THE KING’S BUSINESS

The Bible Women’s Work Mrs. T. C. Horton, Superintendent

O NE home visited held a combination oi creeds. The father was of the Greek Russian Church, the mother a Romanist and the children attending the Congregational Sunday school. The visitor is a Baptist. W e are glad to have received letters from some of those who have returned to eastern homes after having been led from darkness to the Light of the world, while on visits here in Los Angeles. They give us cause for rejoicing. I n one short week one of our women re ports personal talks concerning the soul’s greatest need with twenty-five women, prayer at four places and two short Bible lessons with eight different people. This does not include much work “by the way” and class work. Nearly every household has a fad or some false doctrine. T he first woman won to Christ by one of our Bible women as she began work in De cember has been diligently studying the Word from that time and attending the weekly class taught by the worker. She i& firmly established in the truth and now goes back east to join by profession of her faith the very church she ignorantly joined as a young woman where she had been urged to enter because it was time to do so. T he Bible woman who visited in a new district last week brought in what is, un fortunately, an unusual case. The father and mother were both earnest, intelligent Christians enjoying all spiritual blessings in perfect fellowship with three growing chil dren who declared they had no desire to leave their home for anything. This case is almost unique, though we are supposed to be a Christian nation. W e found an old lady of seventy-nine years who three months ago buried her hus band of ninety-six years. She was alone,

confined to her bed, but very happy in her Lord. She was comforted by the Christian visitor and said, “I’m expecting Him any moment, you know, and what does it mat ter whether I am alone or a friend is here to see me at the time. He is all in all any way, and I am ready and watching.” A fter between five and six years of very definite teaching with girls of High school classes held in churches or other places iiehr the schools, we can report the most grati fying results. Attendance has steadily in creased and interest has been made evident by many conversions and awakened delight in Bible study. We have classes in connec tion with all the large schools in Los An geles and some others in neighboring towns. A theatrical scenic painter while de tained by work in Chicago, attended mis sions occassionally, became somewhat in terested and went quite out of his habit of life by going to hear Bible talks and lec tures. Our own Dr. Torrey quite caught his fancy and seems to have been a happy factor in finally bringing him to a knowl edge of God’s plan of salvation. After be coming a Christian he went to the plains of Western Texas, where cupid found him a pretty but rather giddy little woman for a wife. This year our visitor found the young couple settled in a home, enjoying their honeymoon, but city life had so strongly at tracted the young unsaved wife she was hardly content out of picture shows and like pleasures. The husband was glad of a Christian visitor but the wife was rather inhospitable and a number of visits and much tactful wisdom were necessary, but God is able and the young people have joined the Methodist church near their home and are both happy in a united Chris tian life, honoring God.
