Arriving in Tirana, Albania’s colorful capital, you’ll enjoy free time to explore lively cafés and soak up the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Take a day trip to Kruja, an historic mountain town closely linked to national hero Skanderbeg. Visit the castle, museum, and old bazaar before returning to Tirana for a guided city tour. Travel north to Lezha and Shkodra, where you’ll explore Lezha’s hilltop castle and Skanderbeg Mausoleum, then continue to Shkodra, the gateway to the Albanian Alps. Discover Rozafa Castle, mosques, cathedrals, and the old bazaar. You’ll then head to Durres, Albania’s oldest port city, where Roman amphitheatres and Byzantine ruins reveal the country’s ancient past. From here you’ll make your
way to Berat, the UNESCO-listed “City of a Thousand Windows,” famous for its Ottoman houses and hilltop fortress, and visit the peaceful Ardenica Monastery and the archaeological ruins of Apollonia. Arrive in Vlora, the stunning coastal city where Albanian independence was declared. Journey along the Albanian Riviera toward Saranda, making a stop in Ksamil for turquoise beaches and visiting Butrint, a UNESCO archaeological site filled with Greek, Roman, and Byzantine ruins. Explore the Blue Eye National Park’s vivid spring waters and the stone-built UNESCO town of Gjirokastër, known for its cobbled streets and fortress, before returning to Tirana. You’ll leave Albania for your flight home having experienced a fast-paced but immersive exploration of the country’s culture, history, mountains, and coastline.
