ALFED Trade Directory
Helping everyone involved in UK aluminium make connections
Introduction As I browse through this directory of Aluminium Federation members, I’m struck by the sheer range of businesses processing, trading and working with aluminium. And this is testament to our industry’s strength, from the regional players to the major multinationals. The Aluminium Federation is the voice of the UK industry, and our mission is to continue strengthening the market for aluminium products. Whether it’s in our regular conversations with ministers, through the market insight we deliver or the training and technical support we provide – every company in this directory is reaping the benefits of membership. One director put it very well: “As an ALFED member, you get your voice heard. We’re a small metal finishing company, but I get my voice heard very loudly.” Another
Why Join the Aluminium Federation? Whatever your company size or speciality within the industry, we help you access the technical expertise, market insight, business support and government influence you need to boost your competitiveness. We offer different levels of membership based on your business size – so it’s both affordable and valuable. “As an ALFED member, you get your voice heard. We’re a small metal finishing company, but I get my voice heard very loudly. I’m currently the ALFED president, and this gives me influence at a high level within government – I’m routinely on calls with ministers and civil servants. And I had my voice heard even before I was president. In 2004, Introduction Networking
commented: “The events are great because I talk to people that aren’t just in extrusion like us. It’s good to go along, have a chat and see how the market is progressing for everyone else.” As CEO of ALFED, my job is to help you capitalise on opportunities – by fostering a community that champions your interests, fosters innovation and promotes best practice. Every business in this directory is helping develop aluminium and related supply chains, and ALFED’s rapid growth in membership and influence reflects this combined commitment. I look forward to working with you on behalf of your company and the industry.

“There are lots of great opportunities as an ALFED member. I read all the market reports as they come in and use the stats in my management reports – the directors find them very useful. The events are great because I talk to people that aren’t just in extrusion like us. It’s good to go along, have a chat and see how the market is progressing for everyone else. I go to the Extrusion Group meetings, and my colleagues go to others like Automotive and Innovation. That way the whole business benefits.” Steve Nash, Sales Director, Hydro Aluminium Profiles

ADVERT – ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Members of the Aluminium Federation are from a diverse range of industry sectors, covering large scale aluminium production through to precision engineering. So, whether your business is melting, rolling, pressing or machining, it is likely that considerable energy will be consumed to achieve the end results. For high energy-using businesses looking to keep a check on their power costs, there appears to be no hiding place at present or for the foreseeable future. A bullish energy price market combined with ever-increasing ‘non-energy costs’, brought about by green levies, government social policy and ‘use of system’ charges, means businesses are being hit from all sides. As non-energy costs continue to increase to well over 50% of your electricity bill, with forecasts suggesting this share will rise to as much as 67% by 2023, greater emphasis is being placed on becoming more energy efficient. Simply put, unless you become more energy efficient your energy spend will increase year-on-year even if your consumption remains the same. As any self-respecting energy management consultant will tell you, ‘the cheapest unit of energy is the one you never use’. Mitigating against these huge energy costs and navigating a way through the various compensation schemes – designed to encourage companies to help government meet Climate Change Agreement targets – can be
extremely challenging, especially for organisations without the time or necessary in-house expertise. For many years energy intensive businesses relied on buying their energy at the right time, with the right supplier, to control their energy costs. With no real incentive to understand which of their processes was consuming their energy, when it was being used during the day or, more importantly, what could be done to be more energy efficient, it was the shrewd businesses that invested in energy management. Reducing energy consumption does not always have to be about expensive capital expenditure, as results from phase 1 of the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) identified that changing behaviour often produces the quickest and most cost-effective return on investment. A fully qualified energy surveyor can work with you to evaluate your energy demand profile, identify opportunities to reduce consumption and project manage them, meaning your business can focus on what it does best and stay compliant with government legislation. ALFED members should demand independent, unbiased expert advice, pro-active energy procurement, backed up with invoice validation and cloud-based energy data management, to help take control of your energy costs and become more energy efficient.

Frontline Level Certificate The frontline certificate starts by looking at the dynamics of the business and commercial worlds. It moves on to help delegates build self-awareness, recognise strengths and weaknesses, and manage performance. It finishes with a focus on leadership skills, attitudes and behaviours, along with time management, delegation and prioritisation. By the end, delegates gain focus in managing themselves and others to maximise overall team performance. Who it’s for: Those who’ve only been managing for a short time, are very new to management or who may be taking on a management position in future. It’s also ideal for managers who want a broader perspective on identifying and overcoming business challenges. The BLOODHOUND Project’s mission is to share our 1,000mph Engineering Adventure and inspire children and young people by bringing science, technology, engineering and mathematics to life in the most exciting way possible. Aluminium Desert Wheels Challenge 2019 For Years 3-6
The Aluminium Desert Wheels Challenge gives young people the chance to take on the role of engineers by designing their own wheels. It’s for Years 3 to 6 and covers wide area of the Design & Technology National Curriculum. What the Aluminium Desert Wheels Challenge Involves A major element in designing the jet car relates to the wheels. In this challenge, pupils get a taste of what BLOODHOUND engineers are grappling with by designing their own wheels using recycled aluminium. ALFED are sponsoring a number of STEM challenges school children age 7 – 18. Please visit our education pages on our website for further details. If you are interested in being one of our sponsors contact our team.

Lunch & Learn: Exploring the Art of Aluminium Machining
How do you get more than 30 of the UK’s top aluminium manufacturing people to take time out from their business? Spending several hours away from the office is a big deal. But that didn’t deter the attendees of a Lunch & Learn event which took place at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in November.
With presentations on topics like virtual machining and advances in aluminium aerostructure parts machining, as well as an impressive live cutting tool demonstration in the AMRC’s Factory of the Future, there was plenty to talk about. For Richard Foster, Machining Specialist at Rolls- Royce, the day was a reminder about the value of exploring new ways of working: “These events are really helpful in enabling us all to see the capabilities of new and emerging technology. It’s been an education on the art of the possible.” With the chatting continuing long after the last presentation ended, it was clear from the energy in the room that those hours away from the business had proved to be more than worthwhile. Because, with the right event, taking time out of the office to network and gain new industry insights isn’t a luxury. It’s essential.
With industry drivers forcing manufacturing processes to be more efficient, innovative and cost-effective, Lunch & Learn events are key events to attend for the influencers among us. So, why risk having time out to attend an event themed around Taking airframe machining to a whole new level? With more than 60 years in the industry, Ian Walsh, Senior Sales Executive of A&G Precision, certainly saw the value of doing so: “Business is a journey in which you never arrive. The moment that you arrive or think that you have, it’s too late. These events are really worthwhile because they help to spread the word as to where the industry is going next.”
