work which thou gavest me to do.” This is not the work referred, to when He cried, “It is finished” on the cross (John 19:30). The completion of His public min istry and the training of His disciples had been accomplished, and there was now. nothing needed but to pray that the g l o r y of His pre-existence, the glory of His essential oneness with the Father, be restored. He had “ emptied himself” (Phil. 2:6, 7, R. V.) and now He would return to that glory which was His before the world was. II. T he P ersons for I ntercession (6-8, 18-20) The Father had given our Lord the persons who were now His. They were to be found, saved, instructed, and sanctified': The method of finding and saving them was by manifesting the Father’s name to them. The instruc tion and sanctification w o u l d come through the Word given them.

John 17:1 These words spake Jesus» and lifted up his eyes to heaven» and said» Father» the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And. this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gav est me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me, and they have kept thy word. 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. 8 . For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known sure ly that I came out from thee, and ihey have believed that thou didst send me. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have 1 also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes 1 sanctify my self, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. ¿0 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through tbeir word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent mei 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one; 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the work}. may know that thou hast sent me, and hast, loved them, as thou has« loved me. 24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but 1 have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. 26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare It; that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be In them, and f in them. . LESSON TEXT : John 17:1-8, 18-26. GOLDEN TEXT : “Holy Father, keep throngh thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are” (John 17:11). DEVOTIONAL READING: Heb. 7:23-28. Outline and Exposition L T he V alue of I ntercession (1-5) O UR LORD began and finished His ministry in prayer, ¡thus leaving an example for all of His people. There is pecu liar power as well as peculiar diffi culty connected with the prayer of in tercession. This ministry is s a d l y neglected. It is important to speak to men about God, more important to speak to God about men. The answer to Christ’s prayer, “ Glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee,” meant the cross for Him. But so intent was He on hav ing God’s will done that even the cross was welcomed, if only that “will”

would be fulfilled t h e r e b y . Only through the work of the cross could eternal life be made available to those who had been given Him. There was no other way. God had been manifested in all the life of Christ on earth, and it is to this manifestation that He referred when He said, “I have finished the BLACKBOARD LESSON
