1959 August 14—First organizational meeting held under leadership of league founder Lamar Hunt. Aug. 15—AFL announced with six member clubs: Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul. August 22— American Football League chosen as official name. November 22-23—First draft meeting held, with first selections composed of: Boston—Gerhard Schwedes; Buffalo—Richie Lucas; Dallas—Don Meredith; Denver—Roger LeClerc; Houston—Billy Cannon; Los Angeles— Monty Stickles; Minneapolis— Dale Hackbart; New York—George Izo. The eight teams select a total of 264 players. November 23— Cooperative television plan adopted by AFL. November 30—Joe Foss named league commissioner. December 2—AFL completes first draft of collegiate players with an additional 161 draft choices. 1960 January 30—Oakland group awarded former Minneapolis-St.Paul franchise. February 8—Co-owner Y.C. “Chet” Soda named franchise’s first general manager. February 9—Eddie Erdelatz appointed as first head coach of Raiders. March 3-5—Allocation” draft formulated to stock Oakland club. March 20—“Name Your Football Team” contest kicks off. April 5—Franchise announces nickname “Senors.” April 14—Team announces nickname change to “Raiders.” May 16—Kezar Stadium announced as Raiders home stadium for 1960 season. June 9—AFL signs five-year contract with ABC for network televising of games. July 11—Raiders open first training camp at Santa Cruz High School. July 31—Raiders lose to Dallas Texans 20-13 in first-ever preseason game. September 11—Raiders open at home, losing to Houston, 37- 22, in first league game. December 6—AFL establishes Player Benefit Fund. December 17—Raiders complete inaugural season with a 48-10 win over the Denver Broncos. JULY 31, 1960, VS. DALLAS TEXANS

1963 Jan. 19—Al Davis named head coach and general manager of Raiders. Feb. 8—Dallas Texans announce move of franchise to Kansas City, becoming the Chiefs. March 28—New York Titans sold to group headed by David (Sonny) Werblin; club becomes the Jets. May 11—AFL allows Oakland and New York to select players from other franchises to provide more competitive balance. Dec. 22—Raiders down Houston, 52-49, to finish one game out of playoffs with 10-4-0 record, first winning season in club history. Dec. 28 —Halfback Clem Daniels named MVP by The Sporting News after leading the league in rushing with a then-record 1,099 yards. 1964 Jan. 17—AFL owners vote to recognize AFL Players’ Association, formed just three days earlier. Jan. 29—AFL and NBC sign five-year, $36-million television contract to begin with 1965 season. June 1— AFL announces establishment of pension and hospitalization plans. Nov. 28 —1965 AFL Draft held , Raiders select Memphis State tackle Harry Schuh in the first round and Florida State WR Fred Biletnikoff in the second. 1965 Feb. 1—Construction starts on 54,000-seat Oakland Coliseum; completion date set for Aug. 25, 1966. Aug. 16—AFL awards expansion franchise for 1966 to Miami. Nov. 27 —1966 AFL Draft held, Raiders select Kentucky defensive back Rodger Bird in the first round. 1966 April 8—Al Davis, general manager and head coach of Raiders, named second Commissioner of American Football League, succeeding Joe Foss. John Rauch hired as Raiders head coach. June 8—American Football League and National Football League agree to an alliance that includes common draft and championship game. July 25—Al Davis resigns as league commissioner. Milt Woodard appointed president of the American Football League. Davis rejoins Raiders as managing general partner. Sept. 18—Raiders open 54,000- seat Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, against Kansas City Chiefs. 1967 Jan. 15—First World Championship Game played, at Los Angeles. NFL champion Green Bay Packers pull away from AFL champion Kansas City in second half to win, 35-10. Jan. 21—AFL All-Star Game held in Oakland. East posts first series win, 30-23. March 14-15—First AFL-NFL common draft held, Raiders select Texas A&I guard Gene Upshaw in the first round. May 24—Cincinnati awarded AFL expansion franchise. August-September—First preseason games between AFL and NFL held, including Sept. 3 meeting between Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. Dec. 24—Raiders finish season with 13-1 mark, best record in AFL history. Dec. 31—Raiders rout Houston, 40- 7, to win AFL Championship. QB Daryle Lamonica named AFL MVP. 1968 Jan. 14—In Super Bowl II, Green Bay pulls away from AFL champion Raiders to win, 33-14. Jan. 30-31—Second AFL-NFL common Draft held, Raiders select Tennessee State QB Eldridge Dickey in the first round and Alabama quarterback Ken Stabler in the second. Nov. 17—”Heidi” becomes part of sports vocabulary when final minutes of Raiders’ 43-32 comeback win over New York are cut off to permit television special to begin on time. Viewers unaware that Raiders score two late touchdowns to win, then voice headline- grabbing displeasure at NBC. Dec. 22—Raiders wallop visiting Kansas City, 41-6, to capture Western Division Playoff. Dec. 29—Raiders fall to New York Jets, 27-23, in AFL Championship at Shea Stadium before 62,627.

1961 Jan. 1—First AFL Championship game held, Houston defeats Los Angeles, 24-16, before 32,183. Jan. 17—E.W. McGah named president of Raiders as partnership reorganized. June 24—First call for audtions for the Raiderettes appears in the Oakland Tribune. Sept.18 —Eddie Erdelatz fired, Marty Feldman promoted to head coach. 1962 Jan. 7—First AFL All-Star Game held, West defeats East, 47-27, before 20,973 at San Diego. June 27—Special draft of veteran players established to assist Oakland and Denver. Sept.9 —Raiders make Frank Youell Field debut in Oakland, fall to New York Titans, 28-17. Oct. 16 —Marty Feldman fired, Rod Conkright named head coach.
