Just like that, the year is nearly half complete. This is a good time to stop and take a measure of how we are doing in our business. By this time, we can see how our performance is holding up to our plan. We also have a good view of our prospects for the rest of the calendar year. Let’s take a peek. First of all, from a financial standpoint, we are doing well. The first five months of the year were the strongest in our company’s 45-year history. Unless you’ve been asleep for months, you know that the housing industry is overwhelmed. Since the Great Recession started in 2007, our country has underbuilt housing compared to our annual needs. Strangely, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a demand for housing that has swamped the system. There are not enough builders, laborers, or materials to satisfy the demand. As a result, prices for everything associated with building have skyrocketed to levels we have never seen before. The good news is that our sales are beating our plan — by a lot. The challenge is that we aren’t in control of everything we’d like to be. We have quickly pivoted to a goal of making sure our customers have
professionals are doing to get this message out: This includes those working the sales counters at our stores; the field representatives in
direct communication with builders, framers, and subcontractors; the credit folks; and every driver and installer we have facing the public. This is a record-breaking year by many measures, and there is no end in sight. The even better news is that our hard work over the last several years is paying off right now. One of our big rock goals for 2021 is to work smarter, not harder . We have been working to improve the skills of our team. Without those previous efforts, we would not have been able to succeed as we did in the pandemic year of 2020, and we would be in real trouble this year. The improved strength of our team is evident, but our work is not done. All around us, Franklin people are making daily improvements in process, efficiency, accuracy, teamwork, and safety. I’m encouraged by this good work. The half-year report is that we are a strong company. We are focused and organized. We are working as a team. Individual employee- owners are distinguishing themselves by improving their own performance and helping others do the same. The rest of this year will be just as intense as the start has been. I’m excited that we are ready for the challenge.

The first month of the 2021 EO Fishing Derby is a wrap — and, boy, did people have fun. A lot of folks submitted photos of fish to our contest email. WHAT IS YOUR STOCK WORTH? This is an exciting time of year for our employee-owners. We are close to revealing the annual update on our stock price. The independent auditors and business appraisers are done with their work and have set a price for the stock as of Dec. 31, 2020. What will it be? Will your stock account go up in value? If so, how much? Here's a quick recap: Our company is evaluated by professionals once a year. This helps determine a value and price per share of our stock. All of our employee-owners have a stock account that gets updated in value based on this process. Statements of stock value will go out to each employee-owner in July. If you are an owner, watch your mailboxes in July for this statement. Play the Game! You have until June 20 to submit an entry for our annual “Guess the Share Price” game. One guess per employee. To become an owner, you must simply work at Franklin for 12 straight months and log at least 1,000 hours. If you do that, you automatically become an owner on the following Jan. 1 or July 1. JUNE'S SPOTLIGHT LEFT LUMBER FOR CAVIAR — AND THEN CAME BACK!
Jared Evans, our Jerome Yard Manager, Just Couldn't Keep Away
Did you catch it? “This time around” — this is actually Jared’s second go around with FBS, although his first as an employee-owner. “I enjoyed it before, but when they made the switch to employee- ownership, that was what cinched it for me. I knew I had to come back.” And so he did, with a few more skills and an interesting period of work to show for it. You see, Jared spent 2 1/2 years raising sturgeon on a local fish farm in between stints here at FBS. You might think of classy dinner parties when you think about caviar, but Jared thinks about Southern Idaho and the ponds where he raised the sturgeon that make the stuff. “That job was where I really learned inventory management,” Jared says. It would come in useful down the line. Once again part of a “10 Best Places to Work in Idaho” company, Jared looks forward to retiring at FBS. In the meantime, he enjoys scouting and spending time with family.
As any of our yard managers can tell you, the position is not an easy one. It takes a certain kind of person to keep track of all the moving bits and pieces, organize supplies and materials in a way that makes sense, and still be willing and able
to get out there in all kinds of weather and work like you mean it along with the other team members as we get trucks filled up. Jared, this month's Employee Owner Spotlight, is just that sort of person. He’s a man with an organized brain but calluses on his hands. Of course, he’s a lot more humble about it. “I just like operations,” he says. “I’m a bit of an efficiency guy, and if I can keep things lean, then I’m happy.” Born and raised in Southern Idaho, he’s happy to have a job that suits his talents and the way his brain works. “When I came to work here this time around, I was doing gutters and overhead doors,” Jared says. “But this is much more my speed.”
