Dear Cattlemen, We would like to invite you to our 58th Annual Bull and Female Sale here at the farm. We want to thank every- one who has attended, supported, and shown interest in our program over the years. Your confidence in our seedstock means a great deal to us, and we hope you’ll take the time to look through what we have to offer this year and in the years to come. Our slogan has always been “A Sale Worth the Wait!”, and we feel you’ll agree after viewing this offering. We are enrolled in the Maternal Plus Program through the American Angus Association, a tool that has helped us make informed decisions early. While we may not have a large volume of cattle, we’re excited about the quality they bring to the table. These bulls and heifers represent the heart of our program—maternal strength, structural integrity, and real world performance that keeps a cow herd moving in the right direction. This year’s offering has not been creep fed, giving you a true look at how these cattle are bred, not fed. It’s a straightforward way to showcase the natural performance and genetic merit behind this set. As you look through the catalog, you’ll notice we’ve highlighted WDA on several of our bulls, underscoring the kind of real world growth and doing ability these cattle bring without the influence of creep feed. Our cattle are 99.9% born after January 1st—no fall bulls. We believe in our cows, and at this point have done very little ET work. These bulls were developed with longevity in mind, not pushed to see how big we could get them. We feed a Purina program recommended by our nutritionist, Jason Kuhlman. If you have any questions about their feeding program, please call Jason at (605) 481 0571. Again, this year, we are offering some of the top end heifers from our replacement pen. We don’t let go of fe- males lightly, so when we do, you can be confident they come from the kind of cow families we believe in. Take a look at the Dam’s Production, EPDs, and $Values on these heifers. If you have any questions about our seedstock, or if you’d simply like to visit about the cattle, please feel free to contact us. We enjoy talking with people and are always happy to help. We also encourage you to stop by the farm anytime during the year or before the sale to look through the cattle in person. We look forward to seeing everyone on sale day and wish you safe travels. Please join us for lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. before the sale. If you are unable to attend in person, you can view and bid on the bulls and heifers online through DVAuction after registering. Thank you for taking the time to view what we have to offer. God’s Blessings, Lau’s Valley View Farm Jeff and Brenda Lau Marcus and Allison Lau

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) , is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. PRODUCTION EPDs American Angus Association Selection Tools
Calving Ease Direct (CED) , is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) , expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) , expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
MATERNAL EPDs
Heifer Pregnancy (HP) , is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) , is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
MANAGEMENT EPDs
Docility (Doc) , is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.
Pulmonary arterial pressure EPD (PAP) , is expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score. PAP score is an indicator of susceptibility to high altitude disease commonly experienced at elevations greater than 5,500 feet. Selection for this trait aims to improve the genetic potential for a sire’s progeny to have lower PAP scores thus a lower chance of contracting high altitude disease increasing the environmental adaptability of cattle living in mountain areas.
CARCASS EPDs
Marbling EPD (Marb) , expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE) , expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
$VALUE INDEXES
$Value indexes, an economic selection index allows multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a specific breeding objective. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Weaned Calf Value ($W) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight. Feedlot Value ($F) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and dry-matter intake.
Grid Value ($G) , an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will market cattle on an above-industry-average carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows (in no particular order): carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat. Beef Value ($B) , a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat. Combined Value ($C) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) directly influencing a combined index: calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), heifer pregnancy (HP), docility (DOC), mature cow weight (MW), foot angle (Angle), claw set (Claw), dry matter intake (DMI), marbling (Marb), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE) and fat thickness (Fat).

• We only have one Craftsman bull in the sale, and he’s a knockout. He’s out of a first calf heifer and still comes recommended for heifers, showing the kind of calving ease and early quality that rise to the top fast. • The bottom side of his pedigree is stacked with five Pathfinders, all tracing back to our influential 725 cow—the grandam of last year’s high selling heifer now valued at $130,000. Most of his $Values land in the top 15% or better, so the numbers back up the pedigree. And don’t forget, 725 is also the grandam of LVVF Miss Saluda 5148, selling as Lot 43.

• A herd bull prospect with the mass, shape, and presence that gets attention every time you walk past him. We meant to name him LVVF Deep Side, and it would’ve fit—he’s a tank—but a typing error sent the name to another bull. He’s a sure shot heifer bull, extremely docile, and backed by strong IMF and RE, giving him a powerful, well balanced profile. His WDA at weaning of 3.61 with no creep shows the kind of natural performance that matters. His dam, LVVF Blackbird 850, is a Pathfinder who has raised multiple high sellers in past sales, adding proven maternal strength to the package.

• A sleep all night heifer bull with the kind of build and balance that makes him easy to like. Claw and angle are excellent, and he brings real carcass punch with an IMF ratio of 150, RE ratio of 101, and a 14.8 actual ribeye. • His dam is a good uddered, highly fertile female that stays on a 360 day interval, and the cow family has already proven itself—there’s a maternal brother, LVVF Justified 381, that went to work as a cleanup bull on our heifers. Lot 48 is one of his daughters in the sale, and she’s a really nice heifer.
• A nice bull with good claw and angle EPDs, backed by a data set that’s hard to ignore. He ranks Top 10% for SC, Top 20% for DMI, Top 10% for Teat, Top 4% for UDDR, Top 10% for $M, Top 15% for PAP, and Top 20% for Marb—a remarkably well rounded profile. • His dam is doing her job well, holding a 362 day calving interval and posting an IMF ratio of 114, with the kind of teat, udder, and foot quality that keeps cows in the herd a long time.
