Oxford Street Improvements Coming in 2027
The City of London is moving forward with improvements to Ox- ford Street West from Westdel Bourne to Commissioners Street West. Preconstruction work begins this spring. The project will widen Oxford Street West from two lanes to four lanes between Westdel Bourne and Commissioners Road West to improve traffic flow. The work also includes upgrades at intersections, new stormwater infrastructure, sidewalks, and in-boulevard bike lanes. “This project is needed to improve traffic flow and safety along Oxford Street West,” explains Paul Yanchuk, Program Manager, City of London. “The road is already busy and is expected to see more traffic in the future.” Once the work is complete, the corridor will have enough capac - ity to meet current and future needs, and it will provide safer and more accessible options for walking and cycling. The City’s 2030 Transportation Master Plan (2013) and Cycling Master Plan identified Oxford Street West as a future four-lane corridor and cycling route. As part of these strategic plans, the City completed an Environmental Assessment in 2024 identified the elements included in the project’s scope as the best option to meet future transportation needs. The project requires two full construction seasons to complete the work between Westdel Bourne and Commissioners Road West. While construction was originally planned to begin in spring 2026, the start of major construction has been moved
to spring 2027 due to design challenges, utility relocations, and the time needed to secure property easements. Pre-construction activities, such as utility relocations and possi - ble tree removals, will take place in 2026. Starting full construc - tion in 2027 helps reduce the risk of the project extending into a third construction season. When construction does start, one lane of traffic in each direc - tion will remain open. There may be turning restrictions, tempo - rary intersection closures, and short-term closures during pav - ing. Detour routes and alternate access will be clearly signed to help manage traffic and reduce impacts. The City will host a public meeting in March 2026, where more information on the project design, timelines, and next steps will be available. Details on the time and location will be shared once they are confirmed.
