SUMMER 2023

WINTER IS OVER — LET THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN

WHERE WILL YOUR TRAVELS TAKE YOU?

The temperature is rising, the pandemic is officially over, and summer is rapidly approaching. Vacation time is here, and hopefully, your plans are made. Everyone wants to go somewhere and be out and about. North, South, East, West, all around the country there are places to go and people to see. Of course, you can also cross the pond to Europe or go over the seas to the Far East. For some of us, a tri-state vacation is in our future. Less of a hassle but you’re still geographically here. The most important thing is to do something different. Living in New York City is stressful, and a change in environment is helpful to relieve the stress. Going to the beach and feeling the sand between your toes and swimming; the more south the better. In the ocean, you get batted around and sand finds its way everywhere. In a lake, the water is clear and refreshing but generally quite cold, and if a fish bumps into you, you are really experiencing nature. Hiking or camping out especially in a wilderness area is good for your rejuvenation. Real camping in a tent, waking up in the morning with the dew in the air, and the peacefulness of nature can be quite overwhelming in comparison to all the noise we accept by living in our city. Flying as in hang gliding, hot air ballooning, or surfing is exhilarating and will keep you present. One misstep and oblivion could be your future; for me, I’ll pass on such extreme excitement. But for others, these activities are worth the risk. The above activities are all outdoors, which means you’re exposed to sunlight, which is a good thing. No more lying on the beach with Hawaiian Tropic lathered over you and your sun visor aimed at the sun. Sun baking is not good for your skin. We can all remember going to Jones Beach and coming back as a lobster. You might like Red Lobster, but you don’t want to be a red lobster.

You can become a deceptive lobster if you go to Sea World in San Diego. There you sit all day looking at Shamu and company not realizing your face, arms, and legs are being cooked. At the end of the day when departing, something somehow does not seem right. When you get to your hotel room and look in the mirror, holy cow, you’ve been cooked. For some, winter is never over. You could go to the Southern Hemisphere and go snow skiing, but time moves quickly, and before you know it, winter will return and you can then go skiing a whole lot closer. You could do the tourist thing and head to London, Paris, Rome, or another big city, but then you’re in a city again, and although it’s a change, it’s somewhat still the same. You don’t want to be traveling on the Underground in London in summer. You’re packed in and there’s no air conditioning. The real Londoners just stand in quiet desperation. Better to go to Europe after September when the crowds are gone and the temperatures are milder. For real adventurers, going to the Galapagos Islands, Fiji, or Tahiti could be the trip of a lifetime if you have the time and can stand the excursion. Of course, then there is Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. I have not had the pleasure but would like to if I could get an extended time away from the practice. Since my wife is from France, I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, and with her family spread out over the continent, I have gone not as a tourist but as one in the know. Hopefully, you’ll be able to do something this summer, and to look your best, I’m always here to make your teeth look fantastic.

IT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING

You Must Take Action Now

As Roseanne Roseannadanna said, “It’s always something.” If it’s not this, then it’s that. Life is an experience and something’s always going on. No matter how in control you think you are, life will throw you a curve. So being flexible is the key. The most important flexibility is in your mind. When a change or obstacle appears, do you feel challenged or overwhelmed? Boulders are constantly being thrown in your path. You can step out of the way or get run over. The most in-tune people are the ones who can predict the boulder before it even appears. These individuals are living in the present and predicting the future based on the facts at hand. But no matter how good a prognosticator you are, there will always be events beyond your control. You must live in The Now. In fact, that is the only time you can live in. The past is irretrievably gone. The future is only a construct. You can only develop your future now. The moment is the key. Are you conscious of the moment? It just passed. So you must be aware that moments are constantly happening, and you must take action now. To take action you have to have a plan. Where do you want to go? If you don’t know where you’re going, how are you going to get there? First, decide, and then think of possible ways to attack the problem and then take action. The key is to take action, not procrastination. Procrastination is the killer of all action. You will never have all the facts, so you just have to go. If you make a mistake, you will correct, alter course, and continue on.

Failure is always a learning situation. When you fail, you will ponder, learn from it, and move forward. No action will produce any results. Hence, it is better to fail than not move forward. The more you move, the stronger your mind will become and believe you will succeed. You’ve got to believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, how will anyone else? Fear is false evidence that appears real and can freeze you like a deer in the headlights. Fear is real. If you jump off a cliff, you will fall, but you must make a plan, overcome your fear, and move forward in spite of what you feel. Fear is produced by living too much in the future and not knowing what will happen. You cannot predict the future, so you need to act now and modify your actions based on what occurs. Exercise in the beginning is hard, but as you repeat the routines, over time, your body responds and you get better and stronger. After finishing your routine, you’ll get an endorphin rush, a peaceful and happy feeling. Your muscles and body are getting stronger. Taking action gets easier when continually applied. It moves you forward, and you’ll be amazed at how far you have progressed. There is never a finish line but always another challenge, but over time, your accomplishments will afford you the luxury of security and peacefulness, and if you strive to bring others along, you’ll experience happiness to boot.

NEW SHOWS TO WATCH

On Paramount+: “Rabbit Hole” with Kiefer Sutherland is enjoyable. It also has the guy from “Game of Thrones” who played the King. The show keeps you guessing. On Paramount+: “Tulsa King” with Sylvester Stallone. I know, not Mr. Adrienne, Adrienne but he actually acts well in this series, and I found it quite enjoyable. On Disney+: “The Mandalorian” with the child: Baby Yoda. Hard to believe the little puppet is the star of the show, but he is. For some of us, just a whole show of the child would be quality entertainment. At the Movies: “It Ain’t Over” is a new documentary on Yogi Berra. How can you not like Yogi even if you’re not a Yankees fan? Now I’m not going to the movies anytime soon, but it’ll eventually be on pay-for-play.

On Yankees Network: The Yankees and it’s now possible to watch a game. With the pitch clock in effect, this year’s games move quicker. No more start and stop pitching, picking up the rosin bag, and no more adjusting your batter’s glove ad infinitum. On Streaming: “Top Gun: Maverick” — If you didn’t drag yourself to the theater to see it in IMAX, then if you have a big screen TV at home, you should rent it. Yes, it was worth the hassle to see it in IMAX; however, I could have done without the 30 minutes of coming attractions. I know he’s Tom Terrific — can’t watch his “Mission Impossible” movies, but this is a good one. The closest you’ll ever get to riding in an F-16. If you ever decide to go to a movie in a movie theatre, the only place here in the Big Apple is the AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Broadway in Lincoln Center and only for the IMAX theatre. That’s it! Of course, there has to be a movie worth seeing, which is a real challenge and only getting worse.

MAKE CLEANING YOUR TEETH A DENTAL HABIT When you do things often enough at the same time each day, it turns into a routine. Some routines are monotonous while others can be quite exhilarating. When you exercise routinely, you experience an endorphin rush after your work out. This makes you feel good. Feeling good helps you maintain your routine. Taking a shower or bath each day makes you feel clean, which for most is an enjoyable sensation. To achieve something, you need to develop a routine. To clean your mouth, ideally it should be done twice daily, in the morning and in the evening. When you wake up each morning, you might have the sensation that I call morning mouth. The bacteria within your mouth have been having a party. They have grown and are producing noxious substances, which can irritate and smell. only brush the top, front, and backs of your teeth. To prevent cavities between your teeth, you need to floss. The floss brings air in between your teeth, which kills the bacteria hiding there.

Everyone wants a healthy mouth. You have the tools to make it so. By brushing and flossing twice per day, every day, you will make cleaning your teeth a routine, which ultimately leads to a habit that in this case will maintain your tooth health. You should also come in to see us for a professional cleaning twice per year. We can tell you how you’re doing and make sure there is nothing growing inside your mouth. Since most of you have dental insurance, you can get your exam, X-rays, and cleaning covered at 100%. It’s a no-brainer, and as a bonus, you’re entertained by me. What more could you want? However, if you’ve had enough of me, there’s always Carol THE hygienist, here on Fridays for the past 10 years. She cleans my teeth, and it’s always an enjoyment.

To reduce the party, you should brush and floss before you go to bed, causing the bacterial count in your mouth to be less upon waking. So the goal is to brush in the morning and follow up in the evening. All the bacteria in your mouth are anaerobic, meaning without oxygen. The air contains 20% oxygen. So, when you brush your teeth, you bring air into your mouth, and the oxygen within destroys the bacteria. You can
