It Doesn’t Pay to Procrastinate PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
I’ve never been one to procrastinate. Whenever I have an impending project, I plan ahead, because I’d rather get it done sooner than later. I do this mostly because I know I’ll have more on my plate later and want to avoid being overwhelmed. You could say I’m an advocate for “preventive medicine.” I have a system to clean my gutters twice a year, take vitamin D to curb seasonal depression in our cloudy climate, and eat right — for the most part — to stay healthy. There’s a real benefit to preventive medicine, whether you’re administering it to yourself or your home. I’ll get to meet a lot of procrastinators in a few weeks when the cold weather returns. October is one of our busiest months. Our phones ring nonstop as people call in, desperate to upgrade their insulation and avoid another winter spent in a cold house. Or they hear scratching in the walls and realize they never got around to sealing up points of entry before rats could make themselves at home. Most people remember these problems from the previous winter, and meant to take care of them, but, instead, they lost track of time. Now, I understand where people are coming from. It’s easy to procrastinate with certain areas of your home when the weather is nice. Out of sight, out of mind. If it’s not causing a problem, it’s easy to justify addressing the problem later. Unfortunately, when later comes around, we’re at the back of the line as everyone else is now trying to solve the same problem. I’ve learned it’s easier to maintain a stable environment than it is to react to disaster. I hate telling someone they need to wait five days before we can come help them out, but when we’re flooded with calls, there’s only so much we can do. If more procrastinators called today, instead of later, they wouldn’t have to suffer in a cold house for longer than necessary. Plus, they’d enjoy the perks of new insulation in the summer months, too!
All this being said, I admit there is one area where I procrastinate: exercise. The more I delay exercising, the harder it is to get started again. I’ll get in a bad habit of skipping workouts or telling myself I’ll work out in the afternoon, only to reach the end of the day and insist I’ll work out the next morning instead. Maybe some of you can relate? It’s a vicious cycle, and I know it will come back and take a bite out of my health if I don’t get on top of my physical fitness again. So, let’s make a pact: If you know you’ll need new insulation in your home, give us a call this August so we can take care of you. Meanwhile, I’ll get on the old exercise bike again. Deal?
