Canada’s 45th federal election is scheduled for April 28, 2025. This might be a snap election, but that does not mean your vote should be a snap decision. Do not let mainstream media sway your decision or make you think your vote does not matter. Get the facts from the parties and your riding’s candidates, understand their policies and mandates, and then decide based on the facts and what you want Canada to look like moving forward. Staying with politics, we have a Q&A session with Premier Tim Houston about the recent Nova Scotia Provincial election and what is in store for Nova Scotia over the next four years with his party’s super-majority Progressive Conservative mandate. As things start to warm up, we are excited to spotlight some more phenomenal Atlantic Canadian tourism and hospitality brands. We had the opportunity to chat with Allison Langley, General Manager of Ingonish Chalets, about this cozy year-round getaway on the Cabot Trail, where everyone is welcome. Then it was over to Prince Edward Island to sit down with Samantha Hughes, co-owner of The Birches Cottages, and learn about the brand’s legacy of Family, Peace, and Island Life as they get ready for what we believe will be an extremely busy tourism season in Atlantic Canada. Next, we head to Atlantic Canada’s biggest island, Newfoundland, to speak with Curtis Roebotham, owner and founder of The Homestead Adventures, about how the brand has become one of Newfoundland’s top outdoor adventures and upscale camping experiences. If glamping is your thing, then you need to read our story on Estrella Glamping. We chat with Véronique Godin about why guests are making their way to Village-Blanchard on the Acadian Peninsula in the northeastern corner of New Brunswick, NB, for Rich Acadian culture, stretches of warm, sandy beaches, unspoiled nature, and a bubble glamping experience that is second to none. In addition to our top picks for Canadian Summer Country Music festivals, our Emerging Artist Spotlight Series features Natalie Lynn and her band LOVIET. Yes, we know that Loviet is not in the country genre, but you cannot deny that this radiant alt-indie pop Sheburn-born singer-songwriter powerhouse and her Nova Scotia band are getting noticed internationally for her catchy hooks, emotional lyrics, and incredible high-energy live stage shows. My team and I want to thank everyone who made this issue possible. We look forward to sharing more stories about growing industries, successful businesses, brands, events, and the entrepreneurs making it all happen.

Q&A WITH PREMIER TIM HOUSTON
At a time of political turmoil on both sides of the border, a new survey finds that 56 percent of those surveyed support Premier Tim Houston’s government in Nova Scotia. In the 2024 provincial election, Houston’s Progressive Conservative government earned 53 percent of the popular vote, which means the governing party is more popular now than when they won a‘supermajority’with 43 of the 55 seats in the legislature last fall. Spotlight on Business: You were given a super majority in the recent provincial election. Why do you feel that Nova Scotians support you and your party? Do you think your majority will be an invitation for the opposition to accuse the government of an abuse of power? Premier Tim Houston: I want to take this opportunity to thank Nova Scotians for re- electing our government and for electing new members. We were given a strong mandate to make things happen in Nova Scotia, and that’s exactly what we will do. It is humbling to receive this level of confidence from Nova Scotians, and I want them to know that we will continue to work hard every day to unlock our province’s potential. Spotlight on Business: The landscape of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly has changed drastically. We now have an NDP opposition, and the Liberals are relegated to two members and are the third party. The NDP has but one of their seats, a CBRM MLA, in HRM. Do you anticipate the discussion in the House being centered on urban issues versus rural? Premier Houston: We have elected members from Yarmouth to Sydney to the Halifax Regional Municipality. With this broad rural and city representation, we will ensure that different perspectives are heard as we make decisions. Spotlight on Business: The drama is ever-changing in Ottawa these days. With polls showing that this race could be very close. How does the calling of the recent federal election impact how you negotiate with Ottawa to meet the goals of your mandate? Premier Houston: Our government will work with whoever is elected in Ottawa to improve Nova Scotia. I sent a letter to the leaders of the two major political parties outlining Nova Scotia’s priorities for the federal government, which include: • Protecting the Chignecto Isthmus • Building a national energy corridor is in the best interests of Canadians from Coast to Coast to Coast • Amending our childcare agreement
to allow for some participation by private providers • Helping to build a new, modern, safe pulp mill to create more jobs and economic prosperity in one of our traditional industries • Investing in wharves and high-speed rail. Spotlight on Business: Your government has already started to work on the $650-million investment to protect the Chignecto Isthmus, which is the crucial land bridge that connects Nova Scotia and New Brunswick permitting more than $100 million per day, or $35 billion a year, in trade crosses the Isthmus on the Trans-Canada Highway and CN Rail lines. You refused an offer to use $325M of the revenue generated from the federal carbon tax from former PM Trudeau on the premise that the federal government should pay for the entire project. If there is a change in government or the Liberals continue to with their form of the axe, the tax promise is carried out, would that change your position on the funding formula for the project? Premier Houston: Protecting Nova Scotia’s

system to turn the corner on patient care. What are the two biggest accomplishments, in your opinion, from the first 3 and a half years? What are the next two milestones you hope to deliver? What are your long-term goals for your second term in office? Premier Houston: Our government was elected on a promise to fix healthcare, and while there is still a lot of work to do, I’m incredibly proud of our accomplishments. The number of Nova Scotians without a primary care provider is going down, and we now have more access to care than ever before. As soon as we formed government, we got to work right away setting up more training opportunities for continuing care assistants, nurses, doctors, paramedics, and more. We also raised wages and negotiated fair bargaining agreements to show our healthcare workers that they are valued and encourage them to stay and work in Nova Scotia. A personal significant accomplishment was passing the Patient Access to Care Act. This law does three things that are
main connection to the rest of Canada has never been more important as we take action to increase trade between provinces, this is why we have been doing the work to protect this area while we were waiting for the Federal Government to come to the table. Recently, our government reached a funding agreement with New Brunswick and the Government of Canada to protect the Chignecto Isthmus from the increasingly destructive impacts of climate change. Under the agreement, Nova Scotia has committed to pay up to $162.5 million toward the project over the next 10 years. This represents 25 percent of the total project cost. Nova Scotia maintains its position that the federal government is fully responsible for this project and will maintain its reference to the court. However, it is in everyone’s best interests to strengthen and protect this interprovincial trade corridor as soon as possible. making a difference in healthcare; common sense credentialing; expansion of scope of allied health professionals; and red tape reduction. Now, a doctor in good standing in comparable jurisdictions like the UK, Australia, or other provinces can practice in Nova Scotia. And now, pharmacists can diagnose, treat and prescribe for a wide range of common illnesses - like strep tests, saving trips to a doctor or emergency room. Another initiative I’m very proud of is in February we opened the Physician Assessment Centre of Excellence, a first of its kind in North America that will see internationally trained physicians get licensed faster to practise in communities across the province. And this Fall, the Cape Breton medical school campus is set to open. I’m looking forward to these investments resulting in more doctors practicing in Nova Scotia to meet the needs of today and keep pace with growing population to meet the needs of tomorrow. Spotlight on Business: The Premiers have met to discuss the U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats. What Nova Scotia industries are most vulnerable to large tariffs by the US? What options are you looking to include in retaliatory tariffs or measures against the U.S.? Premier Houston: In the past few months, we’ve seen Canada’s relationship with the United States drastically evolve. We’ve lived on pins and needles, wondering if the U.S. would honour its trade agreements and respect our long- standing relationship as friends and allies. While it appears that Canada may not have been hit with the worst-case scenario in terms of tariffs, thousands of Nova Scotians will be impacted. During this period of uncertainty, the initial non-tariff retaliatory measures we put in place will remain. This means we will
continue to look for ways to put Nova Scotia and Canadian companies first as we review and cancel non-essential contracts with U.S. suppliers. The increased tolls at the Cobequid Pass for commercial vehicles from the U.S. will remain. American alcohol will remain off the shelves of the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. stores. The message from this experience remains, and we have heard it loud and clear – putting too many eggs in one basket is never a good idea. This is why we will work hard to ensure that Nova Scotia becomes more and more self-reliant. Spotlight on Business: Recently, we have seen Nova Scotians and really all Canadians getting on board with the “Made in Canada” movement. What is your government doing to break down interprovincial trade barriers? What conversations are you having with other Premiers to look at their trade policies within Canada and remove barriers that slow or prevent the movement of goods and services from one province to another? Premier Houston: Nova Scotia is leading the country in removing interprovincial trade barriers. In March, we passed the Free Trade and Mobility within Canada Act, which will remove trade barriers from other provinces and territories that agree to do the same for Nova Scotia. This law quite simply says that product testing and professional certification that is good enough for another province is good enough for Nova Scotia, because we trust them, and we are all one country. Ontario has already agreed to table reciprocal legislation, and I look forward to more provinces having the courage to do the same.
Spotlight on Business: You have communicated that your government is looking to pursue natural resource

development to provide the province with more revenue to address the needs of the public and increase prosperity. What is your government currently doing to generate more revenue from Nova Scotia’s natural resource sector? Premier Houston: We must become more self-reliant to mitigate the risk that outside forces can throw us into economic turmoil. Nova Scotia is blessed with countless opportunities. We can get our natural resources out of the ground while still holding companies accountable for being responsible environmental citizens and complying with our environmental laws and regulations. Nova Scotia has incredible opportunities in natural gas, uranium, and critical minerals that can make Nova Scotia a generational success story, creating good-paying jobs for Nova Scotians. By removing the blanket bans on entire industries of natural resources, we have sent the signal loud and clear that Nova Scotia is ready to have meaningful discussions on how these projects can be done safely. Spotlight on Business: Premier Houston, we have covered a lot of topics, in closing, would you like for us to share anything with our readers that we have not spoken about? Premier Houston: While there is a lot of uncertainty and fear with the ever- evolving tariffs, there is a lot of hope and optimism for Nova Scotia. Good things are happening in our province and the world is noticing. We are leading the country in healthcare reforms that have resulted in Nova Scotians seeing a real difference in accessing care. The country is looking to Nova Scotia to lead the breakdown of interprovincial trade barriers. And businesses locally and abroad are finally seeing Nova Scotia as a place where they can invest, grow our economy, and create good jobs for Nova Scotians. I’m optimistic about the future of our province.

HAVE A SAY IN CANADA’S FUTURE Exercise Your Right to Vote
by Jamie Barrie
This may be one of the most pivotal votes in a
generation. On April 28th, the future of Canada will be shaped at the ballot box. While many may focus on party affiliation, the real turning point will be the level of civic engagement in this election. Here are five reasons why voting, regardless of who you support, is crucial to the future of Canada.

minority government, you can contribute to the solution. The future identity of Canada will be shaped by the vision of the next parliament—this is your chance to make a difference and have a voice.
purchases, or subscriptions, voting is a resounding declaration to those who might see us as passive or indifferent. A strong voter turnout sends a clear message to foreign powers and our own government that Canadians value their country. There’s no stronger response to a bully than a nation willing to defend its beliefs. Similarly, a parliament that knows the will of its people will be less likely to stray from public demands. ACCURACY Politics is a game of numbers, power, and manipulation. Low voter turnout often results in the election of parties that don’t truly reflect the will of the people. The largest group of voters are not tied to any party—they are every day, working-class people who care about issues, not partisan
policies. Many of them don’t vote, relying on polls to determine which candidates are leading. They often think, “Why bother voting if I already know who’s going to win?” But the real power is with voting. Politicians seek control of the shared power, and political strategists know how to target voting blocs to win seats. The lower the turnout, the easier it is for them to manipulate the process. This results in a government made up of people few actually want, with policies that differ from what was promised during the campaign. In these uncertain times, the only way to ensure the system works as it should, and that is to vote. Tell your neighbors to vote. The people must hold the power, not the pollsters or political manipulators. Don’t let the polls dictate the outcome—vote to give an accurate reflection of the ideas Canadians want our government focused on.
NATIONAL PRIDE Media reports about the growing trade conflict between Canada and the U.S. repeatedly highlight something remarkable about our nation: Canada has never been more unified around shared values. “The True North, Strong and Free” has never resonated more loudly. The solidarity around buying Canadian and defending our sovereignty is being noticed. This election is about affirming what Canada stands for and our actions to date. Just as we make choices about vacations,
national support. Even a divided mandate, if it reflects record participation, will hold significant weight at the negotiation table. A low voter turnout is seen as a sign of weakness—an apathetic population unwilling to back its country’s policies. Those who seek to exploit Canada will be watching to see how engaged we are in defending fairness, sovereignty, and national pride. A strong vote count is the clearest show of force and a powerful bargaining lever at the negotiation table.
together in the election. The government that is chosen will shape how we live for years to come. Now is the time to ensure that your values and beliefs are reflected in the government we elect. The next few years will bring both challenges and opportunities. Canadians must make their voices heard and choose the kind of country and community they want to be part of. Achieving the best outcomes for our future will require sacrifice, dedication, and engagement. Those who have opinions but don’t vote are allowing others to decide what Canada will stand for. Though political parties have different approaches, there are core issues that unite them. The destination we want as a nation is clear, but the path to get there is what divides us. Whether you prefer a majority or
MANDATES The winner of this election will face a challenging road ahead. The future is uncertain, especially with a long-time ally making a high-stakes gamble—some argue a losing one—by using tariffs to address their economic struggles. Canada cannot avoid the ripple effects of these tariffs, nor the economic turmoil they’ll bring to the U.S. domestic economy, markets, and global affairs. Our nations are deeply interconnected. Canada must pivot and negotiate a path forward that benefits its citizens, businesses, and industries. Regardless of the outcome, a high voter turnout is essential. For effective negotiation, the new leader must have a strong mandate—a clear signal of

SOVEREIGNTY In Canada, we often associate the word “sovereignty” with Quebec, but this time, it takes on a broader meaning. A country where the people vote is one that values its national status. If those south of the border see a weak electorate, they will undoubtedly take advantage of that when negotiating with our leaders after April’s election. Canada is not for sale—and voting is the best way to affirm that. We can say it proudly, but the only way to truly make that message resonate is through record voter participation. The world is watching, and we must show them that Canadians are motivated by pride in our country. We are a federation, not a republic, and, united, we possess the natural resources, economic power, and skilled workforce to rival any nation. But we’re also a caring, compassionate people—a mosaic of cultures, shaped by generations of hard
work and community spirit. We may differ in opinion, but we celebrate our shared national identity. Right now, our greatness is being tested. Whether the challenge is serious or in jest, the joke is over. The time to act to protect our nation is here. There’s no stronger message you can send than to cast your vote in this election. No matter the outcome, your participation matters. The challenges we face will pass, and in uncertain times, coming together as a nation is the key to a prosperous future. Voting is your opportunity to make your voice heard in this free country—a right that has been defended by those who gave their lives for it. Right now, Canada needs every citizen to recognize that voting is a powerful tool, regardless of the party you support and cast your pallor for Canada’s future and have your voice heard.
There’s no stronger message you can send than to cast your vote in this election. No matter the outcome, your participation matters.

“
T hankfully, we were able to catch up with Natalie while she was getting a little downtime between writing some new material and getting ready for LOVIET to head back out on the road for a busy summer of touring. Spotlight on Business: Tell us a little about yourself off the stage. Who is Natalie Lynn? LOVIET: I was born and raised in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. After graduating from high school, I moved to Halifax and studied recording and music arts at Nova Scotia Community College while immersing myself in the city’s music scene. My partner and drummer, Ryan Perry, and I have been performing together in a band for the better part of 10 years now. We’re both from Shelburne, so we enjoy being there to see our family and the lovely beaches as often as we can.
My dream duets would be with Lana Del Rey, Courtney Love, or Sheryl Crow. ”
LOVIET: It’s hard not to be working on music or music-related things around the clock as an independent artist, but it works for me because I love to create things. If not music, then I am working on videos or graphics, all the stuff that goes along with it, or printing my own merch. But for real downtime, you can probably find me lounging around, drinking wine with friends, or hanging at the beach - sometimes all together, especially when I am back in Nova Scotia. I’ve recently begun designing a mini brand of clothing under the LOVIET Brand that I’m also very passionate about. Spotlight on Business: Tell us a little bit about the LOVIET clothing brand, Star Treatment Apparel Retailers. What does the brand represent, and why is it so important to you? LOVIET: I created the “brand” that is also my merch store as an outlet to be more creative and to bring my fans a little further into my world. I have always envisioned this kind of messy, underground, but cool
Spotlight on Business: What do you like to do in your spare time when you are not writing music or on stage?

LOVIET: I started taking piano lessons when I was five. Then a guitar when I was about eleven. I was playing in bands in my teens and was always writing songs. It took me a long time to hone my craft as a singer, unlike my mom who had been singing her whole life in church. I didn’t have that experience, and I was private about it. I was most comfortable on stage performing with my guitar and writing my own music, apart from covering songs. I came out of my performing shell once I started playing in the Halifax bar scene during college. I always knew there wasn’t going to be a way to establish myself in the industry from
90s and 2000s-inspired rocker style that my music also encapsulates. So, it’s been a really fun experience, identifying looks that I can design and clothing I can screen print on. I like going after those one-of-a-kind garments and creating something for fans that is unique and custom for their very own. Spotlight on Business: Who inspired you to get into the music industry? When did your passion for music begin? When did you discover that you might want to make a career out of music? LOVIET: When I was young, my mom
was a singer in a band, so I would see her performing all the time. There were always musical instruments and musicians around the house growing up. I was lucky that way because it was always right in front of me and part of my life. It was very apparent to me, from an early age when I first heard my mom sing and started listening to music, that I was going to pursue a music career.
Spotlight on Business: Can you tell us about your journey? How did you know it was the time to make the jump, and what was it like?

Spotlight on Business: What would you say has been the biggest lesson you have learned during this artistic journey? LOVIET: Be yourself! Trust yourself! A lot of times, people can make you question who you are or who you are supposed to be in this industry. Get to know yourself and what you want. That’ll help you make the best choices for you and your music as an artist. I think your real fans will resonate with that the most. It always surprises me when I release something that maybe I felt was the most self-serving, something I needed to say or get off my chest, but that ends up resonating the strongest with fans. Do what is right for you and the music that you want to put out, and the rest will take care of itself. Spotlight on Business: Have you ever contemplated throwing in the towel? If so, what made you want to keep moving forward? LOVIET: I think it’s probably healthy and natural to have those feelings when you love something so much or it takes so much work, but all that matters is what you do. Just keep moving forward; there isn’t really another option for me. I had a big moment when I was writing for my record ‘The Nighttime Is All In the Timing’. I was in Toronto all winter by myself. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had let everyone down. I had so many different voices around me all my life, especially when I was starting out, and I think I stopped listening to my own for a bit. I had to come to a place where I had kind of accepted what it would be like to give up or, if everything I had worked so hard for disappeared, what I’d do. The answer was simple: I wouldn’t do anything differently, and I would still wake up the next day and do this all over again. Sometimes, I think it’s healthy to kind of let go and give yourself a release from the day- to-day pressure of being an independent artist. Free up that space, and you’ll end up making something special from it.
a small town, especially at that time when social media didn’t exist like it does today. I always wanted to play on bigger stages and that I would go wherever my music led me, and I still feel that way today. Moving to Toronto was a big part of my plan because it is Canada’s music hub. I met my manager, who was a booking agent in Toronto at the time, while I was still in Nova Scotia, and he helped me set up a run of tour dates through Ontario in 2018. I got to see first-hand that there were a lot of markets I had yet to hit and many professional opportunities in Toronto. Nova Scotia Music Week and NSCC also helped me build a solid foundation and make some connections before making the move, which was a help. Spotlight on Business: You have been very busy touring and performing on the main stage at big venues all over the world. How has this helped you as an artist? LOVIET: My whole goal right now when I’m performing on tours and at festivals is to get the experience and reach as many new and existing fans as possible. It’s a daily grind, spending the majority of the traveling in the car or running through airports with all your gear on your back, driving for hours straight, and working under tight budgets, but it is all worth it. Regardless of the venue, we just go into everything with no expectations and do what we do. We’ve been making new fans at each stop, and seeing the reactions from each new audience shows us that we belong on these stages and can hold our own. Spotlight on Business: Tell us about the first time you ever heard one of your songs on the radio. What ran through your mind? LOVIET: I can remember the first time hearing my songs on the radio and how cool it felt. Growing up, I’d tune into the East Coast Countdown every Sunday and hear local East Coast icons like Wintersleep, Matt Mays + El Torpedo, and Inflight Safety, so it’s cool to hear our songs beside our hero’s.

Spotlight on Business: You just mentioned some of the difficulties that you went through while writing ‘The Nighttime Is All In The Timing,’ so how did you feel when this project won Music Nova Scotia 2024 Rock Recording of the Year? LOVIET: It was a huge honour. I still don’t really know how to process it, to be honest, but at the end of the day, feeling that support and recognition will always be huge for me, especially in the rock category as that genre is my genre and feels great to be there despite the turbulent past. Spotlight on Business: What advice do you have for young artist looking to getting into the music industry? LOVIET: I started recording when I was young and had my first couple of studio experiences when I was 14 or 15. One of the reasons I went to school for recording was because I was so naive during my early experiences, and I wanted to be able to protect my own music and know how to communicate in a studio setting. Looking back, I think it’s been an important life lesson for me to know how to communicate whatever it is that I’m trying to say, especially from a creative standpoint with all the people in and out of the process. I think, again, it all comes back to knowing yourself and trusting your own gut and instincts. I’m still learning how to do this and getting better at it now than it has before. It’s hard to say, ‘no thank you,’ when help is being offered or you’re in a vulnerable space as a new artist, but sometimes it’s better to
LOVIET: My dream duets would be with Lana Del Rey, Courtney Love, or Sheryl Crow. I feel like all three of these amazing women are the most iconic artists, performers, producers, and songwriters. All very different in their own ways from one another, but they have all influenced me greatly. Spotlight on Business: Where can music fans find your music and upcoming shows? LOVIET: They can visit my website at www.loviet.com or follow me on any of my socials at lovietmusic to learn more about me and my upcoming shows. LOVIET is back in the Maritimes for a couple of shows in 2025. On Thursday, May 8th, Natalie and the band will be heading to the Rock to perform at the 2025 East Coast Music Awards in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Then, the band returns from its tour in Ontario to take the stage Saturday night at this year’s Jubilee in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, on August 2nd. We recommend that you do yourself a favour and get out and see a LOVIET live show. Natalie and the band are following the same trajectories as bands like The Beaches, with greater industry exposure and touring bigger venues, so getting to see LOVIET in a smaller venue is an experience that you may soon not have the opportunity to get, so get your tickets now. You can thank us later!
let your process guide you and let the music will speak for itself. Stay true to yourself as a person and as an artist, and despite it being a tough business, feelings are signals, and they tell you what you need to know. It’s okay to be sensitive about your work. Spotlight on Business: Do you prefer performing live or recording? Why? LOVIET: I think I’m a live artist first and that my strengths are in my live show. When performing, it’s your stage, and you get to make it whatever you want. When recording, I always felt like I was walking onto somebody else’s stage and expectations. I’m learning to understand more of how to own both stages by producing my own music and finding like-minded collaborators and producers to work with, but I work hard to find that connection between them both. Nothing’s been more challenging for me coming up than when people say things like, “The live show is way better than the record” or that they prefer one over the other. My recent releases are bridging more of that gap between the studio and live on-stage versions. It sometimes feels like a different version of myself when I get on stage versus in the studio, but I think those two artists are now working together more on both platforms.
