that the Aramaic language is also one of dark beings. The name of the demon Tobarabau, which is usually evoked when it comes to love magic, but is also linked to acts of rebirth and res- urrection, sheds a slightly diabol- ical light on this find. The assumption is that it is an amulet that was supposed to protect the deceased from the evil eye, evil forces, deeds and other dark phenomenon, for life becomes senseless when one considers that the object was found as a grave article. On the other hand, the belief of ancient man that the spirits of those who met a violent death, especial- ly the innocent souls of children and young people, were the most reliable carriers of messages to living gods and demons, sug- gests one of the possible direc- tions in which to find the purpose of the tiles from Viminacium. A bronze capsule with a coil of silver and containing anoth- er of gold, found in the woman’s grave, is even more enigmatic. - Both tiles are engraved ex- clusively with symbols. We as- sume that these are ancient as- trological symbols that could, among Christians, represent an- gels and other heavenly powers – explains Dr Korać. And while experts confront the huge challenge of interpret- ing the Viminacium tiles of pre- cious metals, there is no doubt about one thing – this large Ro- man city on the territory of to- day’s Serbia had its own experts in magical engravings and witch- craft of every kind! Judging by the contents of the recently dis- covered tiles, these were per- sonalities who undoubtedly had knowledge that was terrifying for their contemporaries. Traces of their practices and the need for their services reveal a whole new dimension to Viminacium, a city that never ceases to surprise re- searchers.
