Clean water projects outlined The Eastern Ontario Water Resources Committee (EOWC) has three main projects it wants to work on this year within the region as part of its overall goal of improving municipal access to clean drinking water. The overall EOWC budget is $154,581 but that includes some money left over from the previous year’s budget on projects that will carry over to this year. For the Prescott-Russell region, the EOWC is looking at continuing with last year’s work on climate change adaptation programs and a project for treating effluent from local breweries. This year’s new EOWC project for the region is an infrastructure assessment for Prescott-Russell to aid municipalities in their own planning for water resource management. – Gregg Chamberlain Paving and repair contracts Two contracts for paving repair and roadwork upgrading in the City of Clarence-Rockland are on the table for approval at a future municipal council session. The committee of the whole has recommended approval of a $100,000 contract, not including HST, with P.B. Paving & Landscaping Ltd. for asphalt repair and patching work in the municipality this year. The committee has also recommended approval for a contract worth $208,076.71, not including HST, with Synex Construction Ltd. for road surface treatment work on Bouvier and Duquette Roads. – Gregg Chamberlain The downside of summer time fun is the increased risk of contracting Lyme disease from some varieties of ticks, while out for a walk in the woods or through an open field. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council voted support of resolutions from Niagara Region council and Augusta Township demanding the provincial government increase its funding support of research to improve testing for Lyme disease, help develop more effective treatment for the disease, and also more effective means to exterminate the species of tick responsible for spreading it. Lyme disease causes long-term joint pain and chronic fatigue among other symptoms and the number of diagnosed cases in Ontario is increasing. – Gregg Chamberlain Nats pre-season training camp The new junior hockey season hits the ice early autumn, but before that happens, the Rockland Nationals Club has a training and conditioning camp, available in August, for would-be applicants before the tryout ses- sion. The camp will run August 15, 17 and 18, at the Clarence-Rockland Arena, on the Canadian International Hockey Academy campus, in Rockland. The camp is open to participants ages 16 to 21. Details on registration fees are available at the club’s website at http://www.hometeamsonline. com/teams/?u=NATIONALS&s=hockey or just google Rockland Nationals junior hockey club.– Gregg Chamberlain More research money on Lyme disease

Young people who want to learn safe hunting skills can apply for an annual regional apprenticeship program. The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) and the Delta Waterfowl Foundation (DWF) are co-hosting their ninth annual YouthHunter Apprenticeship Program, again this fall. The aim of the program is to provide training for youth in safe hunting practices and also teach them about waterfowl habitat. The program involves three weekend

sessions in September. Participants attending take part in two training sessions followed with participation in a goose field hunt in October. The safe hunting training program is for youth, ages 12 to 15, and there are 10 openings available for this year’s session. The hunt itself is called the Dan Dufour Memorial Hunt and is named in honour of the co-founder of the SNC chapter of the DWF and its fundraising banquet. Successful participants of the program will earn their apprentice hunting and

firearm’s licences. Interested applicants should submit a letter explaining their interest in conservation and why they would like to take part in the training program. Copies of the letter can be scanned and emailed to ƉĚƵŶĐĂŶΛŶĂƟŽŶ͘ŽŶ͘ĐĂ or mailed to Philip Duncan, South Nation Conservation, 38 Victoria Street, Finch ON K0C 1K0.
