What a couple of weeks it has been across the Northern Sydney Local Health District. We proudly launched our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Strategy 2023- 2027. I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone for their hard work in bringing this strategy to life. We were able to have members from each of our five employee networks at the launch and it was fantastic to see firsthand just how passionate our employee networks are about making our district a safe and inclusive space for everyone. If you want to get involved in our employee networks, please visit the NSLHD Employee Networks page on the intranet. People with lived experience and allies are welcome to join. I am proud to work as part of such an inclusive organisation and I look forward to following the progress of the strategy in the coming years. It was fantastic to see and be a part of our wonderful International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife celebrations across the district. To our wonderful nurses, thank you for always providing the best possible care to our patients and their families across the district. You are there for some of their best and worst days and the care you provide is second to none. Equally to our wonderful midwives, thank you for the work you do every day in supporting families on their parenthood journeys and helping to bring new lives safely into this world. Our expecting parents and their families are in the best possible hands when coming under your care. The Bureau of Health Information (BHI) recently released the Emergency Department Patient Survey 2021–22. Whilst 2021 and 2022 presented challenges with coronavirus and influenza, our emergency departments continued to provide

exceptional care to our patients and their families. I was noticeably happy to see that 78 per cent of our emergency departments patients throughout 2021 and 2022 answered that they would speak highly of our EDs and 85 per cent said staff were always kind and caring towards them. Emergency departments can be stressful for both patients and staff and these results are just another indication of the fantastic health care we provide across the district. Now is the time to receive your influenza vaccination, which is available to all staff members and your families. I’d like to thank everyone who has already been vaccinated. For information about the influenza vaccine, online consent, and times and locations visit the NSLHD Home Intranet via the Influenza Vaccination Program 2023 “Quick Links” portal. It was a privilege to attend Administrative Professionals Day celebrations at Macquarie Hospital. All our administrative professionals across the district play a vital role and it is important that we use occasions like this to acknowledge the exceptional work that happens often behind the scenes. I’d like to extend a big congratulations to all the inaugural award winners and thank everyone who helped organise the day.

of the district’s new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Strategy 2023-2027. The new strategy comes after the conclusion of the district’s first Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Strategy which was in place 2020 to 2022. A key shift has been to incorporate a focus on equity in the new program of work. Interim Chief Executive Lee Gregory said the strategy shows the district’s strong commitment to making NSLHD a great place to work for all, regardless of personal background or life experience. “The launch was a special opportunity to hear about the objectives of the new DEIB Strategy and some of the initiatives planned to help us deliver on our vision to create a workforce that reflects the community we serve, where people from all walks of life are represented, respected and feel that they belong,” Lee said. “It was wonderful to have representatives from our five employee networks speaking at the launch event and sharing moving personal experiences of inclusion at NSLHD. It was also great to hear about the work our people have been doing to promote greater inclusion for all and what they want to achieve over the five-year DEIB Strategy period.” NSLHD offers all staff an opportunity to participate in any of the five employee networks, including: 1. Muru Dali Gili Gili Network 2. Cultural and Linguistically Diverse Employee Network 3. The Employee Resource Network on Disability 4. The Pride+ Employee Network and 5. Celebrating our nurses Team lunches, staff awards, Amazing Race days were amongst this year’s celebrations for International Nurses Day. The day is marked every year on 12 May with a different theme, with this year’s theme being Our Nurses. Our Future. NSLHD Director, Nursing and Midwifery Services Claire Harris said this theme sets out what the International Council of Nurses wants for nursing in the future in order to address the global health challenges and improve global health for all. “We need to learn from the lessons of the pandemic and translate these into actions for the future that ensure nurses are protected, respected and valued,” Claire said. “Nurses are there for some of the hardest days of people’s lives, and some of their best. “When I walk through our hospitals, community health centres or services, I always find myself struck by the care and compassion you all show to our patients and consumers, their families, and one another. “Today is about celebrating you and the exceptional care, devotion and the kindness you all provide to our patients and their families. “I could not be prouder of all of you, and I thank you for all that you do.”

Midwives from Royal North Shore Hospital celebrate

Recognising our midwives International Day of the Midwife was celebrated on 5 May across Northern Sydney Local Health District. Staff at Hornsby and Royal North Shore hospitals celebrated with morning and afternoon teas, awards and even a visit from Delta Dogs. This year’s theme was Together Again: From Evidence to Reality. NSLHD Director of Nursing and Midwifery Claire Harris said this is a nod to the upcoming 33rd International Confederation of Midwives’ Triennial Congress, where the global midwife community will come together for the first time in more than five years. “For our midwives, you take on such a special role in so many people’s lives,” she said. “The support, education and care you provide stays with parents and families long after they have left our hospitals and services. “Thank you to each and every one of you working in our hospitals and supporting families in our community, and providing compassionate care at such a life-changing time for many. “Your dedication, skill and compassionate care is felt by thousands of women, their partners and families.” Last year staff cared for more than 5195 babies born at Royal North Shore and Hornsby hospitals.
