MY MENTOR, MY HERO, MY DAD

A Hopewell Father’s Day Tribute

In January 2020, I broke my back, and as the only employee of EcoArmor at that time, that meant my income should’ve come to a complete halt. I was very stressed out about that, especially since our daughter had just arrived. I ended up telling my dad about the situation, as I usually do for all business and personal matters, and he, without thinking twice, told me to stop working and stop worrying — he’d step in for all my upcoming jobs. For two weeks, I sat in the car with all the gear while verbally instructing my dad on how to operate our equipment. The only payment he permitted me to give him was buying his lunch. That’s just the kind of guy my dad is. I’ve learned everything I know about having a good work ethic and integrity from him. I ask him for advice all the time because of how naturally his business instincts and wisdom come to him. He started working jobs at 13 years old, washing dishes at a cafeteria while riding a bike to work every day. He eventually got into the Marine Corps at 18 and then, after he got out, joined a roofing business where he was selling materials. It didn’t take long for my dad to become an entrepreneur with his new knowledge. He started his own roofing business in the late 1970s, which has inspired all of us Hopewell brothers since. With a 15-year age gap between my oldest brother and me, you can imagine that I grew up almost like an only child. I got to spend a lot of time with my father later into his career and when he retired. Of course, he was only “retired” for a few months before he and my mom decided to get home inspection licenses. Now they have their own business offering home inspections to anyone who asks. It’s more of a part-time job, but it certainly keeps him happy and not at all restless.

Although he is an incredibly hard worker, I’ve always loved that my father also takes time for his

family. Maybe, by the time I was around, he had grown into his career

and had more flexibility to do that — but he certainly didn’t have to make time for us. Yet, he

did. And whenever there was a big hailstorm, and people needed urgent help because their roof was leaking, I started going out to help my dad with roofing when I was about 10 years old. By spending time with him, he taught me how to work and how to be honest about what you’re doing. In many ways, I’ve followed his footsteps in life. He’s a veteran of the Marine Corp, as am I. To say I look up to my dad is an understatement. He’s a good, tough man with a very loving, sentimental side to him. I’ll always deeply appreciate that about him, and I’m certain his granddaughter will, too. To Dad: Thank you so much for everything you do for me, my brothers, and my sister. I feel so lucky you’ll always have my back, both figuratively and literally. It means the world to me.

Thank you for reading, everyone, and have a very happy Father’s Day!

Worried about your home’s mosquito problem? Give us a call today and “delete” mosquitoes from your future summer memories!

Mosquitoes aren’t just an annoying symptom to Texas summers — they can be dangerous. When they bite, there's a possibility they'll transmit diseases during their feeding. Some common illnesses experienced in the United States are West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, and dengue. To make matters worse, none of these diseases has standardized treatment, because each one has a wide range of symptoms and reactions. With mosquitoes' potential to be deadly, it's important you get mosquito control services that are effective and quick. That's why we've honed our process to perfection, so you can rest assured you're getting exactly what you need. OUR MOSQUITO TREATMENT To start, our service professionals perform an inspection, identifying any trouble areas with standing water and any areas of concern like poor drainage, overhanging trees, water-filled planters, and other similar signs. Once the inspection is complete, we'll treat the entire landscape while focusing on trees, shrubs, and leaves with a backpack fogger. In addition, we'll treat shaded

C hildren famously adore sweets, but what happens when those sweets are exclusively candy instead of fruits, too? Studies show that people learn when, what, and how to eat during the early years of their childhood. That’s why it’s so important to teach them the importance of healthy eating from the start. Since June is National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month, we thought we’d bring along a few tricks to improve your diet-mentoring tactics! No. 1: Always provide fruits and vegetables as snacks. Keep fruits washed, cut up, and in plain sight in the refrigerator. If you leave them out in the open, put a glass or plastic cover over them so bugs don’t bother them. STRUGGLING TO GET YOUR KIDS TO EAT GREEN? 5 Tricks to Improve Your Family’s Diet

No. 2: Serve salads as often as possible. Being a

parent keeps you busy, but there’s plenty of delicious,

prewashed, bagged salad at the grocery store that’s very easy to serve. They’ll even include unique salad ingredients that’d be more time-consuming for you to prepare on your own.

This protein-packed recipe is the perfect dinner for two on a hot summer night when you don’t want to turn on the oven. EASY TUNA POKE BOWL

No. 3: Include more vegetarian meals during the week. When you cut out meat, you’re more likely

to rely on mushrooms, spinach, eggplant, or other vegetables to make your meals satisfying. Give vegetarian spaghetti, enchiladas, stir fries, curries, and other foods a try!

INGREDIENTS

• • • • • •

2 tsp soy sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 2 tbsp orange juice

1 cup rice, cooked and cooled 1/4 cup avocado, cubed 4 cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 tbsp sesame seeds

• •

1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced 10 oz canned tuna, drained 2 tbsp cilantro leaves, chopped 1 scallion, finely chopped

No. 4: Make sure you pick foods rich in vitamin A and C. Vitamin A supports your eye health and immune system and reduces the risk of acne! It’s best found in spinach,

broccoli, winter squash, greens, or carrots. Experts say that vitamin C is one of the most effective vitamins, protecting our immune system, heart health, and possibly even skin wrinkling. You’ll find lots of vitamin C in oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, melon, tomato, and broccoli. No. 5: Eat healthy yourself! Kids learn the most by watching — and they watch you the most. If you’re eating healthy, your kids will eventually realize just how beneficial it is as you reap the benefits yourself.

1. First, make the dressing. In a jar, add soy sauce, sesame oil, orange juice, and ginger. Secure the lid and shake until emulsified. 2. In a small bowl, empty the drained tuna and pour the dressing over top. Add the cilantro and scallions and stir until well coated. 3. Divide rice between two serving bowls. Top with the dressed tuna, avocado, tomatoes, and sesame seeds.

We hope these tips helped you out! Let us know your favorite tactics for teaching your kids to eat healthier!

EXPLORE A NATIONAL FOREST FOR FREE On National Get Outdoors Day

Many people in the U.S. and across the world have a national park trip on their travel

While parking and day-use fees to access national forests tend to be relatively modest, fee-free days open up the opportunity to all visitors. The U.S. Forest Service has a great interactive map tool that prospective park- goers can use to learn more about the forests in their area, amenities and activities, and accessibility. Visit FS.fed.us/ivm to access the map and see what’s near your hometown!

bucket list. While Zion, Yellowstone, and the Great Smoky Mountains are all awesome locales, outdoor enthusiasts often overlook a resource that is less busy, less expensive, and usually right in their backyard: national forests.

If you’re dreaming up travel plans beyond your state’s border, consider visiting these notable U.S. national forests.

• El Yunque National Forest: Located in Puerto Rico, El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States.

• Tongass National Forest: Spanning 16.7 acres and several islands across Southeast Alaska, the Tongass is the country’s largest national forest.

All but 10 states have a national forest (or more than one!), so if your home state doesn’t have one, it’s very likely a neighboring state does! And there’s no better time to hike, bike, forage for mushrooms or berries, or camp at a nearby national forest than this month. The tree-filled landscape will provide shade and help you beat the summer heat, and to further incentivize visitors, the U.S. Forest Service (the organization that oversees the national forests) is offering a fee-free day on Saturday, June 12, in honor of National Get Outdoors Day!

• Salmon-Challis National Forest: This Idaho forest is the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48 and contains the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. • Cibola National Forest and Grassland: Spread across north-central New Mexico, west Texas, and Oklahoma, this forest and grassland area is notable for its diverse ecosystems and wildlife. The Sky Islands portion of the park is also home to over 200 rare plant and animal species.
