Celebrating Aged Care Employee Day - 7 August Each year on Aged Care Employee Day, we pause to recognise and celebrate the thousands
of dedicated individuals who care for older Australians in aged care, retirement living, and seniors housing. From leadership teams to hands-on carers, and those working behind the scenes – including volunteers, cleaners, chefs, cooks, maintenance staff, and administrators – this day is all about saying thank you for the vital work you do. At Coorparoo Aged Care, we marked the occasion with a delicious selection of cakes and goodies for both morning and afternoon tea, and pizzas were shared across all shifts to ensure everyone could enjoy the celebration. Appreciation posters were also displayed throughout our home to spotlight the incredible efforts of our team. Our staff work tirelessly, often without recognition, to ensure the dignity, comfort, and wellbeing of our residents. Their care is not just professional – it's personal and selfless, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we support every single day. In July, we rolled out the red carpet to recognise and celebrate the vital role each of our aged care employees plays in enriching the lives of our residents. To every member of our team – thank you. Your dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment do not go unnoticed. Regards

Community Happenings Winter
Morning Wellness & Rooftop Views This winter, our rooftop was the perfect place to start the day. Residents enjoyed gentle exercise sessions followed by peaceful Anglican Church services, set against the calm winter skyline. As we bid farewell to the cooler months, we reflect on what has been a truly special winter at Coorparoo Aged Care. Despite the crisp mornings and shorter days, our community has been filled with warmth, laughter, and memorable moments that have brought residents, families, and staff closer together.
Fun, Fitness & Friendly Competition From energetic Zumba with Olga from BoogieCamp to a spirited Indoor Bowls match between the orange and blue teams, our community stayed active and engaged. A special moment was having our Facility Manager, Debbie, join the fun during bowls – a real crowd-pleaser!

Message from the Lifestyle Team
Winter has returned, and with it, the excitement of the Ekka in Brisbane! Our residents and staff were busy creating decorations for our annual Ekka Day celebration, which took place on
Tuesday, August 12. Much fun was had by all as we brought the spirit of the Ekka to our home, ensuring everyone could join in the festivities. The day was filled with classic Ekka treats like dagwood dogs, strawberry sundaes, and other goodies. Residents and staff enjoyed fun games and activities throughout the day. A big thank you to our amazing team who worked hard to make the event so enjoyable for everyone! Spiritual Support Church services and communion continue to be held every Sunday. When clergy are unavailable, staff organize Songs of Praise, followed by a relaxing morning tea. In addition, both Catholic Mass and an Anglican service are held monthly on the rooftop, and all are welcome to attend. Pamper Day In July, we hosted a spa day where residents were treated to soothing foot spas and massages. About a third of our residents joined in, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. It was a lovely, relaxing experience for all who attended. We remain committed to providing meaningful, inclusive activities for all residents. Our Lifestyle Team is always open to feedback and new ideas to ensure there’s something for everyone to enjoy each day.

Message from Clinical Nursing Team
It is once again a pleasure to share updates from our team in this quarterly newsletter. Over the past few months, we have experienced a significant turnover of residents. During this time, our
strong, stable, and dedicated nursing team has continued to provide exceptional support, guiding several individuals through the final stages of life with compassion and professionalism. We are incredibly proud of their unwavering commitment. We’ve received numerous letters of thanks and appreciation acknowledging the kindness, skill, and sensitivity our staff show in caring for residents. We are fortunate to have a highly skilled team, with many members trained in Palliative Care, ensuring the highest quality of support is available when it is most needed. Clinical Focus: Pain and Changed Behaviour in People Living with Dementia This quarter, we are focusing on pain management, particularly for those who may not be able to verbalize their discomfort. Pain is a common—yet often overlooked—cause of changed behaviour in people living with dementia. Because many residents cannot clearly communicate their pain, it is essential for staff to remain vigilant and regularly assess any new or unusual behaviours. Identifying and addressing pain early can significantly improve a resident's comfort and quality of life. Staff receive constant training of recognising the symptoms and providing treatment. We encourage residents and families to speak with our nursing team or doctors if you have any concerns about pain management. If you’ve noticed specific behaviours or triggers in the past, sharing these insights with our team can help us provide more tailored and effective care. 8
Meet the Team Dawa
I completed my Certificate III in Individual Support in September 2019 and was fortunate to begin working at Coorparoo Aged Care in December 2019, just six months after it opened.
Originally from Bhutan, I moved in 2018 and now call Brisbane home and enjoy raising my two children, aged 9 and 13, in this vibrant community. I find great purpose in my role, where I can offer companionship, provide care, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents. I truly enjoy the connections I’ve built and the friendships I’ve formed, both with residents and colleagues. In my spare time, I love relaxing with my family and friends. I also enjoy cooking, gardening, exercising, and exploring creative hobbies to recharge and stay balanced.
On the national flag of Bhutan, the Druk (white dragon) honours the thunder dragon, after which the country is named.
Over 70% of Bhutan is covered in forest, making it the only country in the world to be carbon negative!

Chef's Corner Karl
Our approach to food and dining is always flexible. Whether you prefer enjoying a quiet meal in the comfort of your room or meeting others in the dining room, the choice is always yours.
All our dining rooms are thoughtfully arranged to foster a healthy community and a sense of companionship. Our chef, Karl, regularly meets with residents and collaborates closely with our dietitians and speech pathologists to plan and offer a wide variety of meals. Resident input plays an invaluable role in shaping our menu. Recently, two of our monthly “Resident Choice” nights featured a French-inspired dinner and an Italian-themed meal, both of which were met with enthusiastic and positive feedback from everyone. Our 6th Birthday celebrations included a delightful high tea in the afternoon, well attended by residents who thoroughly enjoyed the day and the specially chosen food for the occasion. Additionally, our popular Fish and Chips Day, organized by the Lifestyle team on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, continues to be a favourite among those who attend, as are our enjoyable trips to the Village Café for lunch. Karl is always happy to speak with any resident or family member to explore ways we can further enhance the dining experience here at Coorparoo Aged Care.

Meet the Resident Greg Meet Greg – From Farm Boy to Lawyer, A Life Well Lived My name is Greg. I was born in Brisbane but spent my early years growing up on farms around Eumundi and Nambour. Those days left me with some of my fondest
childhood memories — time spent with my dogs and horses, and holidays by the sea at beautiful Mooloolaba. Life on the land taught me the value of hard work, connection to nature, and the joy of simple pleasures. Eventually, I returned to Brisbane to pursue my tertiary education. I studied at university and went on to practise law for around 45 years in this great city. It was a challenging but deeply rewarding career that shaped much of who I am today. Outside of work, I’ve always enjoyed gardening, exercise, radio and television, and socialising. I especially cherish the time I spend with my partner Annie and my family — they’re the heart of my life. One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received was to “follow your own dreams and enjoy everything you do — especially your work.” I’ve tried to live by that, and I truly believe that life is what you make of it. If you can find joy in the everyday and treat others with kindness, you’re on the right path.

About nine months ago, I moved into Coorparoo Aged Care, and I can’t thank in my lifetime. Technology and communication have advanced rapidly, and there’s been a growing acceptance of diversity. Immigration has made the world feel smaller and more connected, and I see that as a positive step forward. Meet the Resident Greg The world has changed a great deal
Debbie and her team enough. They’ve made me feel truly welcome and helped turn my little corner of the building into a home — a place where I feel comfortable and proud to welcome my family. I have always enjoyed exercise and continue to attend the facility exercise classes, something I credit with enhancing my strength and mobility. Looking back, I’d say my greatest achievements are my two wonderful sons, a worthwhile and fulfilling career, and the friendships I’ve built along the way. From a farm boy in Eumundi to a lawyer in Brisbane — it’s been quite a journey. And yes, I’d do it all again.
