DEFENSIVE LINE 7TH SEASON IN NFL (4 AS A PLAYER) • 1ST SEASON WITH RAIDERS FRANK OKAM
Frank Okam enters his first season as defensive line coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after spending the past two seasons (2020-21) with the Carolina Panthers. Okam was promoted to Carolina’s defensive line coach in 2021 after one season as the assistant defensive line coach. In 2021, Okam’s unit contributed to a defense that ranked second in the NFL in yards allowed per game (305.9), a 16-spot improvement from the prior year. Under his guidance, the Panthers recorded 39 sacks, tied for 15th in the league and an eight-spot improvement from 2020. Okam saw DE Brian Burns named a Pro Bowl starter and tie his career-high for sacks in a season with nine. Burns led the team and tied for fifth in the NFC in tackles for loss. In 2020, Okam helped mentor rookie DT Derrick Brown, who garnered PFWA All-Rookie honors as he posted two sacks and eight tackles for loss, ranking third among all rookies. Under the guidance of Okam, DE Efe Obada posted a career high with 5.5 sacks and DE Brian Burns led the Panthers with 9.0 sacks while ranking second among all NFL DEs with 58 tackles. Before entering the NFL coaching ranks, Okam worked as the defensive line coach at Baylor from 2018-19. During the 2019 season, Okam helped the Bears produce 46 sacks to finish the year ranked ninth in the nation. Okam saw DT James Lynch earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year after recording a school-record 13.5 sacks, ranking fifth in the nation. Okam also helped DE James Lockhart and DT Bravvion Roy combine for 11.5 sacks. In his first season at Baylor, Okam coached Lynch to second team All-Big 12 honors and DE Greg Roberts to honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. Prior to his time at Baylor, Okam spent four years at Rice University working with the defensive line from 2014-17. After working as a graduate assistant during his first two years with the Owls, Okam was promoted to defensive line coach. Under Okam’s leadership in 2017, Rice DE Brian Womac was named a first team all-conference selection after setting the school record with 22 tackles for loss and leading Conference USA in tackles for loss and sacks (10). Additionally, DT Roe Wilkins was honorable mention All-Conference USA after posting 6.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Okam was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, where he played for three seasons from 2008-10. He also saw time with Seattle (2010), Tampa Bay (2010-12) and finished his career with the New York Giants in 2013. A four-year letterman at defensive tackle for the University of Texas from 2004-07, Okam was a freshman All-American in 2004 and a two-time All-Big 12 honoree. In 2005, he helped Texas win both the Big 12 and BCS National Championships. Okam graduated from the University of Texas in 2007 with a degree in sport management before earning a master’s degree in liberal studies from Rice University in 2017.
