D id you know that more than 300 million tons of plastic trash is generated every year, but less than 8 percent of that waste is recycled. The fact is, as much as 12 million tons end up in the ocean. A new U.S. based startup, ByFusion, has the solution for tackling the growing problem of ocean plastic: turn it into new construction material. The concept is actually pretty simple. Plastic trash collected from the ocean gets compressed into sturdy, con- struction-quality bricks called RePlast

using ByFusion’s patented process.

modular technology platform is, unlike conventional recycling pro- cesses, the RePlast process works for any and all types of plastic without sorting or washing so there is no additional cost for sorting or cleaning the materials, so it is not only an envi- ronmental friendly process, but also a cost effective one as well. Our world is drowning in plastic waste and we are passionately committed to finding a solution and ByFusion is committed to cleaning it up one brick at a time.

It sounds straightforward, but the details of the process are where things get interesting. The compressing equipment is small, mobile enough to fit inside of a shipping container, the process is almost entirely carbon neutral, and the density and shape of the blocks is customizable making it adaptable for many different construction projects.
