W hile preparing the “Take a Kid to a Garage” article by Patrick Knight in this month’s Street Sweeper, I was moved by the question posed: How do I get into this game? It reminded me of something my mother told me as an early teen when she tried to con- vince me people were born with certain genes leading to talent and skills that make them better at certain things than others. I’ve always believed people can accomplish anything they want to if they are driven by interest and desire. One only must look at mankind’s interest and desire to explore and grow throughout the years to realize what’s been accomplished. While pondering the past, turning your dream of building a kick-ass mode of transportation doesn’t seem so unsur- mountable. Growing up on a farm, working, using tools, having unlimited space to store stuff, and even driv- ing, all came at a very early age. Rodding maga- zines delivered to our rural Montana farm or pur- chased at the local newsstand fueled my interest and desire to get into the hot rod game at around eight years old, hence my eventual move to SoCal where the game was being played. I’d never given much thought to the majority who grow up with- out the opportunities rural life brings, especially learning the first real step to getting the job done is action. Sure, all the thinking and planning leading up to action counts, but it really starts with putting tool-to-part to begin some form of disassembly, assembly, or repair. I’ve had a dedicated home shop (daily drivers and lawn equipment not allowed) for well over 50 years, some years to make a living, but mostly as a hobby shop. It seems the older I get the more organized and cleaner my surroundings are the bet- ter I feel, so several years ago I started a journey to “cleanup around the place.” It started on the out- side with things that would never have been thrown away on the farm, but living on the edges of a metropolis like LA, space is a real constraint. Next was an awning and steel shelves behind the shop, doubling the 700 sq-ft interior space. It covers the air compressor, metal storage rack, sandblaster, galvanized parts cleaning sink and storage for hot rod parts that may be used in the future or sold. After all these years you can imagine the toolbox drawers were overflowing, cabinets were stuffed, and all floor space under anything was being used Passion & Desire

for storage. This stage of the cleanup was focused on the question: What do I really use versus what is something I may use in the future (specialty tools)? The transformation makes working in the garage much more efficient and pleasurable. With every- thing off the floor cleaning is a breeze with an air blower, toolbox drawers can now be opened and closed without shuffling the contents and missing tools can be spotted immediately. Whether power or hand tools, the might-need-someday ones are stored to be out of sight, out of mind. The photo shows my 30-foot lineup of tools that basically allows anything to be repaired or even fab- ricated. Starting at the far right is an oxy/acetylene welder, extension cords and air hoses, tig welder, and a thick metal bench and drill press. The machinist toolbox and small bins hold drill bits and end mills for the lathe and mill. The belt sander, bandsaw, combination wire wheel/grinder/polish- ing wheel and a hydraulic press allows a fabricator or builder to apply action to most jobs at hand. Out of sight is another workbench with a large vise. In this world of 3-D printing and carbon fiber exotics pushing our limits and pocketbooks, if you learn about the mechanicals and esthetics of hot rodding and equip yourself with most of these basic tools there is a good chance you can “Get In This Game” in a truly life changing way, not because you have special genes, but instead took action on your interest and desire.

Long Live Print! Staff,

Tom, I’m a senior citizen and older member of NSRA since 1986. In all those years I’ve been on the giving and receiving side of the Fellow Pages. I understand the elimination of the former pocket guides were a cost cutting necessity. However many of us are not tied to computers or newer communication technologies and we’ve even been dependent on flip phones which makes it more difficult to access them online. My sug- gestion is to publish the Fellow Pages in an issue of StreetScene where we can remove the pages and carry them with us as we did in the past. Thank you for your contributions to the hot rodding community. Tom Vasina Via e-mail

In the recent January issue of StreetScene, I detect- ed a hint underlying Tom Vogele’s article on the use of the internet versus printed material, suggesting that in the future there might not be a printed magazine. Please do not drop the printed material. I think it’s wonderful that you can add the magazine to our website for newer members. Unfortunately, I for one, do not access anything online because I do not have that little mobile device with all the information avail- able at my fingertips. I look forward to receiving my printed magazine every month, one of the few print- ed rod magazines still available. I have been an NSRA member since 1978 and have renewed my member- ship every year to continue receiving StreetScene mag- azine every month, even though it would have been to my advantage to have bought the “Lifetime Membership” at that time for a mere $50. I try to encourage new members by including a Membership Application form in the goodie bags at our “Father’s Day Fun Run” in Warrens, Wisconsin. I’m the last founding member of the host Wizards of Rods car club and have seen a lot of members come and go over the years. Tom Vinopal Warrens, Wisconsin Hi Tom, I have a comment referencing January’s Curbside article. One of my remaining true pleasures in life is to sit in my garage and enjoy StreetScene while sip- ping a cold one. I understand demographics (I’m in the top side) and costs, but I also understand and value traditions. Sittin’ in my garage reading StreetScene on a laptop just ain’t right. All the best.

Hey Tom, A few minutes ago I was sitting on the throne reading your January Curbside and appreciated your support and comments about our “hot rod rags,” and print in general. It’s all right to work to attract new customers/enthusiasts but not on the backs of those who built this hobby. Keep up the great work. Jim Mothershead Via e-mail To All Who Responded, Before responding I re-read my January Curbside, “Talking to the World,” and I realized my excitement of being exposed to many new potential enthusiasts came through much stronger than my passion and stalwart belief there will always be demand for print magazines. Rest assured, like us, when you sit down to enjoy your passion or an interesting read the only thing you need is a handful of printed material. StreetScene magazine is a great benefit for members and will always be there for our members. Those providing the same material for both print and electronic are the businesses that want to grow, but also understand the true value of the print magazines we grew up with.—ED

Charlie Lowrey Ruskin, Florida

Tom, Just finished reading your recent Curbside. My hus- band and I joined NSRA in 1978 and are Lifetime Members. I sure hope you don’t give up the print copy because we live in the country and do not have inter- net. It’s so expensive out here and neither my husband nor I are computer savvy. We both read the magazine cover to cover and would for sure miss it. I miss the “Fellow Pages” already. Don’t do this to us too. Karen and Brian Derge Via email

Take A Kid To A Garage

By Patrick Knight

W e’ve all seen “Take a Kid to a Car Show” arti- cles and ads so I thought I would give it a try with Alan Valentine, a 28-year-old kid. I invited him to the 2021 NSRA Nationals in our hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, and he spent three days with me in my tent with 50 of my buds, all 50-to-70 years old, looking at all their cars and listening to stories of past Nationals and their other cars at home. He was amazed that most of these cars were built, not bought. After the show was over, I invited him to visit my home garage to show him how we built these cars. After a couple of hours of cars, parts, welders, hand tools, a sheetmetal brake and shear, glass bead cabinet, lifts and a room set up for paint- ing, he looked me straight in the eye and said, “How do I get into this game?” I told him there were schools that taught auto mechanics but cautioned him they involved thousands of dol- lars and a year or more of time to learn only the basics. That level of education is not available for everyone, so I offered him anoth- er option.

garage was used to disassemble and inspect an engine I got in a trade deal. He had never seen the internal parts of an engine and was wide eyed and bushy tailed the whole day. Sensing his enthusiasm I made him an offer, “Just pick one of the engines from my pile and it’s yours.” I guided him toward the one needing the least amount of machine work and parts. The plan was he and I would assem- ble it and paint it with a real paint gun and then he had a fresh 350ci ‘82 Corvette engine to put in a car he did not have! At his tender age, with all the expenses of a young family man, a high-dollar car was out of the question, so we all went on the hunt and found a ‘78 Camaro Z28 that had been in storage for 30 years. It was found locally and needed minimal investment to be on the road. Now he could become a participant, not an observer, in a car with an engine he had hand assembled. Yes, it needed brake and fuel system maintenance and a few minor upgrades, but it’s a solid car that did not need a complete paint job or interior. After a short three-year

internship with influence from a bunch of old- school street rodders, he is now ready to be “in the game.” Look for Alan at the 2026 NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville and let him tell you about building his own ‘78 Z28 Camaro, with a little help from some newfound friends.

None of my friends he met at the Nationals went to school to build cars, we all went to the next-door guy’s garage at night and watched, lis- tened and learned. All those guys had day jobs and only a few were in the automotive field, but more than anything they wanted to build cars, or sometimes just do their own brake job. Nevertheless, these garages were full of knowl- edge that one could learn from, so I put together a plan for Alan to learn how to build his own car. His day job was five days a week with a day off during the week. I set him up with three different garages to visit one day a week and assist and learn from our experiences. One such day in my

NSRA Autocross 2026 Let’s Make It Handle

By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director autocross@nsra-usa.com

C ontinuing our series of articles discussing steps to your enjoying the NSRA Autocross experi- ence, this month we’ll discuss suspension and handling. By now you may have noticed a definite difference in the handling of different vehicles out on the track. For those attacking the course fast and smooth, a lot of time, effort and usually money has been invested to get to that level. The other thing common amongst the fast vehicles is their ride height. As you have likely seen on real race cars, ride height is usually very low. By lowering the vehicle’s “center of gravity” the car can maneuver turns at higher-than-normal speeds. If you’ve ever taken an exit ramp too fast in a taller vehicle, like an SUV, you can see how a lower center of gravity is important. When you watch various vehicles run the course you also notice a thing called “sway,” or lack of it. The sway bar is designed to reduce vehicle lean as it goes around a corner. So, all I have to do is put big- ger sway bars on my vehicle and it will handle bet- ter? No, too big a bar can make handling worse and reduce suspension travel. Like every component you put on your vehicle, a balance of ride quality and operation must be kept. Many vehicles only have one sway bar in the front, so adding that second sway bar in the rear will greatly improve your han- dling capabilities. Springs, shocks and coilovers, which is the best fit for my vehicle? Think about how much better han- dling you really want, because if it handles like a race car, it probably rides like one too if not properly setup. In many cases just upgrading the original shocks and springs can make a huge difference and not compromise the ride quality. When you are con- sidering a suspension upgrade, or building your first autocross ride, be very aware of weight balance. Race car builders are very aware of what weight does to the handling of their vehicles. Have your car weighed in its stock configuration, or if you are in the build stage look at Ridetech’s website. Their tech pages include hundreds of vehicles they have run across their scales at different events. Coilovers are a spring and shock absorber in one unit to allow maximum adjustment possibilities. The shocks include compression and rebound adjust- ments, and the springs are designed to support the vehicle weight correctly. Having a vehicle weighed on all four corners can be useful to correct a vehicle

that rides too harsh. Tubular control arms are designed to replace worn OEM components and offer significantly increased strength, reduced weight (up to 15 lbs per side), improved geometry for better handling and caster angles, and increased clearance for lowered vehicles or aftermarket tire and brake upgrades. So, do I have to change everything in the suspen- sion just to enjoy autocross? Nope, but improving the handling of your vehicle goes right back to the safety part NSRA emphasizes in their autocross pro- gram. If it handles better on the track, it’s safer on the highway. See you at the track!

Isky — Ed Iskenderian and the History of Hot Rodding

By Matt Stone

D elve into the life of Ed Iskenderian, a gifted machinist with a natural knack for promotion, who started a cam business from the ground up and became a leading cam authority and hot rodding icon. Now back in print in paperback, “Isky: Ed Iskenderian and the History of Hot Rodding,”

with tens of thou- sands of vets who had the desire to make cars go fast. Ed was an early pioneer in the indus- try for print adverting and catalogs. He pur- chased an ad in the second issue of Hot Rod magazine. Sensing something big, his instincts, as always,

were right. He was also the first to use T-shirts and uniforms as pro- motion. Ed was also among the first to understand the value of having successful race cars using his cams in their engines and wearing his decals on their fend- ers. The biggest names in the rac- ing industry were running Isky cams, and Ed made sure the world knew it. Ed’s company name went on to become one of the household names in the per- formance community. His contin- ued success is an entertaining tale of mingling with industry icons, insight into the business of hot rodding, great stories of yesterday and today, and a life very well lived. You will enjoy the stories recorded here as much as Ed “Isky” Iskenderian seems to enjoy telling them. The 7 x 10-inch, 208- page softbound book features 153 color and 100 B&W photos. tells the whole story, including his pre-war Lake Muroc and car club activities, his military service, how he started a small business fabri- cating parts and making cams in the back of a rented shop, and how he then sold those cams to other rodders. It covers how he grew a business from a single cam grinder and became an authority in the field in barely 10 years. To tell the life story of Ed “Isky” Iskenderian is to tell the history of hot rodding in America. Ed was there from the very beginning. Born in 1921 to first-generation Armenian immigrants, Ed’s first hobby was ham radio, but like many young men in the years before World War II, his interest turned to automobiles, especially hot rods. Ed had natural skills in metal working and machining that were developed in high school. He wanted to further develop those skills, so he joined the Air Corps to continue his edu- cation and flew with Air Transport Command. By the time Ed was out of the service, the California hot rod scene was in full bloom

Valve Cover Racing Returns A fter a one-year hiatus, we’re happy to announce that Hotrod Hangout Speed Shop & Diner out of Galena, Kansas, are bringing their Valve Cover Track to the Mid-America Street Rod Nationals. They have been doing Valve Cover Racing for about 15 years traveling all over to car shows and events. Their track is 32 feet long and for those not familiar, gravity is the only thing that makes them go. They offer loaners for anyone that has not built their own racers yet on a first-come first-serve basis. They also have a Valve Cover Racer building station with all the parts for sale needed to construct your very own racer. Finally, they also do bring along a few old valve covers for sale that would need painted. There will also be plaques for all the winners. So here is your chance to dust off that old Valve Cover Racer, we all know there are a bunch of these setting on rodder’s shelves all across the Midwest! Or if your new to this sport, grab one of those old valve covers off your spare parts shelf, bring it with you and you can build your very own during the event. For more information, contact Brian Haden at 785-577-9752 or the Event Director for build rules. Pinup Girl Contest We’re also happy to announce that Bethany Coppedge, aka Iona Bel Air, will be hosting the Miss Mid-America 2026 Pinup Contest once again at the Mid-America Nationals. Bethany is no stranger to running this type of event. She has been hosting Pinup Contests for many years, including the one that takes place at this very same facility in November. The contest will be held on Saturday, May 23, at 2pm. Please reach out to Bethany at 405-206-0583 or bethanycoppedge@gmail.com if you’re interested in participating. Host Club The Pharoahs Car Club of Springfield, Missouri, are returning as the official Host Club of the Mid-America Nationals. Not only will they be handling the Kids Games and Coloring Contest this year, but will once again be in charge of the 2026 Swap Meet. Just like last year, their por- tion of the Swap Meet money earned will all be donated to charity! So, if you see any of the Pharoahs sporting white Host Club ribbons, give them a great big thank you for everything they do the entire weekend.

This year everything that was located in Memorial Hall will now be in the UPMC Arena building, starting with Women’s World, Builders’ Showcase, Pinstripers Charity Auction, Pinup Girls, the Pedal Car & Model Car displays. If interested contact Kevin Webb at autocross@nsra-usa.com. The Ladies Tea will still be in the Old Main building and on Friday afternoon. Later Friday night in Old Main from 5-7pm the Explore York convention bureau will feed the first 400 participants. Registration Registration for the Nationals East will be located at the Wyndham Garden Hotel located at 2000 Loucks Rd., York, Pennsylvania. Registration will open on both Thursday and Friday at 9am and stay open until 6pm. On Saturday 9am and close at 12 noon. This property sells out the day after the event because every- one wants to stay here and they reserve their room before they check out. This Host Hotel turns into a parking lot car show on Thursday and way into the night. Everyone loves visiting with all their friends and all the cars that show up to register. The mood is set for the day by having a DJ playing music all day long for your enjoyment. If you want to stay at the Host Hotel contact them right away and if they are sold out, get on a waiting list and keep calling them! Garage Tour A huge attraction that kicks off the Nationals East is the Garage Tour leaving the Host Hotel at 9am on Wednesday morning. Feature design by Paul Sloup Article & photography by Louie Mayall

I t’s not often that we feature rods from French Canada, mostly the rods we have run are from people that speak English flawlessly. But as Canadians and most Northerners know, there are a ton of French Canadians that speak almost no English, just French. I thought that it must be hard to learn the story of a rod if you can’t bench race with the guy! I really loved Stephane Dumaine’s ’39 Ford pickup out of Roxton Pond, QC, Canada, but upon returning to the hauler, I kept run- ning into his brother who only spoke a little English. On one of my return trips, the brother was explaining

everything in French, and I just sat back and watched. I learned about the custom teak bed box, knew to check out the seats, something was up with the tranny (manual), and much more. It was cool to pick all that up from just watching and thought it would be cool to see what it’s like to cross the lan- guage divide. Eventually I caught up with Stephane, but he already had plans, so I shot his ’39 with his brother later that day. Stephane has been a car nut since his youth and has been building his collection for over 40 years. Like us he loves his hauler, but he bought the ’39 so some of the details got lost between own- ers, but I’ll give you all I know. A ’39 Ford frame was

boxed, reshaped/narrowed to fit the channeled body, the rear was Z’d, and new crossmembers were fabricated and installed. The front suspension is a dropped I-beam bouncing on a transverse leaf behind the axle with cross-steering, shorty gas shocks, split shorty wishbones, and disc brakes behind steel covers. The rear suspension is a Ford 9- inch with disc brakes and held in place with a set of hairpins. Power comes from a ‘69 Ford 302 small- block wearing Edelbrock heads, an Air Gap mani- fold, a Holley 750 double-pumper, custom Lakester- style headers, and a five-speed manual. True hot rods are all about getting rid of the extra stuff and Stephane’s ’39 has had a few mods and its MARCH 2026 31

overall look is all about what has been moved or is now missing. The top has been chopped and the windshield leaned back slightly, the factory bed was shortened and drilled with lightning holes, the stock headlights are now hood-side mounted in the Ford oval, and missing are the running boards, fenders, inner fender panels and bumpers. The bed floor has been raised and floored with teak wood. The car is covered in gorgeous lime green with a touch of extra yellow. The interior is based around custom aluminum aircraft-style seats with tan leather padding and match- ing door panels. The headliner and dash are leather covered and the hump is aluminum. The interior is rounded out with Stewart Warner multi-gauges for an

F1, a tilt column, and a ’40 Ford steering wheel. The rod is finished off with 16-inch Artillery-style steelies wearing Firestone bias-ply rubber. Rodding is a universal language and I love it. I may not know anything about Peugeot diesel engines, but love what those crazy Cubans do to keep their old American iron running. Now, since already speaking fluent pre-war street rod, it turns out I can also translate the fun of street rodding. Experience also told me I love the French-Canadian street rods that tend to run toward traditional street rods. So, get out there and meet some new rodders and I’ll see you in a couple months enjoying your ride.
