King's Business - 1962-02

personal evangelism by Benjamin Weiss W H Y d id B a r b a r a look at you so wistfully when you were tell ing your Sunday School class about the conversion of Saul? Why did she stay around after class for several minutes leaving the impression with you that she wanted to talk to you about something? You were busy with a few details about your class, and when you looked around, she had gone. Jim asked several disturbing ques tions during the class session. Some thing seemed to be troubling him. The roots of the questions seemed to be deep down in his own life. You couldn’t be personal in your answers because you had a lesson to teach. Later, as you thought about the question, it disturbed you. W h a t was Jim searching for — information about some Bible truth? An unusual response in a teaching situation, a serious question, a search ing interest by pupils is the evidence that the seed, the Word, has fallen on good ground and is sprouting. The Spirit is speaking to these children and young people, and inviting them to make the great decision to receive Christ as Saviour, and begin a new life of spiritual adventure. Their re sponse depends, largely, on your alertness to recognize the opportunity and give help. But you say, “I can’t stop in the middle of a lesson and talk to one pupil.” Or, “I can’t hold them after class and continue talking to one, or more pupils. It might be embar rassing to a pupil, if I asked him to stay after class.” There are many op portunities for a teacher to have a personal talk with a pupil. At the close of the class session it would be easy to say, “Barbara, could I see you for a moment?” You might choose another occasion, and ask Barbara to stop by the house this evening for a snack, or for dinner some evening, during the following week. One Sun day School teacher took his pupils on trips and hikes to find the time and place to talk to them about God and His love for them. You are teaching the most im portant truth in the world. The very core of this truth is, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). You can by dedicated and consecrated ef fort bring your pupils to Christ. You are the spiritual shepherd of your pupils. You are the one who can best win them.
