FL Student Handbook 2024-25

6. Students will be alerted by the academic office, as a curtesy, when they have missed 12 & 18 hours of class. When a student reaches the limit of 24 missed class periods, it prompts the following: 1. A grade reduction of 1% for each additional (beyond 24) missed class period in the affected course. This grade reduction simply reflects the fact that the student is not meeting the academic requirements of the program as it relates to class attendance. 2. A review of the student’s health condition to determine if they are well enough to remain enrolled in a higher ed program requiring physical class attendance. Students who reach the limit must therefore present an “Appeal for Continuation” to the Academic Office. The purpose of the appeal is not to strike missed class hours from the record or to justify additional missed classes due to illness (although in rare cases it may do so). Rather, it is to justify a student’s continuation in the program by showing that they are taking their health challenges seriously and making every effort to address them. 3. For this reason, the appeal must include a description of the specific health condition(s) which caused the recurring absences and clear evidence that medical help has been sought which will make it possible for them to immediately and significantly improve their class attendance. This can include evidence of visits to the Health Center (NY campus only), doctor’s appointments, or evidence that the student has contacted Telemedicine, the online medical consultation service available at no cost to all enrolled students on the (Sam by UCM) app, online at www.unitedconciergemedicine.com, or by calling 844-484-7362. 4. Failure to successfully make this appeal can result in a discontinuation of a student’s enrollment at the Bible Institute. 5. In the case of students who have signed a FERPA release form, parents are informed when the student has missed 18 and 24 class hours. B. Classroom 1. Cell phones, headphones, and earbuds must be put away entirely during class lectures. Laptops and tablets are to be used only for classroom-related tasks. 2. Beverages are permitted in the classroom only if they are in a closed lid container. 3. No food or chewing gum is permitted inside the Theis Assembly Center . Cough drops, breath mints, and small hard candies (not on a stick) are permitted during class. C. Attention All students are expected to pay attention in class. The instructor, not the bell, ends the class period. It is disrespectful to close notebooks/computers and pack up before the instructor dismisses the class. Students should not visit the restroom during the lecture or exam period. D. Cheating Integrity is a key characteristic in the life of a Christian. Confessed cheating will result in a zero for the test or assignment. Students caught cheating may be dismissed. Students are not permitted to use previous tests from former students as study aids. Students should not give hints to those who still have make-up work to be completed. All tests are the property of the Word of Life Bible Institute. E. Plagiarism Plagiarism is defined as the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work. Plagiarism is not clearly distinguishing between your words and the words of someone else. Plagiarism is considered cheating, lying, and stealing. Note that there are 3 types of plagiarism: 1. Intentional Plagiarism includes submitting a work found online, copying portions of a written work, and “borrowing” papers from other students. 2. Unintentional Plagiarism includes lack of knowledge regarding source use, misunderstanding of citation rules, and careless note taking. 3. Self-Recycling includes recycling your own writing for another assignment. Please be advised that the Bible Institute utilizes a plagiarism detection software (Turnitin) that reviews every submitted assignment. The consequence for participating in any of these types of plagiarism may include receiving a zero for the assignment, being put on a discipline contract, and/or dismissal from Word of Life Bible Institute. F. AI Policy Integrity and honesty are key biblical and theological concepts that must be applied to all areas of life and ministry including academic study. While AI tools can be beneficial for idea exploration, students must author and create all work themselves. Critical thinking, personal understanding, and implementing effective research and writing techniques are Program Learning Outcomes that cannot be achieved through the use of AI. No submitted coursework should be created by someone or something else. Inappropriate use of AI tools is in direct opposition to our plagiarism policy. The determination of what constitutes inappropriate use of AI is at the discretion of the professors and Academic Staff.
