Word bank
Fish use their ... to swim.
Birds use their ... to fly.
A snake has ..., but a fox has ...
6. frog
You will learn about:
• vertebrates and their characteristics • fish, amphibians and reptiles • birds and mammals

3 Name that vertebrate!
Characteristics of vertebrates
A vertebrate has a backbone . This is a column of bones called vertebrae . Dogs, parrots, frogs, snakes and sharks are vertebrates. You are a vertebrate, too. Most vertebrates have:
a head
a body covered in skin with scales, feathers, fur or hair
a tail
limbs , such as arms, legs, wings or fins
There are five groups of vertebrates.
Fish
Amphibians
Reptiles
Birds
Mammals
4
All vertebrates need food, reproduce and interact with the world around them.
Nutrition
Carnivores eat other animals.
Herbivores eat plants.
Omnivores eat animals and plants.
wolf
kangaroo
hen
Reproduction
Oviparous animals lay eggs.
Viviparous animals give birth to live young.
Ovoviviparous animals carry eggs inside their body.
tortoise
dog
shark
Interaction
Vertebrates see, hear, smell, taste and touch the world around them.
Birds migrate together to protect each other.
Male frogs croak to attract female frogs.
DESCRIBE the parts of a vertebrate.
GIVE one example of each: omnivore, carnivore, herbivore. SAY what they eat.
1
3
EXPLAIN the difference between an oviparous and a viviparous animal.
2
IDENTIFY how humans are born.

3 Name that vertebrate!
Fish, amphibians and reptiles
Fish, amphibians and reptiles are cold-blooded animals . They need the heat of the sun to keep warm.
Fish and their characteristics • Fish live in water. • Most fish are oviparous and lay eggs in the water. • They breathe through gills .
fins to swim
body covered in scales
gills
Amphibians and their characteristics Amphibians become adults through a process called metamorphosis :
1
2
Frogs are oviparous animals. They lay eggs in water.
Tadpoles (baby amphibians) live in water. They breathe through gills .
4
Adult frogs live on land and in water. They breathe through moist skin and lungs .
3
Tadpoles change into froglets (young frogs). They have two front legs.
6
Reptiles and their characteristics • Reptiles live on land or in water. • Most are oviparous and lay eggs on land. • They breathe with lungs .
tail
dry, scaly skin
head
four short limbs
Most reptiles have four limbs. Some have a shell.
Lizards are reptiles with four limbs and a tail.
Snakes are reptiles without limbs.
Tortoises are reptiles with a hard shell on the outside.
NAME vertebrates with gills.
GIVE an example of a reptile with a hard shell.
1
5
EXPLAIN the differences between a frog and a tadpole.
2
NAME the vertebrate groups with scales.
6
Where do fish, amphibians and reptiles live? EXPLAIN . EXPLAIN the differences between the body of a reptile and the body of a fish.
3
Some reptiles have legs and some don’t. NAME one with legs and one without.

3 Name that vertebrate!
Birds and mammals
Birds and mammals are warm-blooded animals . They make their own body heat.
Birds and their characteristics • Birds are oviparous . • They breathe with lungs .
hard beak
body covered in feathers
two wings
two legs
tail
Most birds can fly, but some walk or swim.
Eagles fly.
Ostriches cannot fly, but they run fast.
Penguins cannot fly, but they are great swimmers.
SAY the body parts of birds.
1
GIVE examples of birds that cannot fly.
2
IDENTIFY the limbs of birds. EXPLAIN how they help them move.
3
8
Mammals and their characteristics • Mammals have four limbs . These can be legs, arms or flippers, depending on the animal. Monkeys have arms. Dolphins have flippers. • Most mammals are viviparous . They feed their babies with milk . • They breathe with lungs .
horns
skin covered in fur or hair
four legs
Bats are the only flying mammals.
Dolphins are aquatic mammals.
Zebras are terrestrial mammals.
EXPLAIN why mammals are warm-blooded animals.
4
How do mammals breathe? SAY .
