For the Children W hen W e A re G ood N eighbors (P rov . 3:27-31; 15:1; 17:22; 19:22; 26:20,21) M emory V erse : “A friend loveth at all times” (Prov. 17:17). Have you ever wished that some of your neighbors would move away? They play their radio too loudly; their baby cries all the time; they are noisy when you are trying to sleep at night; and their children are spoiled! Would things be differ ent in your neighborhood if you were a better neighbor, a truly Christ-like neighbor? King Solomon in the Book of Proverbs gives us some advice about being good neighbors. When our neighbor has need of something which we are able to give to him, we are not to refuse to do that. We are not to plan any evil toward our neighbor just because he lives close to us. Quarreling and envy should never be found in our lives at any time. We usually blame the other person for starting a fight or an argument. Solomon said, “A soft answer turneth away wrath; but grievous words stir up anger.” Never forget that one person cannot quarrel alone; he must have a helper! Solomon also said, “A merry heart doeth.good like a medicine.” As a Christian, your joy and good dis position will do much to keep peace and love in your neighborhood. Kindness and truthfulness should be part of your everyday life. “That which maketh a man to be desired is his kindness; And a poor man is better than a liar” (Prov. 19:22, R.V.). No Christian boy or girl should be known in his or her neighborhood as a tattletale. Solomon said, “Where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.” Just as the fire goes out if no fuel is thrown upon it, so quar reling dies away if no hateful words or mean stories are added to it. No, your neighbors are not perfect; but neither are you! Your love at all times, and your friendly helpfulness can lead your neighbors to the only One who can enable you to live in peace and joy. Some Foolish Things Expecting to get to heaven on a wife’s church membership. Doing mean things and expecting to keep them secret. Preaching for money and hoping to gain converts. Praying for God to bless you and continuing to live on good terms with the devil. —Source Unknown AUGUST, 1947
