Anthropology: or, The Doctrine of Man (Continued from page 463)

The Frailty o f the Body » There 1 b one passage of Scripture which is often mis quoted, and that is, "He knoweth our frame; He remem- bereth that we are dust" (Psa. 103:14). The misquotation is caused by inserting a "but," and making the passage read, "We are but dust." We are more than dust, although we are dust, since the body is from the ground. The ele ments which form the human body are common in the atmosphere and soil. The three commonest gases, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, with carbon, and with sulphur, are the foundation stones. In Blightly different proportions, these elements constitute the primordial combinations of matter, whichrts the abode of life. In the finished structure there appear, besides, lime, potash, and a little iron, sodium and phosphorus. These are the constituents of the human body— of these in different combinations— and, so far as we know, nothing else. Some young men visiting the National Museum in Wash ington, D. C., passed a cabinet, on which were the words, "The body of a man weighing 354 lbs." "Where is the man?" one of them asked. But nearby was another cabinet containing heterogeneous articles,— Jars containing different kinds of fat, phosphates, lime, car bonate of lime, a few ounces of sugar, calcium, sodium, and other chemicals. Another section held a row of clear glass Jars filled with gases, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen. There was a square lump of coal, and more bottles separately labelled, phosphorus, calcium, magnesia, potassium. In a Jar was a fraction of an ounce of iron, and.nearby was a lump of ill-smelling brimstone. The materials in these cab inets contain the disintegrated elements that would go to make up a man: but it was not a man! Here is a problem for a scientist. Let him get the above elements and put them together (if he can); then create the spirit, and then unite the spirit with the formed body, by means of the soul in-breathed. Considering the above, we can quite understand hoyr frail is the body, for let disease attack any part of it and at once the whole is affected; and let any .vital part break down, then dissolution ensues. The consequence is, the spirit goes out of the body, the soul-ish life goes out, and the body returns to its original state. Tet how wonderful is the combination, and how true are the quoted words of the Spirit in reminding us, that in God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). The “ dustology" (to coin a word) of man’s bodily nature is apprehended in the use of the Hebrew word rendered "dust” in Psalm 103:14; Gen. 2 :7 ; 3:19. The word is translated as follows: "Mortar” in Leviticus 14:42— "The mortar of the house." “ Ashes” in Numbers 19:27— "Ashes of the heifer.” “ Rubbish" in Nehemiah 9:2— “ Heaps of the rubbish.” “ Powder" in 2 Kings 23:6— "Stamped it . . . to powder.” “Ground” in Job 14:8— “ Die in the ground." “ Earth” in Job 19:25— "Upon the earth.” The dust from which the body is formed is the emblem of nothingness, as Abraham confessed he was “ dust and ashes" in the sight of the Lord (Gen. 18:27).- It is associated with defilement; hence, Zion is exhorted to shake herself from the dust (Isa. 6 2 :2 ) . It is connected with humiliation, as Job acknowledged when he said he repented "in dust and ashes” (Job 4 2 :6 ) . It is the outward symbol of the mourn-
