Cars and Family

Scripture:
John: 13 34-35
G rowing up in my family you never had to wonder what we were going to do for vacation. Spring of every year we would head out on the weekends for car shows within a four-hour drive of our home. Once a year, my dad would take his vacation time to attend the Street Rod Nationals wherever they were located that particular year. Mom and dad were diehard street rodders, par- ticipating in all the first 25 Nationals. For me as a young kid, I just thought that was a part of life for everybody who enjoyed cars. Mom would pack sandwich- es for the trip and dad would wake us up to help load our ‘32 Chevy. We would meet up some- where in town with our car bud- dies and their families and travel together. It seems to have never failed that somebody along the way would break down and that’s when the car family would come together. I can’t remember a time someone left the group while cars were still being worked on. Upon arrival at the event everybody would eat out togeth- er, laugh and talk while us kids were sure to find out when the kids’ games were scheduled. Whether it was the washer stack, the creeper roll, the big wheel race or some other car-related game, we didn’t want to miss one. One of my best memories was the year in Birmingham, Alabama, when I won the Big Wheel race and the grand prize was getting to keep the Big Wheel. I rode that thing until
there was no plastic left on the front wheel. When God created the family, he created a genius of an idea. He could’ve had us born as full- grown adults, not needing the nurture and care of others. God created family to provide commu- nity and love on a daily basis for a minimum of 18 years and hope- fully for life. The love he gave us for a family comes out of the love of the heavenly father and the love of his son Jesus Christ. Don’t get me wrong I know that every family is not perfect and ours was no different, but I’m so grateful God created the family to build love into everyone’s life. I want to encourage you as much as possi- ble to make street roding a family sport growing your love for each other in the journey. John 13 34- 35 says: “a new command I give to you love one another even as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Let’s strive to show that kind of love toward each other.
