YEAR 7 TRANSITION
INQUISITIVE | AMBITIOUS | INDEPENDENT
Welcome to The Wellington Academy
The Wellington Academy is a very special place: founded by the prestigious Wellington College and named after one of our greatest military leaders, we are proud to offer a warm, inclusive and ambitious education for every student. As a member of the Ascend Learning Trust, we are part of a wider community that fosters a deep sense of belonging as well as the highest academic standards.
We believe education should inspire. That's why we offer a broad and balanced curriculum that nurtures academic success and creativity whilst developing core personal attributes such as independence, curiosity and courage; attributes that we believe are integral in equipping our students to play their part in society and enable success beyond their time at our school. Alongside core subjects, students thrive through the arts, sport and leadership opportunities - supported by exceptional facilities including a theatre, dance studio, music suites, a bespoke sixth form and our newly opened Resource Base, we provide a truly world class, fully inclusive educational provision. Our students are at the heart of our school. We pride ourselves on the caring and supportive environment we offer, which enables all students to flourish. Underpinned by strong pastoral care, we greatly value our place in the wider community and actively engage in both our military and civilian partners in the local area. When your child joins us, you become part of the Wellington family. We look forward to welcoming you to performances, exhibitions, sporting events and community celebrations. We would be honoured to support your child's journey and promise to work with you every step of the way to help them grow into confident, curious and capable adults.

Transition
INDUCTION DAY Our Induction Day is designed to help the students learn as much as possible about the school and get them used to the idea of starting at The Wellington Academy in September. This day will give them the opportunity to meet friends, other students and staff at the school. They will experience team building activities, sample lessons and the main aim to familiarise themselves with the building and key staff. The rest of the day will be spent in tutor groups. Students will already have been organised into tutor groups from the information supplied by the students and their primary schools. These will remain the same for when your child starts at the school in September.
The Tutor groups are created to focus your child academically and with conjunction with the primary school’s advice. No changes to the tutor groups will be made before school commences in September.
This does not include extra visits as identified by the primary schools. Please contact SEN team for details.
MEET THE TEAM
We have a whole team of people to ensure the move to secondary school goes as smoothly as possible. The Transition Day is obviously the biggest but there will be regular communication with current schools, including visits by some of the people below .
Ms Ashton-Emslie HLTA
Mrs Hosie Senior Leader for Transition
Mrs Thurston Year Leader - Year 7
Mrs Pallister Deputy SENCO
Mr Kennedy Head of KS3
Enhanced Transition
Welcome to Year 7
As your Year Leader, I am here to support you with your pastoral needs. This means I am here to listen, to help, and to guide you through any challenges you may face, whether that’s settling in, friendships, wellbeing, organisation, or simply having someone to talk to. My role is to make sure you feel safe, happy, and supported so that you can thrive both academically and personally. My name is Mrs Thurston, and I am your Year Leader. I am absolutely delighted to welcome you as you begin this exciting new chapter of your journey. Starting secondary school is a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel a mixture of excitement and nerves. Please remember — you are not alone.
Year 7 is a year full of new opportunities — new subjects, new teachers, new friendships, and new experiences. I encourage you to get involved, try your best, be kind to others, and most importantly, be yourself.
I am really looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. My door is always open, and I am here whenever you need support.
Welcome to the start of a fantastic year!
Mrs Thurston Year Leader
Welcome to the Wellington Academy!
We are really looking forward to meeting you all in September and getting to know you as you start your journey with us in year 7.
I am Mr Kennedy and I am the Head of Key Stage 3. I oversee the pastoral, safeguarding, attendance and academic progress of 600 KS3 students from Year 7 all the way to Year 9. I work closely with your Year Leader and will be there for you to talk to if you are worried, in need of support, or even if you'd like to share something really amazing about yourself. At the Wellington Academy we will expect the very best from you so be prepared to be challenged! Each and every one of you will become a member of our Wellington family and we want you all to be successful, happy and to feel welcomed.
I am really looking forward to seeing you in September!
Mr Kennedy Head of Key Stage 3
“My daughter was given excellent support during the transition between year 6 and year 7, from both the SEN and Year 7 team. She was given opportunities to get to know staff and the students in her tutor group during the step up day which helped her confidence for the first day of term as she knew exactly what to expect. The enhanced transition she had with the SEN team was fantastic, giving her opportunities to meet the people who would become her trusted adults and to feel at home in the department, as well as the wider school. I am certain that it is the support from both of these teams that has enabled her to flourish in Year 7. She walks through the door with a smile on her face everyday, knowing that she will be welcomed and feel a valued part of the community.” Year 7 Parent

At the start of the year we have exclusive use of C block canteen and its playground. LEAVING THE SCHOOL SITE Students may not leave the premises during the day, except for a medical /dental appointment when being collected by a parent/guardian.

However, the timetable is organised on a fortnightly basis to allow the flexibility required to accommodate all subjects in the curriculum. CONDUCT CARDS Students are expected to always carry their conduct card and present them on the desks for each lesson. Conduct cards allow staff to recognise and reward positive behaviours around the school by signing their initials on the reward & recognition side of the card. Once they have filled up the positive side, this is worth 20 house points that the tutor is expected to log on Arbor each morning during tutor.
These are then tallied up for house competitions, year group competitions and termly reward assemblies to drive the incentive to be a positive member of the community at The Wellington Academy. ENRICHMENT (AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES) Students are encouraged to attend a wide range of enrichment activities. Parents are able to sign up their child to each activity via the Arbor Parent Portal.
The dates and times of each enrichment activity are viewable on the Portal.

LEARNING AT THE WELLINGTON ACADEMY
The curriculum is developed around our key philosophy and we want students to be Inquisitive, Ambitious & Independent. We want our learners to be active learners and our lessons encourage this. Through a variety of teaching methods students are encouraged to investigate and explore new ideas and knowledge. In addition, they are challenged to perform, present and ask questions. Every lesson is underpinned by the schools’ Learning Cycle, which is model for the design of lessons based on the best research into how children learn. Students will experience expert teachers who are dedicated and committed to create innovative, rigorous and enjoyable lessons. Through effective feedback and homework, students quickly discover their strengths and areas they can improve in. At The Wellington Academy we believe that learning should be engaging, challenging, and fulfilling.
Students will be given the opportunity across lessons to work individually as well as in groups.
They will be taught the core knowledge of the subjects along with the skills needed to progress as lifelong learners.
A WELCOME FROM THE SEND TEAM!
We are very much looking forward to working with you and your child/ren as they begin their transition to our school. We have a friendly and experienced team of Teaching Assistants and Higher Level Teaching Assistants who are ready to support your child where appropriate. Our vision is to create a nurturing, inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported. We aim to help young people develop resilience, independence, and confidence, enabling them to make the best progress possible throughout their time with us. We also work closely with teachers across the school to promote inclusive classroom practice. Our role involves supporting staff in adapting teaching and learning approaches so that every student can access the curriculum effectively. In addition to in‐class support, we provide targeted interventions on a small‐group or one‐to‐one basis. These interventions are planned following a thorough triangulation process, drawing on teacher insight, assessment information, external agency advice where appropriate, and student voice. This ensures that every intervention is purposeful, personalised, and impactful. Where appropriate, we also operate a keyworker system, offering a consistent point of contact for students and families. This helps to strengthen communication between home and school and supports sustained progress, wellbeing, and engagement. We have a designated area within the school that includes smaller teaching spaces, offering a calm and focused environment for learning and additional support when required. Please look out for information about our Enhanced Transition events. These sessions run alongside the whole‐school Transition Programme and offer extra opportunities to visit the school, during the summer term Further details will be shared with you over the coming months. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to email us. We look forward to meeting you soon

STUDENT We pride ourselves on the education that we
Your child can expect to:
To respect rights, opinions and property of others: Do not be selfish, prejudiced or intolerant. Everyone is equal and should be treated so. Allow others to put their opinions forward and do not interrupt while others are speaking. Treat other people’s property with care, this includes text books and other school resources. To work hard and do your best: Use 100% of your lesson time to work. Chats with others are for break times, NOT during lessons. Attempt all homework/class work to the best of your ability. Do not give up without trying. To take responsibility for your work and actions: Know what work you have to do. If you miss work, find out what it is and catch up.
Be happy and safe in school. Attend stimulating and challenging lessons. Work in an environment of co-operation and collaboration. Receive constructive feedback on their work. Be given targets to work towards and surpass. An inquisitive curriculum that will keep
you wanting to learn more. Activities that will build your independence.
We expect the following from all of our students: To be honest, polite and considerate at all times Think of others before yourself. Be helpful. The words “Please” and “Thank you” go a long way. Apologise when you have acted thoughtlessly. Open and hold doors for others to pass through.
Hand in all homework on time. If you have problems, seek help.
Address all staff as Sir or Miss. Be prepared to tell the truth.
Do not blame others for something that is your fault, ACCEPT when you are WRONG. FORGETTING is not an excuse.
EXPECTATIONS provide for our students at The Wellington Academy.
To be well prepared for all lessons: Be prepared and on time for your lessons with all necessary equipment. Pack your school bag the night before; developing a checklist will help you with this. Use lockers and toilets at the assigned times, not between or during lessons. Be prepared to work and sit quietly before lessons start. To listen carefully and follow instructions: Be silent when required and listen carefully to instructions given to you by staff. It is important that ALL instructions are followed properly. To know there is a time to listen and a time to speak: Stop whatever you are doing when a member of staff is speaking to you. Speak when spoken to and be polite at all times, your tone and attitude must be appropriate. In class, if you wish to speak to participate, raise your hand and WAIT for your teacher to invite you to talk. Listen to others when they are speaking. It is impolite not to, you may learn from them!
To move around school sensibly: Move around corridors quietly, quickly and sensibly. Do not run or loiter. Keep to the left hand side at all times. When you are on the stairs, keep in single file. Do not kick or slam the doors, open and shut them quietly. To care for your environment: Respect the school and its property, report any damage immediately.
Do not write on desks, walls etc. Put all litter in the bins provided. Keep off the grass and flower beds.
To remember you are an ambassador for the school at all times: Make sure that your behaviour and appearance are at there best, at all times. Always wear the correct uniform to and from school. Your uniform identifies you as a student at The Wellington Academy. Take pride in it, as the school is represented by the image you present to the local community.
LOCKERS Lockers are available to rent for a year at a time. To request a locker, you will need to purchase one from Parent Pay once you receive your login, you will then be issued a locker key from Student Services. If you have any questions regarding lockers please contact your child’s tutor. THE SCHOOL CANTEEN The school’s canteen is available for students to use before school, at breaktime and lunchtime. REWARDS
TThe Wellington Academy is committed to celebrating the success of students within the school and wider community. House points are awarded for outstanding contribution to classwork, independent learning, homework, school life through house competitions, department run activities and engagement with enrichment. These rewards are recorded on the school’s system Arbor. The students commonly refer to these as ‘House Points’, and once recorded parents and students will be able to view these entries uvia the Arbor App. The school’s reward system is linked to the number of ‘positives’ on the system and the total percentage of attendance. Past rewards have been Cinema afternoons, non-uniform days, Christmas Party's, breakfast with staff and trips to mention but a few. Additionally, we end every term with a rewards assembly ran by the Pastoral team, during which time we recognise academic effort, progress and attainment and individual student achievements.
OUR HOUSE SYSTEM
Our house system is a vital part of school life, designed to reflect our core values, create leadership opportunities, build a strong sense of community with inter-house competitions and fundraise for our school nominated charity - Help for Heroes. It also plays an important role in how we recognise and reward student achievements through the house points given out in lessons, and through house assemblies. At the end of the year, weekly interhouse competition results and house points are tallied up for our annual end of year rewards afternoon announcing the Wellington Award, Sports Day Cup and House Cup winners. Every child will be welcomed into one of our four houses when starting at The Wellington Academy, where they’ll have the opportunity to contribute, grow and feel a real sense of belonging.
