DEFENSIVE ASSISTANT, PASS RUSH SPECIALIST 4TH SEASON IN NFL • 1ST SEASON WITH RAIDERS MATT EDWARDS

Edwards served as special teams coordinator and defensive line coach at Florida Atlantic University in 2013. In 2011, Edwards returned to his alma mater at Miami (Ohio) and served as the defensive ends coach before adding the responsibility of special teams coordinator and linebackers coach in 2012. After starting his coaching career in 2003 as the linebackers coach at the College of Wooster, Edwards spent the next seven seasons working at Kent State, beginning as a graduate assistant (2004-05) before being promoted to defensive line coach (2006-10). PERSONAL: A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Edwards played collegiately at Miami (Ohio), where he played as a linebacker and defensive end and was named a team captain during his senior season…He earned his bachelor’s degree in sport organization in 2002 and completed his master’s degree in sport and recreational management from Kent State University…He and his wife, Mary, have four sons: Andrew, Luke, Nathan and William. Matt Edwards enters his first season as defensive assistant/pass rush specialist for the Raiders in 2022. Edwards joins the Silver and Black having spent the previous four years with the Tennessee Titans, holding multiple positions during his tenure. In 2021, Edwards returned to assistant special teams coach after holding the title for each of his first two seasons (2018-19) with the Titans. Edwards helped coach K Randy Bullock, who finished ninth in franchise history with 120 points in a single season, while P Brett Kern had the league’s third best ratio of punts inside the 20 to touchbacks (18:1). WR/RS Chester Rogers ranked fifth in the NFL with a 9.8-yard punt return average, the best by a Titans player since 2012, and the kickoff coverage unit ranked eighth in the league (20.3-yard average). In 2020, he served as the defensive assistant for a unit that ranked seventh in the NFL with 23 takeaways, which tied for the most by a Titans’ defense since 2013. Edwards also helped coach the defense to tally 15 interceptions, which ranked seventh in the NFL and was the most by the Titans since 2012. In 2019, Edwards served as the assistant special teams coach for a unit that tied New England for the league lead with four total blocked kicks and punts. He also helped coach Kern to his third consecutive Pro Bowl after leading the NFL with 37 punts placed inside the 20-yard line and recording a 43.1-yard net average on punts, ranking second in team history. In 2018, the Titans set a new NFL record by averaging 32 yards per kickoff return. Edwards helped coach WR/RS Darius Jennings as he set a franchise record with a 31.7-yard kickoff return average. He also saw Kern set a team record with 39 punts inside the 20-yard line. Prior to the NFL, Edwards spent 15 seasons coaching collegiately. From 2014-17, he served as the defensive coordinator for Tiffin University. He helped Tiffin to consecutive winning seasons in his final two years. In 2017, the Dragons led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in sacks and tackles for loss.
