Wake Forest Comprehensive Transportation Plan - Dec. 2021

WAKE FOREST COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPORTATION PLAN

Roadway Cross-Sections The following pages display the standardized roadway cross-sections that have been developed for the Wake Forest Comprehensive Transportation Plan. Dimensions provided with the cross-sections are based on element dimensions in the NCDOT Typical Cross Sections. For guidance for determining roadway requirements, refer to the list of roadways by classifications. Existing roadways not listed should at a minimum follow the 2A Two Undivided Cross-Section. New roadways not identified in the Future Roadway Network as part of the new development shall be determined by Town staff and the developer. The preferred details for each corridor should maximize the existing and proposed street network and bike and pedestrian networks. Using the Cross-Sections Each cross-section has standard and alternate dimensions. This allows Town staff the right to modify cross-sections as needed based on existing conditions or needs to the transportation network. Right of Way The proposed minimum right-of-way in the cross- sections in this document is the listed right-of-way if a roadway were to follow the standard dimensions for cross-section elements. The Town reserves the right to increase or decrease the minimum right-of- way required at the time of development from the listed right-of-way based on existing conditions or to accommodate alternate dimensions–the suggested right-of-way does not account for any required bike or pedestrian infrastructure beyond the standard sidewalk, or any alternate cross-section elements.

Travel Lanes Standard dimensions for travel lanes are preferred by the Town. Narrower dimensions are only allowed if approved by Town staff. Existing wider lanes are allowed to remain. Bike and Pedestrian Infrastructure If Future Multi-Use Path Network Map or Future Bike Network Map indicate required improvements, roadways must use the alternate dimensions to meet the requirement. Town Staff reserves the right to require additional bike and pedestrian improvements on roadways not identified on the Future Multi-Use Path Network Map or Future Bicycle Network Map. Sidewalks are standard for any new roadway and when improving existing roadways. Existing roadways in historically sensitive areas such as the Mill Village Overlay and Wake Forest Historic Districts areas may be evaluated at the time of development to determine if new sidewalks are appropriate. Curb and Gutter Curb and gutter is standard for any new roadway and when improving existing roadways. Existing roadways in historically sensitive areas such as the Mill Village and Wake Forest Historic Districts may be evaluated at the time of development to determine if curb and gutter is appropriate. NCDOT Approval Roads located along state-maintained roadways are subject to approval of NCDOT. NCDOT may require additional cross-section elements or right-of-way beyond the Town’s minimum standards.
