Foundations for Healthcare Careers This course introduces students to important health- care concepts and professional career development skills to prepare them for working in a healthcare setting. Students are introduced to medical termi- nology, the current healthcare system structure and essential concepts such as HIPAA, documentation and medical records, patient rights, cultural competency, workplace professionalism, healthcare ethics and legal responsibilities, environmental safety, infection control, and medical terminology. Communication skills are practiced with a special focus on customer service and interpersonal communication concepts. Students will also gain professional development skills in successful resume and application writing, inter- viewing, and gaining and maintaining employment. This is a prerequisite course for CNA, Phlebotomy, and Medical Assistant.

Clinical Medical Assistant I Clinical Medical Assistant I is the first of a four-part series for students wanting to take the NHA certifi- cation exam to become a Certified Medical Assistant. The student will learn basic patient skills, the role as a member of the health care team, disease processes, cultural diversity, infection control and safety issues through lecture, discussion, and hands-on practice. This course provides the medical assistant student with the clinical theory and skills that are utilized in a medical practice. Emphasis is placed on patient examinations, patient care and education, assistance with rehabilitative treatments and modalities, medical and surgical asepsis, and wound care. Review of basic pharmacology, including oral and parenteral drug ad- ministrations is also provided.
