M

At this time of year, Munich turns into the beer capital of the world. Huge white tents are packed full of people queuing to grab a place and a pint at this unu- sual festival. Women dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes carry up to four pints of beer in one hand, and a singing German herr is ready to ignore even scantily dressed Fräuleins for this foamy beverage. Perhaps sommeliers enjoy gentle wine tasting, but true lovers know that beer also has a lot to offer. If you are not able to visit Oktoberfest, don’t worry: the world is full of pubs and good beer, and next time feel free to grab a pint, gently lift your little finger and expertly describe to friends the kind of drink they have in front of them. What you need to know for a start is that there are two basic types of beer - lager and ale. Ales have a fuller flavour, the supplements can be felt more and they are mostly unfiltered. Lager is the most popular type of beer. It needs to rest for longer, and in terms of taste it is lighter and fizzy. These two basic types also differ in terms of strength. It is not the same if you drink lager or ale with five per cent alcohol, be- cause ales are naturally stronger. - When you say beer in Serbia, you mean lager. Lager in its original meaning can be translated as “stored” or “preserved”. It is created by using yeast, which is deposited on the bottom of the barrel during
fermentation. It is characterised by a full, powerful ta- ste, which ranges from sweet to bitter, and this beer has a characteristic golden colour – we are told by Branislav Kosanović from “Masters of beer”. And yet, in the beginning there were – ales. This beer is the wise old man among beers, as much as 1,000 years older than lager. Unlike its younger cou- sin, it is fermented by over boiling and is drank signi- ficantly warmer. - Ale is very popular in the English-speaking wor- ld, though it has even made it to India, and just that kind, the most bitter version was the favourite among sailors, because the added hops meant it spoiled the least - says Kosanović. There are many types of lagers, which are usu- ally golden or brown, the most famous of which is Pil- sner from the Czech Plzeň region. Even the residents of Munich, hosts of Oktoberfest, cannot resist its charms, but ale is the real world traveller. Its strong flavour of malt and hops has colonised the hearts of beer drinkers the world over, from India, where its pa- ler variations are loved, to Ireland, where its almost black version is traditionally produced. From red, se- ductive Kilkenny to creamy dark Porter made from toasted malt, connoisseurs among beer lovers have a wide choice. The most famous is, of course, the famo- us Irish stout Guinness.
