Y8 Bulletin 12.07.24

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

As this is our final bulletin for the year, I wanted to reflect on some highlights with Year 8. We’ve seen incredible sports results in netball, football, rugby, athletics, swimming, rounders, and ultimate frisbee. On Monday, I watched the Year 8s in an official ultimate frisbee game and was impressed by their efforts to implement the tactics they’ve been practising with Mr Reynolds. Also in Y8 we should celebrate all the clubs that students have been involved in. I know that we have had students in clubs based around art, PE, drama, mindfulness, social communication, music (choir and band), EDI, politics, journalism, literature, mathematics, science, poetry and photography. I know there are probably a range of others I have missed! Well done to so many of the students that have taken part in these clubs throughout the year. These are always a great opportunity for students to make new connections with others as well as pursue an interest. I encourage all Y8s to join a club! Throughout the year I have had great joy in watching the students throughout their DT carousel. The students have had a range of practical subjects that they have rotated through. I have tasted many beef/lamb kebabs, viewed the careful stitchwork of comfort cushions, heard the loud sawing of a jewellery box and been amazed at the creative lid designs. All the work the students have done throughout the year has been incredible. It has been warming and encouraging to see many students flourish in different classroom environments. It is also worth noting that I was able to see a number of students with their mask creations. I know the art team has worked hard to have the students design their ‘jungle themed’ masks. This could not be a final bulletin without mentioning some of the brilliant trips the Y8s have been involved in. I was so very impressed by Y8 behaviour when all students attended the Rose Theatre on their drama trip. The students learned much from the acting, writing and set design of a real play. It was an incredible event that I am sure all students remember well. I also would like to mention the RE trip, where students attended the Buddhist temple in Wimbledon. Students got the opportunity to build on their own knowledge of buddhism as we had a number of speakers remind the students of some of the key points of the religion. The grounds and facilities made all of the students feel some peace, and I must admit I left the temple feeling far more relaxed than when I entered. Lastly, I must share that I will be leaving Waldegrave and handing back my duties to Mrs Mortimer, who is keen to continue working with Year 8. My partner and I are moving to Australia for a new adventure. It was a difficult decision as I have absolutely loved my time at Waldegrave over the past four years. I will miss the brilliance and humour of the Year 8s and being their Head of Year has been a joy. I know they will excel in whatever paths they choose. I want to take this final opportunity to thank all the parents for their support. I have appreciated our conversations, and although it is not always easy, we all strive to guide, nurture, and teach the students here at Waldegrave. Thank you and have a wonderful summer break.
