“ T\/ir°MMIE>why did Joseph’s broth- J.vJlers put him in a well and then sell him to be a slave?” “Which Joseph are you talking about, Mark?” Mother wanted to lead the little fellow out, therefore she feigned ignorance. “ The Joseph who is in the Bible. Don’t you ‘bemember’ how his big brothers were bad to him and Joseph was taken to Egypt? Why did his brothers do that to him?” “ Yes, I remember the story. I think the brothers were jealous of him. They thought their father, Jacob, was better to Joseph than to them. I suppose they W'anted to get rid of him from around the home so they would get more from their father. What finally did happen to Joseph?” As Mother listened to her youngest child, this precious “ number nine,” two things stood out rather clearly to her. It was evident that Mark didn’t have to be a man of great age to real ize the injustices done to Joseph. Fur ther, his mind and heart were able to take in, comprehend, and give out to someone else the gist of the story with some detail. As she pondered her small son’s comprehension and interest in this famous Bible story, Mother was for cibly reminded how very important it is to teach the children. Small won der that those who propagate the devil-inspired ideologies of our day “ latch” upon little children and make captive their minds and emotions be fore the children are able to form any honest personal conclusions. How foolish is the parent who acts upon the unfounded assumption that small children cannot understand the things of the Spirit of God. It is not age or mental maturity which makes matters of the spirit intelligible, but rather that attitude of the heart which reaches out to God for the answers to life here and hereafter. Little children can reach out to God as they learn of Him. May we who are parents realize that God really meant it when He said: “ Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Prov. 22:6).
