ON TRACK FOR SPRING AT THE TRUCK CENTER

Welcome back to the Hare Truck Center newsletter! Because I missed it earlier in the year, I want to send a special belated Happy New Year to everyone out there! I’m sure you all missed our January/February edition, and that’s on me. We have been crazy busy at the Truck Center, and we ran out of time. Now it’s time to get things back on track. For me personally, it wasn’t just a busy few months at the Truck Center — it was a busy few months at home, as well. I’ve been bouncing between coaching Spencer’s basketball team and cheering on Conner and his team. With two boys in basketball, I was at a practice or a game about four nights a week. But basketball season has wrapped up, and the boys and their teams had a fantastic season. In fact, Spencer’s team, which is the Hare Truck Center team, ended up tying for second as the season ended. That’s a huge improvement from last year’s one- win season. I am proud of both of them. Now that we’re in spring, the boys have put their basketball shoes away, and they’ve broken out the baseball mitts. You can be sure it’s going to be yet another busy season! Back at the Truck Center, we’ve been so busy that we added a new salesperson, Cara George. Welcome to the sales team, Cara! Since joining, she’s gone through some intense training. As she wraps up her training, you’ll be seeing Cara around the office and at local events. If you happen to see her, be sure to say hi.

We have some exciting news: Chevrolet unveiled their new line of 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD Silverado trucks at The Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. We’ve been anticipating this long-overdue lineup of trucks for a while now, and we were thrilled to see these vehicles in person at the show. Details about the new 2019 Silverado lineup are still coming in, but you can give us a call to learn more and get on our list for future orders. I’ve included more details about the lineup in this issue’s Truck of the Month feature. On the Isuzu side of things, they finally announced the crew cab availability in the 17,950 GVW. I know many of you have been asking about it, and it’s finally here. Actually, as I write this edition of the newsletter, we’ve already sold two! If you’ve been wondering about deals and incentives, GM has been very aggressive so far this year. Just be sure to check out “Truck Talk Thursday” with Thurston so you don’t miss out on the latest incentives. Every Thursday, we go live at 9 a.m. on the dot to share current specials, new incentives, and much more. You can find “Truck Talk Thursday” on our Facebook page at facebook.com/haretruckcenter. When you tune into “Truck Talk Thursday,” you may also have the opportunity to win prizes and save money, but you have to tune in to win! See you then, and have a great spring!

ANNIE DUKE ’ S ‘ THINKING IN BETS ’ WHAT A POKER PRO CAN TEACH YOU ABOUT RISK

Annie Duke may seem an unlikely business consultant given that she’s best known as a professional poker player. But the lessons in her new book, “Thinking in Bets,” extend far beyond the felt. Duke, who studied psychology at UPenn and has consulted for a number of companies, takes the decision-making lessons she learned at the poker table and applies them to the hard choices we have to make in business. To emphasize the nature of her work, Duke begins with an introduction called “Why This Isn’t a Poker Book.” She writes that the process of thinking in bets “starts with recognizing that there are exactly two things that determine how our lives turn out: the quality of our decisions and luck.” When you make a decision, you rarely have perfect clarity regarding all the factors at play. This imperfect picture is what makes every business decision risky. Duke argues that ignoring inherent risk results in dangerous outcome-based thinking. As an alternative, she proposes that you acknowledge that not every decision will be the right one. This way, you can investigate the nature of your decision-making process and improve it without being blinded by lucky (or unlucky) results.

you never know which cards the other players hold. You can make educated inferences based on the information you gather, but there is always going to be a risk in calling a bet. The process parallels how we decide what’s best for a company. We analyze all the information we have at hand and make a projection about the best option. Until the decision plays out, we won’t know the outcome.

Though Duke knows more about poker than just about anyone, she

doesn’t limit her examples to gambling. She writes with equal skill and depth about everything from CEOs to football coaches. “Thinking in Bets” is a comprehensive overview of risk assessment that provides countless tips on how to improve your decision- making. Even if you have no idea whether a flush beats a straight, you’ll find “Thinking in Bets” a valuable addition to your leadership library. Entrepreneurship requires making millions of decisions. Don’t you want to make them better?

Poker provides a fertile analogy for this concept. It’s a game of imperfect information. No matter how much poker you’ve played,

FAMILY TIME IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Hiking A hike with family is an easy way to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. All a hike requires is a trail and a sense of adventure. The best part of hiking is that you can tailor the distance to fit your family’s needs. If you have children or grandkids who aren’t up for the challenge of an arduous daylong trek, there’s sure to be a shorter scenic trail. If nothing else, you can always turn around and backtrack the way you came. Fishing Fishing is a great way to get out and do something relaxing yet challenging. It doesn’t require a lot of skill or investment. All it takes is the willingness to learn and the desire to connect with nature. This is why fishing is the perfect activity for youngsters of all ages. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your rod and reel and head to the nearest lake or river. While these are all great stand-alone options, together they form an amazing three-headed monster for your next family outing. By combining camping with a hike to a river or lake where you can go fishing, you are sure to create lasting memories with your family that will draw you closer together. Ditch the lines at the airport and the stress of travel. Unleash the possibilities of adventure in the great outdoors.

Family adventures are a great way to grow closer and develop meaningful connections. But with lodging prices rising and the logistical nightmare that traveling with the entire family can be, many Americans are looking at a new option: ditching the beaches and resorts and heading to the great outdoors. Actually, we know this option isn’t new at all. Spending time outdoors with family may very well be one of the most time-honored traditions ever. Camping Lodgings and flights are expensive, so going on a family vacation can cost thousands of dollars — and that’s just for the basics! But camping only requires a tent, a fire, picnic food, and water. Rather than scarfing down fast food between flights and dealing with airport security, departure delays, and long flights, take a deep breath and roast marshmallows over the fire with the people you love.

Do You Need a Media Detox?

With the current trend of getting TV, social media, and news alerts sent to our phones, we have access to more media than we could ever consume. While constant connectivity is a boon for many aspects of our lives, researchers are discovering that too much stimulation is cause for concern. One study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that too much social comparison, spurred by the likes of Facebook and cable news, can lead to an increased risk of depression. If you find yourself pressured to live up to the public lives of friends and family, or if you feel like you’re being bombarded with too much news and entertainment, consider a media detox. A detox doesn’t require you to unsubscribe from social media services or unplug your TV forever. Instead, think of it as a vacation from the overstimulation so many of us experience. Ask yourself which aspects of your media diet are causing more stress than they’re worth, and take a break from them for a little while. “In the same way we think about what we eat, we should think about what we read, what we’re seeing, what we’re engaging in, and what we’re interacting with every day,” Emma Watson told CNN in an interview about her selective social media use. If you’re not

mindful of your media consumption and participation, it tends to pile up. When you detox, it’s a lot easier to identify which parts of your media diet are essential and which are only a burden. Another benefit of a media detox is that you’ll have more time to pursue new and dormant hobbies. Because most of

us consume media in small chunks throughout the day, it’s easy to overlook how much that time adds up. All those hours you spend on Facebook could be used to start a garden, knit a quilt, or join a soccer league. Unless you have an unlimited supply of leisure time (and who does?), you need to be selective in the way you spend it. Remember, media isn’t the cause of all your ills. Used mindfully, it can actually increase happiness and satisfaction. The problem is that we are so mired in the media muck that we can’t get a perspective on how much is too much. A detox will allow you to reassess the media you’re consuming and build a better plan for the future. You can still keep up with your grandkids on Facebook, but it shouldn’t be the only way you interact with the world.
