Longtime Comet throwing records broken in consecutive weeks
By John Burbridge sports@charlescitypress.com Records are meant to be bro- ken. For some, though, it takes a long time before they get the memo. Take the two former Charles City girls throwing records. One of them dated back to the Chicago Bulls Dynasty; the other was set during the Rea- gan Era. But on consecutive Charles City home meets last track and fi eld season, Leah Stew- art – then a junior – erased both from the Comet all-time lead- erboard. First, Stewart tossed a meet-winning discus throw of 128 feet, 6 inches, which broke a 28-year-old record set by Krista Niezwaag in 1996. Then a few weeks later, Stewart’s meet-winning shot put throw of 41 feet, 5 inches eclipsed a 37-year-old record set by Heather Tietz in 1987. There were more adjustments to the Comet all-time lead- erboard when the girls shut- tle hurdle relay team of then freshman Edie Collins, senior Lauren Staudt, freshman So- phia Calpito and senior Keely Collins won the Class 3A State-Quali fi er with a time of 1 minute, 6.37 seconds, which was about 0.85th of a second better than the previous Comet record set by Brianna Carey, Taylor Schmidt, Lynn Hoeft and Sadie Ruzicka in 2017. THE EFFORT FROM THE most-recent SHR record setters wasn’t a fl uke, as proven at the following state meet where the foursome came within a 0.05 of a second from matching its school record attained at the state-quali fi er with a third-place fi nals time of 1 minute, 6.42

seconds behind state champion ADM, Adel’s blistering time of 1:04.20 and runner-up North Polk (1:05.99). Sisters Edie and Keely Col- lins earlier scored 12 points for the Comets at the state meet while placing second and fourth, respectively, with top clears of 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump – placing differential was based on how many previ- ous failed attempts. Recent Charles City graduate Josiah Cunnings’s attempt to defend his Class 3A boys long jump state title from the season before came up a little short in the most recent state meet, where his top fl ight of 21 feet, 10 3/4 inches was good enough for third place behind cham- pion and Clear Creek-Amana sophomore Aren Schlemme (22-2 1/2), who edged Decorah senior and runner-up Kaiden Quandahl by a half-inch.
