ma Fik, Amerikanka iz Luizijane, došla je u Srbiju da predaje engleski, a napustila ju je kao putujući kul- turni ilustrator. Naša ćud, naš način života i naši obi- čaji toliko su pomerili 25-godišnju devojku da je pro- menila životni poziv. U Emi se probudila želja da ilustruje sve što doživi. Tako su nastali crteži koji prikazu- ju srpske običaje iz različitih krajeva. Često se bavila našom hranom. Crtala je proces nastajanja sarme, pečenih paprika, ajvara… U Americi je diplomirala englesku književnost i istori- ju umetnosti, a u Srbiju je došla kao Fulbrajtov stipendista da predaje engleski. Prvo je živela devet meseci u Novom Pazaru. Kroz našu zemlju uvek je putovala javnim prevozom jer je znala da će tako biti na izvoru mnogih „nacionalnih podata- ka“. I bila je. Jednom je do Negotina putovala deset sati. – Autobus se pokvario, radovi na putu... Ali dešavalo se i mnogo divnih stvari. Na primer, jednom sam ušla u pogrešan autobus, vozač je zaustavio kolegu iz suprotnog smera i za- molio ga da mi pomogne. I to sve besplatno. Za godinu i po, koliko je boravila u našoj zemlji, Ema je nacrtala više od 300 crteža. – Srbi su tako srdačni i otvoreni prema strancima, zbog čega je moje istraživanje teklo lako. Dešavale su mi se nevero- vatne stvari. Na primer, na pijaci upoznam devojku, a ona mi kaže: „Moja baka živi blizu, ajmo na ručak.“ Tako da sve što je trebalo da uradim za moje istraživanje jeste da kažem – da. Ema upravo završava drugu knjigu Snippets of New Or- leans koja će biti u prodaji od aprila sledeće godine. Our temperament, our way of life and our customs so moved this 25-year-old that she changed her life’s calling. In Emma awoke a desire to illustrate everything she expe- riences. Thus emerged her sketches depicting Serbian cus- toms from different regions. She often works with our food. She has drawn the process of making sarma cabbage rolls, baked peppers, ajvar pepper chutney and many more deli- cacies. In America, she graduated in English literature and art history, and she came to Serbia as a Fulbright scholar to teach English. First she spent nine months living in Novi Pazar. She always travelled throughout our country by public transport, because she knew that in that way she would ex- perience the real nation. And she did. She once travelled ten hours to Negotin. - The bus broke down, there were road works ... But a lot of wonderful things also happened. For example, during the journey I once boarded the wrong bus and the driver stopped a colleague travelling in the opposite direction and asked him to help me. And all free of charge. In the year and a half that she spent in our country, Em- ma drew more than 300 sketches. - Serbs are so friendly and open to foreigners, which is why my research flowed easily. Unbelievable things hap- pened to me. For example, I met a girl at the market and she said: “My grandmother lives nearby, let’s go for lunch”. So, all I had to do for my research was to say - yes. Emma is just completing her second book, “Snippets of New Orleans”, which will hit bookshelves in April 2017. All of her illustrations can be seen on the site www.emmafick.com
