BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA LESSON: Look at what is on the inside of this nut! (Crack the nut with the hammer.) I find a small bottle which looks like a v. * sky bot tle, and some rags. This reminds us of the Bible verse, “Strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink Tt” (Isa. 24:9). Again we read, “For the drunk ard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags” (Prov. 23:21). - What do you suppose we shall find in this next nut? It looks like a little cigarette. Think of all the money that is being spent for tobacco, while peo ple are hungry for bread! The next nut has a little card with hearts on it, a show ticket, and a dancing dress. They suggest pleasure. Many are spending their money for pleasures which neither feed the soul nor .satisfy the heart. The Bible says: “She that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth” (1 Tim. 5:6). The fourth nut contains something very different. It Is the Bible, and on the inside of the Bible I find a. red cross which reminds us of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. Christ, His cross, and His Word satisfy the heart. Y od Are Invited to Open Your Thrift Account with

pride is found, there is present a spirit antagonistic to the Master’s. The ut ter absence of pride is one of the things that'made Jesus different from all members of the human race. Each child of Adam is proud by nature— too proud to stoop to a slave’s task —but this is what the Lord Jesus did and what He asks of His disciples. To be like Jesus means to manifest the humility that characterizes the citizens of heaven. The lesson which Christ thus taught His disciples was obvious, and they did not mistake it. But knowledge alone is dangerous if it does not lead to action. II. T he M ystery (13:18-20) The Lord taught His followers not only humility, but also supreme trust in His providences. He declared, “I know whom I have chosen” (v. 18), and that choice included Judas Is cariot. Through all the years since our Lord Was on earth, the question has been asked, “Why did Jesus choose Judas as an apostle?” According to human reason, there is no answer. Did He know of Judas’ perfidy? If so, why did He choose him? To hu man reasoning, there is always mys tery about our Lord; His ways are past finding out and His judgments are unsearchable. Christ knew the deflection of Judas -before it became apparent. Nothing was hid from Him. When one be lieves that Jesus Christ is God, one can accept His choices unquestion- ingly, no-matter how mysterious His actions may appear. For one will know, and will believe, that His knowl edge and His actions extend f r o m eternity to eternity, while our view of them can have to do with only a brief span of time. The walk of the Chris tian is by faith, not appearance, ?nd true faith will bow in the presence of divine mystery, wholly confident that “ all things” are working for the ful-
John 131x12 So after he had washed their,, feet, and had taken his garments, and .was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to yon? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well j for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet} ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given yon an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant Is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them, 18 I speak not of yon all: I know 'whom 1 have chosen x bnt that the Scrip- lure may be fulfilled, He that eateth oread with me hath lifted .up his heel against me. 10 Now 1 tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send re ceiveth me} and he ’ that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. John 14x1 Let not your heart be trou bled} ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many man sions} if it were not so, I would have told you I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myselt} that where I am, there ye may he also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. 5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest} and how can we knoyv the way? 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth,, and the lifex no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. LESSON TEXTx John 13x12-20} 14x1-6. GOLDEN TEXTx “Jesus saith unto him, 1 am the way, the truth, and the lifex ho man cometh unto^the Father, but by me” (John 14x6). DEVOTIONAL READING} 1 Pet. 5x1-11. Outline pnd Exposition I. T he E xample (13:12-17) O UR LORD washed His disciples’ had done to them. He reminded them that t h e y acknowledged H im as Teacher and Lord. If then their Teach er and Lord washed their feet, they should not think it debasing for them to wash one another’s feet. However menial the task, if the One who is the Teacher and Lord could stoop to it, who were they to hold back from the same thing? He told them He had given them an example. They were to be His fol lowers, and -there would be times when tasks would be required which they might think were beneath their dignity to perform. But His example should teach that pride has no place in a disciple’s mind or heart. Where
