M ODERN psychiatry and psy chology must reorient them selves with regard to Christ, harm may be inflicted upon society. We shall, therefore, consider seven insoluble problems in secular psy chology, and then consider the scrip tural solutions of each one of them. Is It Possible for Any of Us to Know Ourselves? The ancient pagan philosopher im plied an affirmative answer to this question when he said, “Know thy self.” Modern depth psychology would give us the impression that the psycho-analyst can fathom the depths of the personality, but that one cannot do so unaided. The Bible says that we have a "hidden part’’ of the inner man (personality) (Psa. 51:6), and this part, which is other wise called the heart, we cannot know. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9), The following verse shows us that only the Lord can search these deeper layers of personality (Jer. 17:10). Likewise, Jesus “knew what was in man” (John 2:25). How Con I Flee From Death? Every man tends to fear death and tries to avoid it. Of the secular solu tions there are none, and psychology can offer noth ing except: "You mustn’t think about such things. They are morbid,” While it is true that “it is appointed unto man once to die" (Heb. 9:27), at the same time the Scriptures present a way to cheat death of its spoil. In fact, this is the most important message of Scripture —the gospel of the grace of God. By accepting salvation through Christ, man may experience a new birth by which he may receive eternal life
as a free gift (John 3:7; Rom. 6:23). One must direct his attention to the. Lord Jesus: "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth" (Isa. 45:22). The Christian should also keep “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:2). So we see that man’s most serious prob lem—ph y sica l death—is solved satisfactorily by the Lord Jesus Christ. Is There o "Must" in Human Behavior? Is man so constituted that he must live up to a moral or ethical stand ard? The answer is simple. When one observes the behavior of man in comparison with that of other crea tures, it becomes obvious that he alone is biologically required to re act to moral and ethical considera tions. Every man has traces of a conscience, either developed or un developed. Yet current psychology prefers to consider that there is no such thing as conscience, and that the mention of it is unscientific. But the Bible refers to the conscience as an awareness of having done wrong, ■ and of judgment as a developed guide to right behavior. The heart (the emotional life) is described as con taining the conscience. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out .of it are the issues of life” (Prov. 4:23). There are many passages which show that men are held accountable for their behavior. "The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). Whenever a man plays the fool, he is sure to have to pay his fool tax; there is no such th ing as fool tax evasion. "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Gal. 6:7). In the ever faithful Word of God, we are told that God is unequivocal about man’s behavior. Man must either obey, or else suffer the consequences! T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S
