were taught the Biblical works of John the Baptist, but now they have turned away “frum” him. Hence the symbolic name “John Frum.” Dr. Coulter said the cult’s appeal is based on a belief that a new saviour will arrive with big ships laden with free luxuries. This, he says, apparently stems directly from the big impact made on the islanders by World War II Liberty ships which disgorged tons of troop supplies on the beaches. Equally appealing to the natives, said Dr. Coulter, is the fact that the new sect allows such pagan practices as nude dances and orgies considered immoral by Western standards. Beware of The Lowly Cockroach Cockroaches may be high dangerous nuisances. They naturally harbor four strains of poliomyelitis virus, about forty species of pathogenic bacteria, the eggs of seven species of pathogenic worms, and act as intermediate hosts for twelve other species pathogenic for vertebrates. They also have been found to carry three species of Pro tozoa pathogenic to man and to species of fungi which sometimes are found associated with pathogenic conditions. This warning is stressed by Dr. Louis M. Roth and Edwin R. Willis, formerly of the pioneering re search division of the Army Quarter master Research Center in Natick, Mass., in a report recently published by the Smithsonian Institution. “In addition to the above organisms of medical importance,” they report, “we have compiled records of other organisms, non-pathogenic to verte brates, which are naturally associ ated in some way with cockroaches.” Surgeon Gives Monkeys Two Separate Brains Have you ever tried to do two things at once? It can’t be done if you are human, but scientists at the California Institute of Technology, have a room full of monkeys trained to perform two directly opposite tasks at the same time. Their right hands do not know what their left hands are doing because their brains have been cut in half by surgery. The monkeys actually have two brains instead of one. Normally linked by bands of nerve fibers, the two large lobes of the brain comprising the cerebrum, are divided in a three-hour operation. Afterward, each half operates inde pendently and either can tell the monkey what to do.

Minister Tells Congregation His "Stately Church" Has Lost its Soul The Rev. Leonard Helie of the Uni- versalist Church of New York Central Park West and Seventy-Sixth Street, New York, told his fifty parishioners recently, “The soul, as well as the people, has gone out of the church.” Mr. Helie pointed to the large num ber of worshippers and the religious fervor to be found in what he called “the store-front churches on Amster dam Avenue.” He noted that almost 4,000 of these small churches had sprung up around the country in the last decade. He added: “Despite the emotionalism in them and the skepti cism of rational, intellectual persons about such emotionalism, each of those groups is characterized by a great faith and positive sincerity.” In answer to his question, “Why do I present this picture in this old and stately church?” the Rev. Mr. Helie said, “Because this church is empty today and churches like it are. The soul has gone out of the church.” Lag in Clerical Students Is the post-war surge of religious feeling coming to an end? This ques tion is being asked frequently in re cent years. There are signs that it is. One is that the nation’s Protestant, Catholic and Jewish leaders find they are unable to attract enough young people to religious vocations. It is feared that the popular interest in re ligion may dissipate before it can be captured and transformed into mean ingful gains for the three major faiths. The Protestant denominations are hardest hit and most concerned. Enrollments in their seminaries across the country showed a drop in the last year of 5.3 per cent, or 1,125 students from the previous year. A new religious cult, part Chris tianity, part pagan mysticism, is spreading among the Melanesian na tives of the New Hebrides Islands in the South Pacific. Its existence was reported by Dr. John Coulter, a Uni versity of Cincinnati geographer, who did field work in the area recently. The cult, which centers on an expect ed saviour known as “John Frum,” was originated by several rebel Chris tian ministers on the island of Tanna. The natives, according to Dr. Coulter, New Sect Attracts Members in Pacific
