and Brothers. Accord ing to the report, many of the sayings are identical with or similar to those in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The sayings are ascribed to Jesus by an “ editor” identified as the Apostle Didymos Judas Thomas. The text was probably produced about 140 A.D. The find was made in Egypt by a group of peasants collecting fer tilizer in a tomb believed to have been part of the monastery of the Gnostic sect of early Christianity. Gnosticism was a movement parallel ing Christianity. It was regarded as a religion of sacraments and mysteries that apparently impelled the con solidation of Christendom as a church. The present sixty-two-page volume, “ The Gospel According to Thomas,” is a forerunner of a larger edition now in preparation containing the complete translation of thirteen papy rus volumes discovered in 1945 in upper Egypt. Fourteen years after the fall of the Nazi regime, an institution has been established in Cologne dedicated to “ bringing light to the questions of the relation of Germany to her Jewish population,” according to deutsche Korrespondenz, published in Bonn.
