Omnichannel Marketing Rises Customer engagement across all communication channels is now the top priority for many brands that sell online, as their market- ing teams shift to an omnichan- nel strategy combining digital and physical spheres.
Digital Edition Exclusive:
Consumers Welcome Going Green by Greg Kishbaugh C onsumer interest in sustainable packaging continues to grow, according to a recently released report from Triv- ium Packaging. The 2023 Buying Green Report , released in
While many interactions remain in the digital sphere, packaging is increasingly being acknowledged as a key physical touchpoint for imparting brand values, such as sustainability, service, and luxury. How packaging converted and suppliers can capitalise on this trend in an e-commerce market – now worth $63.60 bn in 2022 – is examined in detail in The Impact of Omnichannel on E-commerce Packaging , a new report from Smithers. E-commerce supply chains con- tinue to evolve, posing direct chal- lenges for the packaging and cre-
conjunction with Earth Day, shows that despite consumer prices rising substantially due to global inflation, consumers are increasingly willing to pay more for products in sustain- able packaging. More than 80 percent of respondents overall would be will- ing to pay more for sustainable packaging, up four points from 2022, and eight points since 2021, signaling that even with a worsening economic situation, the environment re- mains a consumer priority. Younger consumers (18–24 year- olds) are even more willing, leading at 90 percent.

compared to North and South America. This is most notably seen in the reuse of packaging (77 percent) and in reducing food and packaging waste (66 per- cent). Nearly 60 percent look for information on the recyclability or sustainability of the packaging on the products they buy. Consumers in South America primarily engage in activities that protect and/or preserve nature (48 percent) such as water conservation, planting trees, gardening, and eliminating pollution – a rate that is higher than any other region. Although people in this region still have strong sustainable beliefs, val- ues, and behaviors, 41 percent say the places where they typically shop do not sell sustainable products, compared to 22 percent in Europe and 24 percent in North America. This prevents consumers from adopting additional sustainable behaviors, like pur- chasing more products with sustainable features. Sustainability plays an important part for North American consumers, as well. More than 60 percent consider it important to buy products in recycla- ble or environmentally friendly packaging and see themselves as environmentally aware consumers. However, consumers in North America tend to be unsure about which sustainable features to look for in products (28 percent), more than consumers in
Consumers now consider the impact their pur- chases have on the environment, and the majority already have incorporated sustainable practices in their daily lives; Two-thirds of consumers consider themselves environmentally aware. Up six points from last year’s survey, 63 percent of consumers are now less likely to buy products with packag- ing that is harmful to the environment. And their intentions are reflected in their actions: 71 percent already engage in reusable and refillable activities (and 80 percent are interested in buying refillable packaging products to reduce their environmental impact), while over half engage in reducing food and packaging waste. Narrowing in on sustainable packaging specifi- cally, 71 percent of consumers are actively choos- ing products due to the sustainability factor of the product packaging. Interest in purchasing products in sustainable packaging has increased since 2022, especially among younger consumers and high earners. But while 59 percent look for information on the label about recycling and sustainability, 46 percent say the biggest barrier to purchase was un- clear labeling on packaging. Consumers in Europe are most actively partic- ipating in a wide variety of sustainable practices

ating critical decisions for how the latest formats can be integrated into a successful omnichannel strategy. Smithers’ analysis identifies the following top op- portunities for packaging in an omnichannel sales landscape: Automation — Investments in a new generation of forming, converting, and filling equipment can opti- mize order turnaround for an e-commerce seller. Delivery channels — The e-commerce market is expanding beyond conventional delivery channels with new distribution channels, such as click and collect, and same-day fulfilment, which demand their own consideration from packaging designers. Returnability — Product returns are far more fre- quent in e-commerce, especially in segments like clothing and fashion, and any omnichannel solu- tion needs to consider its implications. Improving pack returnability through reseal tabs or fixtures, and easy-to-use address labels is an area of much innovation in 2023, as packaging buyers acknowl- edge its important contribution to retaining loyalty and demonstrating a true commitment to the con- sumer experience. Sustainability — In omnichannel the sustainabil- ity of a pack takes on an increased importance, it can be a critical differentiator between sellers. This is placing an emphasis on rightsizing packaging, using a minimum of secondary or protective ma- terials while still ensuring the safety of the goods under shipment, as well as selecting the lowest car- bon materials and building recyclability into deliv- ery formats. Unboxing — In e-commerce the first tactile ex- perience of a brand for a customer is when they actually unpack the gift at home. In this omnichannel environment, there is a pre- mium to invest in innovative, harmonious packag- ing designs, materials and graphics that make the best impact. A clever, luxurious delivery pack is much more likely to bolster the receiver’s overall perception of the brand; once they are removed from the myriad visual cues found in physical retail environments. Smart packaging — E-commerce is increasingly dependent on customer information and repeat interactions to build up a digital profile that can be leveraged for repeat sales. Fitting omnichannel packaging with RFID or NFC tags, and scannable 2D data matrix (QR) codes, can support this, in- cluding relaying information in real time to give new efficiencies in warehousing and logistics.

XSYS Expands Platemaking Portfolio With Exposure Unit Building on its portfolio of platemaking equip- ment, XSYS has introduced the ThermoFlexX Cat- ena-E 48 unit for LED exposure of flexographic printing plates for the label, folding carton, and flexible packaging markets. Catena-E LED exposure technology was first intro- duced to the market in 2020 and the larger Catena-E 80 model for wide web applications was adopted by platemakers and printing companies serving the glob- al flexible packaging and corrugated board markets. Exposing plates in a maximum size of 35 inches x 48 inches and up to 0.250 inch in thickness, the Catena-E 48 has reportedly been built to match the speed of the TFxX 48-S plate imager from XSYS, which offers an output of 6m2/hr. Contact Originators Invests In Esko Technology Flexographic plates producer, Contact Origina- tors, Dukinfield, England, has invested in a third Esko CDI Crystal XPS imager and exposure solu- tion to support its move into the flexible packaging and label markets.
The purchase takes Contact’s investment in its 32,500-square-feet site in Dukinfield to more than £5m since moving to the facility in March 2021. The CDI Crystal XPS will be installed shortly in a dedicated production hall for flexible packaging and label plates. It is expected to be fully oper- ational before the end of April, and provides the company with three inline flexo workflows for effi- cient, integrated and automated platemaking. “It’s clear that consumers are paving the way for a sustainable future, and businesses need to listen – external factors like the economy don’t phase the eco-conscious demand. Buyers are looking at the big picture: the survival of our planet. Consum- ers are turning away from harmful packaging and turning towards sustainable, recyclable options like metal packaging.” The 2023 Buying Green Report is based on a sur- vey of more than 9,000 consumers across Europe, North America, and South America exploring par- ticipants’ values and behaviors related to sustain- able packaging amid a changing world. To download the full report and review a more detailed report specific to each region surveyed, visit http://buyinggreen.triviumpackaging.com . New eBook Analyzes Corrugated Industry Trends Baldwin Technology Co. Inc. has launched a new set of resources for corrugated packaging manufacturers, centered on a new eBook entitled “ From Beast to Beauty ,” analyzing trends facing the industry. Baldwin is a global manufacturer and supplier of process-automation equipment, parts, service and consumables for the printing, packaging, textile, plastic film extrusion and corrugated industries. The introduction of the new corrugated eBook kicks off the company’s new PrintEnomic$ resource hub, which will house separate eBooks, industry organization and trade publication links, and a host of podcasts and instructional guides to help print- ers maximize profitability in the corrugated, narrow web, and offset printing spaces. In consultation with its customers, industry ex- perts, and in-house engineering team — along with a review of the latest reporting — “ From Beast to Beauty ” explores four primary trends that will im- pact box-making facilities: E-commerce, Brand Pro- tection, Sustainability and Labor Challenges. Referencing the eBook’s somewhat unusual, full ti- tle — “ From Beast to Beauty: How the Little Brown Box Became as Fashionable as the Little Black Dress That’s Shipped in It ” — Baldwin Chief Marketing Of- ficer Simon Blake noted that the corrugated packag- ing is the new “shop window” for retail. It’s so much more than the delivery mechanism; it’s a critical step in communicating the brand experience. Download “ From Beast to Beauty ” at printenomics.com .

Tempo Installs XSYS Catena takes Exposure Unit First established in 1970 as a poly bag manufactur- er, Tempo Flexible Packaging Inc. has spent the past two years implementing a large-scale investment plan. More than 10,000 square feet have been added to the sizable facility in Innisfil, north of Toronto, Ontario, along with the installation of new equip- ment, including a new CI flexo press from Germany. The project also involved upgrading the plate room, which already contained a ThermoFlexX 48 imager and Xpress Thermal processor, before the new Catena-E 48 exposure unit from XSYS was in- troduced late last summer. The family-run company has more than 170 em- ployees and supplies a wide variety of flexible

pouches, as well as roll stock and bags, to the food, pet food, and lawn and garden industries across North America. As a vertically integrated manufacturing facility, Tempo is certified to FSSC 22000 v 5.1 standards, with all processes contained within the business, from extrusion, coating, printing, laminating and slitting to final bag- and pouch-making. At the helm sit the children of co-founder Joseph Giglio; Lee-Anne Giglio is the company’s COO, while her brother Leonardo Giglio is the OPTIMIST & CEO. The Catena-E 48 thermal system can image plates in sizes up to 35 inches x 48 inches, reportedly enabling precise image reproduction and fine relief elements at faster speeds. And in terms of sustainability, not only do the LEDs use less energy than conventional lamps, more savings are achieved when exposing smaller plates as only the LEDs directly below the plate are active, according to the company. Further improving the results and the sustainabil- ity, Tempo is applying ThermoFlexX Woodpecker Sharp surface screening to their plates.

Sun Chemical Collaborates With Qualvis Packaging Sun Chemical and Qualvis Packaging, Leicester, United Kingdom, have collaborated to develop a highly sustainable chocolate truffle carton for choc- olate manufacturer Whitakers. The concept enabled Whitakers to transform an ex- isting truffle carton that featured 55 percent plastic into a highly recyclable lightweight fiber-based solu- tion without plastic layer of the same dimensions. The package uses Sun Chemical’s SunPak Direct- Food Plus bio-renewable direct-food contact inks and SunSpec SunStar direct-food contact aqueous varnish on the inside of the carton.

The use of Sun Chemical’s inks and varnish re- portedly eliminates the need for a plastic extrusion in between the ink film and the food product and enables replacement of the existing PET double clam shell housing the truffles with a fibre-based holding structure, while ensuring both a direct food contact safe environment for the truffles comple- mented by functional resistance and barrier proper- ties to maintain the protection and integrity of the carton structure and its contents. This, in combination with the highly bio-renew- able properties of the inks reportedly decreases the overall carbon footprint of the product. SunPak FSP EcoPace low-migration inks and Sun- Coat aqueous varnish are employed on the front of the carton, also contributing to the reduced carbon footprint achievement due to a very high bio-re- newable content made possible by employing a new fossil fuel-free carbon black derived process ink. All inks are also cradle-to-cradle certified. Furthermore, the board is an environmentally sourced material from premium paperboard com- pany and Qualvis partner Holeman Iggesund. The outer cellophane wrap has been replaced with a tear strip built into the carton design to keep the lid in place during transit and on the shelf at retailers.
